This is a 2 players movie of Altered Beast, 28.26 seconds (1696 frames) faster than Dan's 1 player version.
It abuses a programming error so that you only need to see the transformation once per level (normally, you need to see it twice on 2 players). Without this alone, a 2 player run would be about 15 seconds slower (not counting other improvements) compared to a 1 player run, because of having to see both players transform.

Bosses memory addresses (HP):

  • 00FFE365 = 1st, 4th and 5th boss
  • 00FFE3A5 = 2nd boss
  • 00FFE377 = 3rd boss
adelikat: The verdict is "accepted for publication". The movie should have used the hardest difficulty setting by using B+Start at the title screen. An improved movie that does not use this will be rejected. As a result, an "improved" movie will be longer than this submission.

Firstly, Altered Beast was the pre-Sonic Genesis/Mega Drive pack-in game. I imagine the Genesis/Mega Drive leveled with the Master System in terms of popularity before Sonic came out, and the game blows, so I don't imagine it did too well after it was sold standalone. Secondly, Castlevania games are usually given short manufacture/distribution periods, so there might not have been enough of SotN produced to hit a top-selling list. Though as mentioned, it was a Greatest Hits game, so regard everything I just said as a huge waste of time.

I think it was just that there weren't many Genesis owners for these early games, and then they were forgotten as time went on. I am particularly thinking of Strider - huge deal at the time, the magazines were giving this one all sorts of awards for being an actual decent arcade port, and it didn't break a million. Didn't know that re: Castlevania. =)

I see I'm a little late in giving my input here, but please note that only 28 movies on this site (out of almost 900!) are rated 5.0 or below (based on http://tasvideos.org/MovieStatistics/LowestAverageRating.html). Altered Beast is the 21st worst rated movie on this site. The movie might be rated as merely slightly below average, but when compared to the standards of this site, a 4.8 is indeed a poor score. If the game is good, I can't see it by watching this TAS. If the game is popular, the ratings certainly don't show it (either that, or viewers think the game is unsuited for a TAS).

Looking at my average ratings I'm giving about 5.2 for entertainment and 7.4 for technical, I usually try to maintain an average of 5 for entertainment and 7.5 for technical, I often try to keep it that way by adjusting some of my ratings as time goes on. EDIT: Going by this you can be pretty sure that somewhere in the high sixes, low sevens would be somewhat average overall score.

Even though wikipedia can be edited by anyone, it doesn't generally mean it's mostly edited by ignorant morons and other dummies. There is a lot of competent people who make good input and protect articles from bad input. Our site is also a wiki, and there are 52 editors — doesn't mean it's any less reliable the way it is.

It still stands that wikipedia is a tertiary source at best, so it's not on par for "proper" citation. That being said, all these asides are getting out of hand. People haven't mentioned the actual submission in ~25 responses. I know that I had a hand in it, but I'd rather this didn't turn in to a "ALTERED BEAST SUCKS AND WIKIPEDIA IS UNRELIABLE" thread, lest we all forget about FODA's work.

While the run should be accepted and obsolete the current run, the game is still a steamy pile of shit. Were it not for the precedent run, I would be against publishing this. I was not entertained at all. Having a rating lower than 5 is shit, any run with such a rating should not have been accepted in the first place. I am not a fan of the gay bear sex, but I also don't think it should have any weight when determining the fate of this submission. The submission should be judged on the quality of the run (which seemed good), and the quality of the game (which sucks balls). I am voting no, but it should still be published.

Double Dragon was out in the arcades in 1987. Altered Beast didn't come out till 1988. Revolutionary? I really find that hard to believe. The game is still a ton of fun to play 2 player though. It gets way too much hate from people nowadays. Of course, i love all beat em ups as well, so if you are not a big fan of the genre, this will definately not be your cup of tea.

Aaaaaaanyway, about the difficulty setting: fact 1: The game doesn't have an options menu fact 2: When you finish the game, it restarts on "HARD" mode. fact 3: If you finish hard mode, it restarts on "HARDEST" mode fact 4: If you finish hardest mode, it restarts on "HARDEST" mode again, forever fact 5: There's a debug menu accessible by the cheat code B+START that lets you choose a difficulty setting, amount of lives, starting level and amount of health. So it's a cheat code, I would have used it from the start if I knew how to access it. But I tried gamefaqs and it wasn't there so I assumed I was mixing things up in my memory and it was probably golden axe, so I ignored it. If this movie is published, it shouldn't mention anything about sex, the submission text should be edited to remove the comment there, and a suggestion should be made in the movie description that a newer version must use hardest mode. What happens on hardest mode is that there are many more enemies, so the movie would be a minute slower. The bosses have same amount of energy, but are more aggresive.

I don't know... I had lots of fun playing this game in the arcades back in the early nineties, and I remember it fondly. (note: the original arcade game is better than the Sega Genesis port)

Well, revolutionary on Genesis maybe, since it was one of the first games for it ever out (if not the first but that I am not sure of). It was out for it even before Sonic was.

Agreed. And I will be doing exactly this.

This is the reason the hard mode should be done; it adds difficulty other than boss/enemy HP. This is exactly in line with the guidelines As far as the entertainment choices. They didn't entertain me much as I found it particularly sillly; too much so. Though more entertaining that just standing there doing nothing perhaps. I put in on a level slightly above wobbling. Therefore, I am annoyed that one scene cost 26 frames of lag. I think preciesly 0 should be wasted for this. I don't think anything displayed in the movie it too inappropriate for the site. Certainly not more inappropriate than other games published (Smash TV for instance).

About the story of the game: I've read that the girl is Persephone, the bald man in purple robe is Hades, the heroes that are ressurected by Zeus are "probably" Theseus and Perseus, and they have to kill many Cerberus on the way inside hell to rescue Persephone (Zeus daughter).
