Emulator sync settings:

  • Use wip1 timing

Movie goals:

  • Aim for fastest real time
  • Use no saves
  • Manipulate luck
  • Take damage to save time

About this movie:

This movie is 20,354 frames faster than the currently published any% run, or a little more than 5 and a half minutes. The in-game timer is 2 minutes faster, but that was not a primary goal of mine. The majority of this gain came from a few different factors. The new route alone helped to shave off a few minutes. The arm pumping saved at least a minute or so. Overall better playing and optimization probably saved another minute. I also made great effort to avoid the pause menu and collecting unnecessary items. Not so surprisingly this run follows a similar route as the 14% run, but with the addition of 4 extra items which saved a ton of time by comparison.
Most Super Metroid runs aim for the lowest in-game timer, while this run instead aims for the lowest real time. Due to the fact that I am favoring real time, I have made some unorthodox route choices. These choices keep the flow of the game moving and reduce the amount of items and door transitions down to the near minimum.
Making this run became exponentially easier as I moved along. My knowledge of the game has increased vastly and my playing ability has increased as well. I had a lot of fun making the route and seeing how much faster I could be than the current run. Needless to say I am happy with the results. The run could not have been possible without the help of many people. So I will list the people who helped me in any way during the making of this run.

Huge thanks to the following people (In alphabetical order):

Bisqwit – For nesvideos and the nesvideos forum, without which this run would not exist.
DeHacked – For his micro-storage system which hosted my movie files.
Evilchen – Supplied with a short wip of a run he was working on, and gave support during the making of this movie.
Gocha – For the awesome Snes9x memory watch tool.
JXQ – For his 100% run which set the standard for this game way higher than I thought imaginable. His run was the only run I had to compare times to, and this lead to an overall higher quality of my run. He was also kind enough to give advice and answer all my dumb questions.
Michael Flatley – The man who invented the arm pump! This single trick of his saves countless seconds in any Super Metroid Run. He is also responsible for the Phantoon 1 round kill, which I implemented in my run as a 2 round kill.
moozooh – Another great Super Metroid TASer. He helped motivate me to start my run. He also supplied me with gocha’s Snes9x memory watch tool and his own ini file that contained all the useful memory addresses in Super Metroid. He gave me much support throughout the run and answered many of my questions as well.
nitsuja – The great coder responsible for the Snes9x improvements.
OgreSlayer – Supplied a useful trick, and gave general support throughout the project.
saturn – He has invented countless tricks for this game. In my run I implement his super short charge technique on many occasions, and I also use his amazing Draygon battle strategy. He has given me much support along the way too and answered the many questions that I had during the making of this run.
terimakasih – He set the standard for Super Metroid TASes. Without his movies, I do not think I would have been as interested in doing this run. I used many of the tricks from his 14% run in this run.
And thanks to all the people on the forum that gave support to me during the making of this run.

DeHackEd: Wow. People seem to like it, and anything that empties the stack is a good thing for me.

Yes, it's the same in JXQ's 100%, Teri's previous any% and the recent unassisted any% on SDA. It's just that hero's run must have been the first time m.r.bob ever seen a Super Metroid speedrun. :)

Can anyone actually WATCH the avi? The videofile crashes WMP11 and latest VLC-player just shows a black screen (with sound though).

yes, the avi plays back fine for me, must be a problem with your system. My guess is a missing or faulty codec. Saturn, good job on the subtitle placement btw.

May i ask what h.264-codec and videoplayer you use for playback? EDIT: Nevermind. Problem solved by uninstalling Videosoft h.264-decoder beta and installed lastest ffdshow.

You mean you have installed FFDshow/VLC/MPlayer, and it still doesn't work?

Yes, this is the animation lock I used in my SMR WIP, btw. Knowing that, I'd probably have succeeded in finding/applying it at that particular point be it my run. >_>

Same here. Unmorphing at the last possible frame before losing blue suit when touching the ground will let you keep it and the momentum a bit longer during the unmorph animation. Nevertheless, a nice discovery catnap!

Thanks Tub! I did my best to add it on a important place hard to cut out, and simultaneously not to disturb the watcher as much as possible.

Hard to believe after all these runs that anyone could present a new route with new surprises. The Ridley fight suffers a bit because it takes longer, but so be it. I was positively STUNNED when you skipped the giant baby metroid attack. I was wondering why you weren't taking any hits to expedite the draining process and then you went and SPARK'D. Awesome.

absolutely entertaining stuff! the fact that you never have your health too low avoids the nasty energy alarm, thanks a lot for that! i enjoyed the run a lot more that way. Since this movie has been already published i guess voting isn't important right now, but a gigantic yes is what it deserves. Congratulations!.

I took a week off, and the long-awaited new any% run got submitted and published! Nice! The new route totally surprised me. Samus entered the wrecked ship suicidally early and picked up the Gravity Suit before the Varia Suit. Bouncing over the water with bombs instead of getting the Speed Boost was novel (although my favorite part of any Super Metroid run is watching Samus launch across multiple screens). The new boss order was a big surprise, fighting Phantoon before Kraid, and Ridley before Draygon. Escaping the Baby Metroid was completely unexpected. Skipping the Hi-Jump boots and Screw Attack was a welcome surprise. Very well done. I'm glad I didn't see this stuff coming: I haven't really been following the Super Metroid thread. The Ridley and Mother Brain fights were longer than I expected, but that's forgivable. The Torizo fight in Saturn's RBO teaser looks cooler than this one, but it's definitely better than the previous run. Easy Yes vote.

hopper: My Torizo fight in the RBO run may look cooler, but it's slower than heros one actually. I used many normal beam shots before Missiles, which however slowed down the Torizo to throw his refill-skulls because of lag that is caused by shooting him. Hero got the refills earlier and used more Missiles on him instead, which in the end is slightly faster than what I did in RBO. To that time I didn't know the normal beam would do so much less damage than Missiles do, which makes the normal beam almost worthless in comparison.

Visually, I like how you're in the Torizo's face, and jumping in unison. It looks like you really owned him.

Maybe not that relevant now, but my friend made a trailer for this run and asked me to post it here. So yeah. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4IiybLqTJk I did not make this. Another one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExJIh1muM6Q
