Here's my desktop. I have two monitors, my right one being the primary one at the moment. They both run at 1600×1200, though the right monitor can go up to 2048×1536 (which I use for playing Worms Armageddon). As you can see, I like abstract art. The background images are by a couple of the great artists at DeviantArt. My OS is Windows XP and my shell is bbLean. The image is here: http://lex.clansfx.co.uk/image/screenshots/desktop3.png Warning: This is a 4.03 MB lossless image. Mushroom! Hello, fellow Autechre fan. :) Oooh, you're into Venetian Snares too. So good!

Ha, thanks a lot. The artist who created it is brilliant. Here's the original deviation by viperv6.

I saw your excel sheet with "bokslut" in it and made me think "birthday cake". I still think you should try green again instead of boring blue.

Ah, well that's not how unix desktop screenshots are usually made. Because an important part of the desktop experience is also how the window borders, icons and transparencies are made, for example. In my case, the background image is almost never seen in normal use, so it doesn't make sense to showcase it.

If I may quote a computer technician, "The reason your computer is running so slowly is that you have over 300 items on your desktop, which take up about 25 gigabytes of space". I moved them all, but the files are piling up. Given that I've been away for a week, there a load of movies published that I gotta see!

I just disable the background entirely... For a while I thought the Linux-or-windowsblinds-esque window borders were neat and interesting to have, but I've grown to prefer minimalism.. I just use the standard "Classic" windows with a dark scheme and no background at all. I've never been able to get used to any background except subtle tiling ones...

Nice. I once programmed a background that flickered through 15 screenshots a second to make a movie file. I got used to it.

But that is the distinguishing feature of what makes them desktop screenshots, as opposed to browser, IRC, or other application screenshots.
If I posted a screenshot of my desktop with all applications minimized I could just as well just post a link to my bg image. I don't have *anything* in my desktop. Even the task bar is completely hidden by default (ie. when not hovering it with the mouse). It's just a plain bg image.

Actually, you can also do mplayer -rootwin avifile.avi to play an AVI directly as the desktop background. If I recall correctly, a similar option also existed (in MPlayer) for Windows. Not that it is pleasing at all. :P

Am I missing something very obvious when I say I don't see the connection between bokslut and birthday cake? I'm probably not going back to green again for a third time. Having it in my avatar is enough :) I might try to find something else for a background though, we'll see. Not that many sweet 3200x1200 images avaliable I'm guessing.

a lot more than there were a year ago. deviantart has a whole section with multi monitor wallpapers (not all in the desired resolution though) gamewallpapers.com has some, but since they stopped providing the images with easy-to-guess pathnames, you'll have to pay. You can also use one of the panoramashots from Two Worlds, if you like the game or at least the game engine. Then there's a couple more at hebus.com (warning: french and ad-contaminated), or just google for "dual screen wallpaper" or something. you can also use scalable vector graphics (svg's), kde-look.org has some (and probably other sites I'm not aware of). In your case, you'll have to convert them to something windows-readable.

I manage to fill my 3200×1200 desktop space with great art just fine. I have a whole directory of nice abstract images I found on DeviantArt, if you'd like. I'm in #nesvideos as LexSfX.

People say I rock a fairly simple desktop set up, and I tend to agree. I'm no zen minimalist or anything, but that doesn't stop me from constantly deleting stuff from my toolbars and whatnot. Shortcuts I don't employ within the last 3 weeks usually get removed, assuming I don't remove the shortcut target as well

http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/4929/desktopshiftplusoneok7.png Simplicity is Bliss (or is that the other way around?). Note that most of those icons are useless to me, but I never really bother to delete stuff like that as it messes with the order of the icons which I do actually use.
<Zurreco> if so called professional players cant adapt to every playing field, theyre obviously not that great

switched to evilwm. switched all my kde apps accordingly (juk/konversation/kopete/konqueror/konsole becomes xmms/bitchx/centericq/firefox/xterm). slowly warming up to focus-follows-mouse.

My current background is a video of Forza Motorsport 2. Running Vista has its perks. edit: picture here.

Mine's animated as well. Rain drops. And it responds to mouse and windows movements. I can also put any AVI or any screen saver as my background image, but they tend to be too busy or CPU intensive.

The nice thing about this is it pauses the video whenever there's a fullscreen application running, so it uses less CPU.
