It's easier as in, you're less likely to critically fail and end up falling. The difficulty is essentially the same as far as avoiding motion upwards goes. And you need to cross *long* horizontal distances without significant upwards motion.

That's a script action; no damage. ... it just dawned on me I know way too much about SM.
It took THAT to make you realize?

What parts of the run would require that, exactly? Is it getting the X-ray scope, or something else, or more?

Okay, I looked at Kejardon's explanation. It makes sense that you can't get into Lower Norfair without the Gravity Suit, which is what I was confused about. I agree that horziontal bombjumping across all those spikes would be pretty much impossible.

By the way, I can't play my japanese Super Metroid version until I get the Super Famicom I ordered. I'll tell you when I receive it, and so when I'll be able to try many things in this incredible game ^o^

I'm uploading my Super Metroid TAS on Youtube in parts just like Kriole. I'll post the links here in case someone happens to be interested. The parts have many many mistakes but I don't think they're that awful. I tried to take advantage of the speed walljump in this part, don't know if it slowed down or made it faster. http://youtube.com/watch?v=p3payMOGlDo

Well, that isn't that bad. At least you're trying new stuff, and that is good. Trying new stuff is the key to making a good TAS. Play with frame advance and memory watch some more, and you'll get a hang of it. Basic optimization will become trivial with more experience.

Well, reaching moozooh-quality isn't really that trivial, you know. It's more a matter of patience. Only with alot of it you can get new experience and improve significantly. And of course it costs much time. Also, I checked your vids, Tonski. It's not moozooh-optimized, but it looks very entertaining and cool nevertheless. Good luck with your further progress, and lets see what final time you will be able to get. :-) EDIT: Just watched evilchens run. It definitely looks much better than your previous movies. Keep up practicing and you will get better for sure.

It's also worth mentioning that having Ceres at the beginning is a cruel introduction to TASing this game. Both of your guys' TAS show promise. Everyone starts out inexperienced :)

Rather, more motivation than anything else. :P Well, that, and also desire for more knowledge. FYI, my sloppy test run™ currently is 9 frames faster than the published any%, and that's considering I've ended Ceres 18 frames slower than Hero's run (didn't feel like optimizing/manipulating it at all) and lost ~2 frames in a certain part of the first cavern in Crateria. I want to nail all the timesavers you have found, and I believe I can do it myself.

Tonski: Looking pretty sharp so far. You are going with the phantoon, kraid, draygon, ridley route? Why not do kraid after draygon? Keep up the good work. evilchen: Watching your run in real time, it looks really good. In frame advance, I notice many things can be improved. You are missing most of the corner/low boosts. You press down, but you are doing it at the wrong time. My advice to you would be to compare frame counts with JXQ's movie. Do not advance to the next room until you at least tie him in frames. Trust me, this is the best way to learn the game. When I first made my run, I just tried to tie his times for each room. In doing so, I learned the ins and outs of the game very quickly. JXQ's newest run is incredibly optimized, so if you manage to tie his frame counts, you are doing damn good.

I'm pretty sure that the only region lockout Nintendo used was that the PAL carts physically don't fit in an NTSC console.

Not a promising attitude, to be honest... Without the way hero suggested it you won't be able to learn HQ TASing. Btw. Exactly same case how I learned TASing that game. In first attempt I only tried to tie flatleys counts, but I didn't continue, instead I tried to improve the room at the very first run already, after managing the tie. Continued this steps room, for room, for room... Thats a no less run than the RBO, and even if it's hard to believe, it's my first Super Metroid TAS attempt I have ever done. :-) I never allow me to waste time on a test run (even in the very first attempt) if I know I can optimize it from the very beginning with enough patience.

Here's my first crappy attempt of a super metroid tas, actually it's metroid limit http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4895/Metroid%20Limit.smv

That's… not half bad, actually. You missed a lot less optimizations than one would expect a first-timer (SM TASing first-timer, that is) to miss. Still there was quite a number of smaller scale mistakes, and Torizo fight was outright slow (you shouldn't EVER use power beam when it's possible to manipulate it to throw out the balls). Anyway, that was quite entertaining and I want to see more of it!

yeah you are right saturn but there are many things preventing me from putting more patients into (at the moment i guess) the time will come when i give it a try still thanks for the feedbacks guys ;) (is there a way to turn off frame adv once you have started it? i hate to restart the emulator to watch it in realtime)

Actually, I'm French and have an european (so PAL) Snes. I can't play Super Metroid jap even with my universal adaptor because the game has a "second protection" which prevents the game to be played in 60htz on a PAL console. After the Nintendo logo, a message appears (with a real mistake in it) : "Your game pak is not desigined for your SUPER FAMICOM or SUPER NINTENDO. Nintendo". Only a few games have such a protection against universal adaptors. Since I don't want to make changes on my console to play my Super Metroid (even if there is not real compatibility problems once it's done), I decided it would be better to order a Super Famicom (not very expensive =)) to ressolve all my problems. With 2 Snes and a universal adaptator, I don't think I wall have any problems to play my games, even if they are japanese or american versions :) (and sorry again for the mistakes, my english is far from being perfect ^^')

But wait, how are you going to play the NTSC version if you're still living in the region with 50 Hz electric outlets and PAL TV sets? Wouldn't there be, like, some problems?

I don't think so... Most TVs support 60htz format, and there is not any problem on recent games which can be played on 60htz. The electri outlets shouldn't be a problem too ^^

I think the problem isn't with with TVs as much as the fact that the electric current flows through them only 50 times per second, screwing up the timing. I don't know the exact specifics, but I believe you won't be able to play NTSC games on a 50 Hz power outlet without encountering such timing problems.
