Vikings time!
Sorry for the holdup. I finally built up the motivation to finish a 3-player version. This is a 4:53:23 improvement over the 2-player movie. In order to play this movie, you need to set both players to 3 buttons and change the first gamepad to teamplayer.
  • Emulator used: Gens 9f
  • As fast as possible
  • Uses no passwords
  • Manipulates luck
  • Abuses programming errors in the game
  • Takes damage to save time
  • One player controls three characters simultaneously
In this action/puzzle game you control three vikings (Erik, Baelog, and Olaf), who are lost in time and space, each with their own special abilities needed to solve the levels.
Most of the techniques used are from the 2-player version, but I was able to pick up some new minor techniques here and there.
The individual level improvements are:

One bad thing about doing a three player run is the switching. In order to do so, you need to press A+B+C and that can cause some undesired actions, so I had to choose carefully when to switch characters (ex. cannot switch characters while ballooned up or will deflate). This would be eliminated if each character had 6 buttons to use.
Since all three characters can move at once, Erik usually has to wait or screw around for the other two to catch up. Sometimes Erik intentionally gets hurt or bangs his head on an enemy so Baelog or Olaf won't be interrupted by it.
Glitches used (excuse the copyedit):
  • Falling key glitch - This glitch is pretty simple. Using a key on a keyhole while falling will prevent one of the characters from taking damage. I use this frequently.
  • Falling multicolor key glitch - This one is almost identical to the one above, only this uses a key on a different colored keyhole while falling to avoid damage. This also doesn't use up the keyhole. I was able to use this only once in WKYY.
  • Slide in to wall - This glitch involves an elevator. When on one, standing on the very edge and sliding into a wall, then moving over and back again quickly will get a character lodged into the wall. I only was able to use this once in BTRY. This glitch is similar to the Rockman 2 wall-omission glitch (only I can't zoom through walls, which would be awesome).
  • Slide through door/wall - In TRPD, there's a spot where pinchers are use to hold a block. When in the path of the pinchers, turning the direction opposite to the wall will get the character stuck in the wall, which happens to be on top of a door. Then, switching will cause the character stuck in the wall to fall to the ground and jumping will then cause him to get zoomed down reaching a button to skip a major part of the level.
  • Fall through horizontal door - This is only usable in one place - TRDR. This is, when falling, using a key on the door in the floor and falling through it. Giving it to another character enables that character to do the same.
  • Avoid damage by switching characters - This is when you're moving (falling or jumping), switch and switch back quickly and end up taking no damage. This used on enemy projectiles and vertical lasers.
  • This is more of a trick than a glitch, but you can sometimes walk over holes if able to find the right frame.
I chose the Genesis instead of the SNES version of the game because:
  • There are 4 more levels in the Genesis version
  • There are very long pauses between the levels that would add at least two minutes to the total time
  • I'm more familiar with the Genesis version
Some personal level favorites: JMNN, H0PP, TRDR
Suggested screenshots: 3:58:15, 16:50:39, 21:25:16
Enjoy!

Truncated: Accepted for being a good improvement to an existing run.
We will also need a new category for this run: One player controls three characters.
Phil: While we're at it, One player controls 4 characters. should be added as well, since soon or later, it will happen.

While the 2-player version was clever in a resourceful way, this version is clever in a completely different way. That makes for an interesting watch. Well done.

This can only end in l33t. I will now get to the watching of it. *Later that day* Those last levels were dizzying to watch, what with all the character switching. But this run is awesome. Now how about the second game? :D This game needs the Four Swords treatment...

I can't seem to get it working right :( it desyncs right at the start after the blue viking jumps for the ladder... I am using Gens 9f, and these are the settings for my pads Player 1 Teamplayer; player 2 Pad all the controllers are 3-button one Are there any additional settings? The 2 player version worked fine, but this can't seem to work properly... all the vikings practically stand still and do not respond to anything. EDIT: Bah, it doesn't work still, even on 9j. Oddly, 9J does not auto configure the pads as you said, ninsuja... basically 9j emulates, and therefore desyncs just as 9f-9h. Think its just the problem of my comp, don't quite know why though. Guess I'll have to pass on this movie :( RE-EDIT: I realised that 9j does reconfigure the pads, but wrongly. It sets both players to PAD, not TEAMPLAYER, resulting in the blue viking suiciding from the start. But even if I tried setting the config to TEAMPLAYER on player 1 as soon as the movie starts, it desyncs

If you play it back in Gens 9j it automatically sets up the controls for you.

Thanks for your config file Ouzo, but it didnt help. Its probably the emulation being buggy on my hardware or OS... afterall I'm running a win98 lol.

If you play it back in Gens 9j it automatically sets up the controls for you. I did that and it desynched almost immediately (even though it played back correctly on 9f).

Finally! Lost Vikings played with three hands. Funniest TAS on the site. Voting YES for the dancing Olaf alone.

desynchs with any version, but works with ouzo's cfg (on 9f). curiously, it sets the controllers to "unknown". 9j's "auto sets controller" feature does not seem to be able to know/set this atypic configuration. on the movie : nicely played but I'm not especially thrilled by the game. a bit repetitive. not voting.

This is the first time i watch a lost vikings TAS, and it was fun! The time i shouted the biggest WOW was when erik handed an item to olaf on the first toyland level.. that was unexpected.

If 9j says the controllers are unknown, it means that somehow the movie file doesn't have the controller information saved. When I unzipped it, and opened it, 9j set the controls to port 1, teamplayer, 1: 3-button, 1A: 3-button, 1:B 3-button But it still desynced in the first level. When I opened the movie and loaded ouzo's cfg during the opening sequence, it played through, but desynced just at the end, instead of throwing the final switch, it pauses.

I used gens 9f, set the controllers like ouzo suggested, and it played perfectly.

I really enjoyed the first two versions, so I'm sure I'll like this even more, but I will wait for the avi to watch it due to difficulties getting it to play. Anyways nice job, big improvement over an already amazing run.
g,o,p,i=1e4,a[10001];main(x){for(;p?g=g/x*p+a[p]*i+2*!o: 53^(printf("%.4d",o+g/i),p=i,o=g%i);a[p--]=g%x)x=p*2-1;}

Okay, to get the movie to play in 9J turns out to be fairly simple Pause gens. (hit escape) Play the movie. Go to options->joypads Click "OK". Unpause gens. Now it will work properly. To clarify, the controller settings are getting loaded from the movie, but appearantly won't be used until you click ok on the controller dialog. This has been fixed for the next release

Yes, very good run. Before this I thought the 2-player run was near perfect but this is simply amazing. Of course watching it from 37" screen makes the viewing more pleasurable (damn, I need to visit home more often ;D). I'm absolutely sure that one of the judges will accept this movie, so as soon I get back to Turku, I'll start encoding it into AVI. EDIT: Would it be possible to control three players in SNES?
Which run should I encode next? :)

Not sure. I know snes9x has support for 5 players, but I've never tried to see if their input would be included in the movie file. Nitsuja, can you answer this?
