i never had this problem before, im trying to start gens like i normally do, but i get nothing, it doesn't even show the tv noise that normally appears when there's no rom loaded, it shows just an empty window that is not responding. i have changed my display drivers (downgraded them in fact) but nothing changes, i did my driver and registry cleaning perfectly, but i still can't get GENS to work, i've tried the official release but i got the same problem with that too. what in this world is happening?

Try to change the rendering in Gens. I recall that worked for me when I ran windows back in the days. :)

It sounds like Gens is somehow failing to set the bit-depth properly. Try changing your display settings to 16-bit color and see if that does anything.

i can't change any settings because gens freezes at the very start, is there any other way to fix this?

Have you tried redownloading Gens? There's a chance yours might have become corrupted. I can't think of anything else that might cause it except maybe an incompatible directx version.

try deleting gens.cfg to restore default settings ^^ It helps sometimes when something does not work.

I've had this exact problem with the stock 2.12 and 2.14 as well as the "movie 9" versions for months. It does change the bit depth of my desktop from 32 to 16, but it sits on "Gens - Idle" in the title bar with a white window and no menu. Starting it from 16 bit doesn't help. There isn't a gens.cfg file in the directory, and it fails to create one like it should. Putting one there doesn't help.

I never updated DirectX before or after this started happening, it's been 9.0c for the longest time. Same for my video drivers.

Well, I guess the only thing I can suggest is making a list of everything that changed between the last time you opened gens successfully, and the first time it didn't work.

It's been too long to remember exactly, but I know I haven't made any major changes since well before it was still working fine. I had no issues after rebuilding my computer in late 2004, didn't play genesis games for a long time, then this past fall it wouldn't load properly. The only system-wide things I changed were windows updates, but if that were the culprit many more people would have this problem. If there's a debug version I could run to help fix it just let me know and I'd be more than willing to trouble shoot it.

This thread: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5649 fixed my problem. It doesn't make any sense though because there already was a wnaspi32.dll in \system32.
