I think this would be a good game to TAS, and I might attempt a story mode run on hard difficulty next semester. There are some major questions to consider: 1) what determines the starting location of the stars on the map and the order in which they appear? 2) use all minigames or only the easy ones? 3) which minigames would be fastest to complete? 4) Is it faster to buy stars or steal them using Boo/chance time? 5) which partner would be most useful during the duels? 6) Is it beneficial to move 10 steps every turn? 7) can you manipulate the items Toad/baby Bowser give you after you answer their question? 8) Would buying the magic lamp, getting 20 coins and then using the lamp be any faster than just getting 20 coins and reaching the star? 9) Where are the locations of the spots where, if you land on them, they give you an item, and can you manipulate them to give you a star every time? 10) Does the emulation encounter frequent desynchs? Any comments or opinions?

That would get boring if they were repeated or simple. 3) which minigames would be fastest to complete? Don't know. 4) Is it faster to buy stars or steal them using Boo/chance time? I don't think the regular game is possible to do speedwise since it's a set turn limit, just the mini-games would be good. 5) which partner would be most useful during the duels? Don't know. 6) Is it beneficial to move 10 steps every turn? Depends where you are. 7) can you manipulate the items Toad/baby Bowser give you after you answer their question? Of course. 8) Would buying the magic lamp, getting 20 coins and then using the lamp be any faster than just getting 20 coins and reaching the star? Depends on the situation. 9) Where are the locations of the spots where, if you land on them, they give you an item, and can you manipulate them to give you a star every time? Does it matter? 10) Does the emulation encounter frequent desynchs? Desyncs aren't predictable.

even if the story mode is turn based, the minigames are where the speed comes in. I'll have to admit that it can get very boring if I play the same set of games over and over just to get a faster time (I don't believe it lets you play the same minigame twice) BTW, are minigame runs even acceptable? Wouldn't that mean I would have to provide a savestate for each one?

The story mode maps are nothing but walking around, which by the end of all the levels would get really tedious. If you could make that interesting enough then do it. The minigames can be all done in one go i guess.

The only way a Mario Party run would be marginally entertaining would be if you did Mini game Roller coaster, or whatever it's called. A story run would probably only last 3 turns, in which most of the time nothing happens.

the problem is that the minigames only constitute part of the game, so they can't be accepted.

Mini game roller coaster is as much of a mode in Mario Party as story mode is. By your logic you can't even do a run of story mode.

I'm talking about mario party 3, not mario party 1 here. EDIT: and I meant minigame runs by themselves aren't allowed

Ah right, the coaster was in 2 wasn't it. Well then I advise to just do a run of 2 ;p

I've never played 3. Does it have anything like Mini-Game Coaster or Mini-Game Island? If so, what makes you so sure it would be disallowed by the rules?

There's a minigame room where you can choose to play any minigame, as long as they're unlocked. But having them already unlocked means I have to start recording from a savestate, which is not accepted.

Right, so you're saying there's no "Play all mini-games as a quest" mode?

once you play a minigame in story mode, it will be unlocked in the minigame room. But there's no guarantee that you'll come across every minigame in story mode.

Nope, though MP3 was my favorite because of dual mode.
Signature under contruction, still.

This project has been cancelled (or put on indefinite hold). Apparently my roommate's being a dick and doesn't let me use his computer for tasing anymore. I can't do it on my computer because mine doesn't recognize the n64 controller adapter. I will switch to chessmaster for SNES. If anyone else wants to take this project up, feel free to do so.

Why don't you just use the keyboard/mouse set up?

it's not as precise as a real controller.

As remember of Mario Party, you could use a PS2 controller, which I think is nice.

not if you get a USB configurable controller, like the one I have. (not the exact model, but close enough.) If you get them as a USB controller you don't need an adapter, and they actually have software included to install and in Mupen under input settings it shows up as an option. And don't forget that there's the TAS input plugin, which for some N64 games can completely replace a controller.

Just wondering ... where did you get that controller and how much did it cost?

Best buy, $25. Even if you can't find it, for a game like Mario Party 3 the TAS input plugin should work.
