In Puzzle League (Also known as Tetris Attack), you align blocks of certain colors and shapes into a row or column of 3 or more to clear them. Clearing them in a certain way can lead to chains which rack up lots of points depending on how many chains you accomplish. This is the best way to boost the score. My goal for this game was to hit the max score with a single massive combo as fast as possible.
I had a week off from my other hobby so I thought I'd give this whole TAS thing a shot. Yea, like it was going to be that easy >_>
This is a movie of the Puzzle League side of the Dr Mario/Puzzle League game. I knew this game better as Tetris Attack, which there is already a movie for on this site...but this game has a few differences. First off, you can move the stack while pieces are vanishing. Secondly, the max points is 999999 - which is one more 9 than the SNES version. Major props to everyone who has done anything in frame advance - thinking two moves ahead every step starts to mess with you head after a while.
I took a little bit in the beginning to choose my favorite music and background. If I was going to do this one step at a time, might as well have a background I can appreciate. The "L" button is held the entire time to force the stack up.

Emu = VBA 1.72 rerecord 19.2 - I just downloading the thing and then started recording without tinkering the options

  • is shorter
  • has more appealing graphics and sound
  • uses a better strategy to maximise score.
I'm sorry it took me (us) so long to judge this run.

Interesting, I believe this site already has a run like this but this one is more aggressive because of a couple of programming changes that allow you to keep the combos constant. Hmm, I don't really know how to judge this so I won't vote. Good run none the less though, it takes a keen eye to come up with combos like that (and tools since I don't see a combo of more than 400 coming about in real time but I've been wrong before).

This would have been more exciting if you were submitted a VBM which could complete both Dr. Mario & Tetris Attack, both of which were available for DMG.

Two things, the second of which is slightly off-topic: (1) I don't see the attraction of multi-game TASing myself, but more importantly, it shouldn't become a standard of judging single-game TAS's. Not to say that is what has happened here, but it could easily lean that way at some point. A single game TAS should be treated as such, and same with dual/multi-game TAS's - don't compare them to each other. With comparison brought in, we could reject all multi-game TAS's by saying the individual games' TAS's are more precise...but that's the whole point. (2) Said it before and I'll say it again - the only thing that the term DMG does is needlessly confuse people.

* The ten-thousand runs of Monopoly * ...and Castlevania * ...and SMB2US and J * Battletoads NES and then Battletoads SNES etc. I'll vote once I can find the ROM.

I only brought it up because the submitter decided to inform us that two games were found on the cartridge unnecessarily. It might make one assume just seeing the topic title that it's another MMX+MMX2.

perhaps I should have re-worded it to be same game & same goals I have no problem with the 2 published monopoly runs as they have different goals. Ditto for castlevania, battletoads,etc.

My vote is "meh". I saw a lot of unoptimized clears (time-lag or hotchains are best for this game) and several areas of large combos that just slowed down the game. Lift Limit was also "ON" and the background/sound was rather unappeasing. It was impressive, yes, but I think it could be done much better.

NES Marble Madness. Genny Marble Madness. The sameish game, with some slightly different shortcuts and physics. Sounds a bit like tetris attack and ...other tetris attack.

You do know that you can make the stack keep advancing in Tetris Attack by using the BALL code, right?

Now that I didn't know >_> The max score on Tetris attack is still 99999 as opposed to this game which is 999999. At least I have that! ....right....? Also, Puzzle League was never released as a single game for GBA as far as I know.

BALL only removes the STOP timer. The stack still stops during a clear and some other events.

I liked it. It could be a lot better, but I liked it. You know what would be really awesome? If someone did this same run, but without getting the blocks so high that the music changes.

IMHO, I would recommend using a dedicated cartridge rather than an "X-games-in-1". Aside from the initial delay of selecting a game to begin with, such cartridges may not necessarily be available as the dedicated ones. Also,you may want to just use the name of the game played in the submission title rather than the name of the ROM file. If the single cart isn't available, that's okay (especially since you have an extra digit to work with in your movie.)

I'm not going to vote because I haven't seen the movie yet (nor can I for a while), but I'd probably say no for two reasons: 1. We already have a Tetris Attack movie, and from what I hear there aren't too many differences (although the ability to get higher combos sounds interesting) 2. In my admittedly unfounded opinion, TASes of multipaks should never be made.

Voting yes. The previous Tetris Attack run plays differently (going for 13x chains at a time). I don't understand why multicart would be a problem. Plenty of TASes focus on one part of a game. Very entertaining.

I'm too new to vote, really, but I registered specifically for this run. It was almost hypnotic throughout. I wasn't a big fan of the background, but I found the actual play to be interesting. I'd vote yes if I could. but I can't. yet.

This is perfectly reasonable, as long as you make exceptions for games that only appeared on multicarts, like this one (or a few other circumstances; see also a run that beats all games in SMAS :P)

Because it can't go higher than 13x, although thta also presents another problem: The chain should be increased as much as possible, but as you can see, it often stops time-lag chains and makes a huge combo, which (as far as I can tell) doesn't add to the score at all (in comparison to the chain)

I'm not a major analyzer of minuncious physics of games, so it's plenty hard to me to desincourage a publication by pointing something like "too much 6x combos made the run slower than if more simple chains were used". My very and only criteria to a yes vote is how much stared I was, and in this case the answer is: DAMN A LOT ^^ Voting yes.
