This simply won't work to 100% :-) No matter when you start to press the dash button your acceleration will always start from 0 so the earlier you press it the better. The slow...slow...slow tapping won't change anything here cause it's only Samus' animation which is only useful for the Speed Booster Checks that get you a Blue Suit / Charge. Doing this on short platforms will only decrease your acceleration room on it meaning you waste time and gain less momentum when jumping off compared to start dashing immediately there.

To those who are interested (though there hardly are any of those…), here's a short demo that clears the old Tourian escape shaft ~six frames faster than JXQ/OgreSlayeR: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1803/old_tourian_shaft_done_quick.smv ("~six" because the resulting horizontal positions in the next room don't match, so it's more like 5.5 frames.) As you see, the difference can easily be spotted because Samus noticeably yanks down each time she falls close to a ledge. This is good because it's not only faster, it also looks faster (…and cooler). :) In a run as long as JXQ's, I would estimate it to save 1—2.5 seconds, probably a bit more.

Finally I was able to watch the video, phew. (My parents got themselves AOL for their ISDN line. Thanks mom. -_- This means that I can't download the video from rapidshare. Oh well...) And it was worth the wait. =^_^= Btw. why did Samus have to fall into the lava at ca. 3:31?

lava = acid before ridleys room? i think he has to wait anyway for the door .. and iam sure the extra damage shortens the waitingtime for the crystalflash :)

Right, makes sense... It seems to need 50 or less energy units - I'll look for that. Hmm, acid? o_0

General nomenclature is that the bubbly stuff that you can transverse as normal with the gravity suit is called lava, and that the jaggedy line stuff that you typically find in lower norfair is called acid...

Holy crap, I can't believe I forgot to follow this thread! I got caught up in FODA's 120 star run and haven't checked your progress for months. I just watched the 3rd teaser, and it's utterly awesome. I just have to say that a lot of people sit around and come up with crazy things that you could theoretically do; things that would be harder than even a 100% run. I can imagine someone getting off to a great start and never finishing. I can imagine someone doing it well enough to be impressive, but not perfect. To see this run created with a level of perfection normally reserved for traditional any% or 100% runs absolutely floors me. The amount of planning it must have taken to figure out when it was possible to fight Ridley must have been extreme: clearly this goes beyond "how many missiles do I need?" You've set out to do something that no one else would try, then attempted to do it as well or better than any run that has ever been recorded before. I don't know if you're crazy or a genius. Either way, keep doing what you're doing.

yeah, the planning for this game is, absolutelly, the hardest part of TASing it. I mean, there are hundreds of items, hundreds of rooms, items, etc.

It's been over a month since the last teaser now. Are you making any progress, Saturn?

Not really. :-( I got up till the big room that has a Missile and a Super Missile near Botwoon but then noticed some improvements in the 1-walljumping strategy and Mt. Doom that could easily save more frames. Though because I have to redo all the previous underwater rooms again I got somewhat tired/bored of RBO for a while and during the break I continue to record a new any% run. However it's just something for change in TASing (which I need sometimes to get enough motivation for old project again) so I will probably continue RBO pretty soon again. :-)

Interesting that I'm anticipating two runs of the same game by the same author. How goes the any%?

Just defeated Torizo. I managed to save 68 frames compared to JXQs 100% run through the fight by manipulating him to throw the refills immediately at the beginning and managing to get all 5 Missiles back during the fight without any delay which saved some more frames on the exit. In total I could save around 140 frames after the fight.

Sweet! By the way, I hope you keep your stuff backed up. Hard drives have a tendency to die when they're loaded with multi-month projects...

Thanks for the hint Fredrik. I should indeed backup all the files on a disk or a floppy once in a while. :-)

140 frames over JXQ already? Good job, Saturn! This run is going to be really mad.

Does fighting that thing mean the run is near completion?

Torizo? It's the place where you get the morphball bombs.

no. First of all, he wasn't talking about the RBO but about his new any% run. Second, the bomb torizo is fought first even in an RBO. You can't bypass it (on NTSC), and it's just a miniboss and not subject to the reverse order.
