I know this option is available on some other bulletin boards, and I was wondering if it was possible (or ever would be possible) here. To clarify: Say funguy10 returned, and for some reason he didn't get banned again. Since he contributed nothing to discussion, would it be possible to "ignore" (ie not see) any of his posts, while keeping the rest of the topic intact?

Who gives a fuck seriously. If you see his name, don't read his post.

Because I was curious.

Contact a moderator to get the offending posts / offender dealt with. If the moderation does not agree with you, the only option remaining is self-delusion, as suggested by erokky.

No problem, like I said, I was just curious. Thanks for the info.

A quote from Epictetus: "Don't surrender your mind. If someone were to casually give your body away to any old passerby, you would naturally be furious. Why then do you feel no shame in giving your precious mind over to any person who might wish to influence you? Think twice before you give up your own mind to someone who may revile you, leaving you confused and upset."

I would love this option, and see no reason for intentionally not including it. Small size tags were forcefully removed; why didn't everyone just ignore those?

the one who "intentionally not included" an ignore function is the phpBB guys, the reason probably being "too much work". phpBB2 does not have ignore lists, and it's impossible to add them without rewriting half of the board. phpBB3 finally has ignore lists, but it isn't finished yet and it's unknown whether bisqwit will upgrade this board. He's made lots of modifications to phpBB2 and has several scripts directly accessing forum data (mostly user data), those mods and scripts would need to be rewritten when upgrading the board. If you really really need technical help to ignore someone, you'll need to write your own custom css / transparent proxy / greasemonkey-script / whatever.

while (fetch array from mysql where userignore = from you) morons[] = user if (postuser is in morons) skip post I can't see this being difficult unless phpBB is coded like shit, in which case I'm then asked how the hell anybody uses such a crappy board.

phpBB isn't the nicest code I know, their most frequent deadly sin is huuuge variable scopes without commenting the purpose of said variables. you're forgetting a couple of things: + add link to ignore a user + add a panel to manage your ignore list + limit the amount of ignored users (important when trying to keep the user's ignore list in an array) + ignore PMs + ignore posts in search results + adjust "last post"-display and don't display new posts from ignored users + either display a placeholder for ignored posts (and add the needed templates), or fetch more posts from the DB to get your x posts per page + disable notification emails for posts from ignored users + stuff I probably forgot. when done right, it's a lot of work. If you want a half-assed hacky solution, see my proposals above.

Points that actually matter: + link to ignore a user + a panel to manage your ignore list + ignore PMs + disable notification emails for posts from ignored users Everything else is fairly useless gunk that doesn't actually matter or can be easily justified. I'm suprised you didn't add "automatic removal of quoted, ignored user's posts", to be honest.

Oh please, just install the Firefox extension for such, and use it for every phpBB forum you visit. Install Greasemonkey - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748 Then the Greasemonkey user ignore script for phpBB - http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/831.user.js

Awesome. It's nice to know that javascript can be useful on these forums for once. Are you SURE you want to append your signature to this short post? Yes, I'm positive, thanks for forcefully triple-checking, asshat.

As far as I know, that feature is no longer in use here. And even if it were, you shouldn't use language like that here.

*Looks at erokky's post above, which you already referred to* Seriously, don't you have a size tag to moderate or something?

I don't like to reply to a post only to nag about language, and as I was busy at that time, I didn't raise the issue at IRC either. Afterwards, I forgot about it. It is true his post style is not any more permissible than yours. However, when I replied to your post, I didn't post only to nag about your language, but also about what you wrote. Also, if you have complaints about my moderation decisions, I suggest you post those complaints more formally (in a way that can be addressed) instead of resorting to passive or implicit aggression like that second line in your post. Such behavior borderlines on being a personal attack.

Of course. There's always a reason.

Yeah, that worked wonders for jimsfriend. I'll get right on it.

Sorry to derail the thread moreso, but if you are that concerned about language, you could always include some sort of hocus pocus miracle censorer. Extra effort perhaps, but the end result will likely be what you desire. And if you suggest just warning of individuals, you might consider the above case where you missed a stronger offence but caught a lesser one, making it seem like some sort of favouritism. A good ol' censorer doesn't have favourites. It only has asterisks.

I don't like those. I'm mostly concerned with the tone of language, not with the words themselves. (Though in most cases, the selection of words affects the appearance of the tone of the message.) And an automate cannot determine the tone.

Just a reminder that vice and virtue lose meaning without the freedom of will to choose the one or the other.

I, too, have mentioned to Bisqwit about the possible usefulness of a specific-user ignore feature for this forum, as a means to significantly decrease unnecessary conflict between users who simply fail to get along. I never got a solid reply, though. But if an admin wanted to make a useful modification to the forum code, this one would surely be useful, where size-tag moderation and signature-squelching were largely not. After all, not everyone uses firefox.

It is possible. Perhaps you meant "not easily determine the tone". False positives would be very likely due to the nature of a forum. (That, and JXQ's lovely bouts of sarcasm would likely throw the censorbot off to the point that it just censors everything he says... of course I'm sure it'd be considered 'unintentional behavior'.)

Ooh, another way to hide things other than those pesky tags. Just surround everything in a multitude of cursewords and vulgarity. Mmm, what a wonderful idea. [Edit by Bisqwit: Image archived]

Only certain curse words, xkeeper. The tone of the post is important. Also, the person who posted it.

Xkeeper, I find your protest-protest-defy-the-rules-and-annoy attitude very immature. It's like you go to a mall, where rollerskating is forbidden, and intentionally loiter around at the inside wearing rollerskates, just to piss off the guards. Just because you don't happen to agree with the rule. You have been repeatedly warned about this, and yet you pursue your demonstrations. I am hereby reinstating your ban. I am also warning you, JXQ. I know you have a lot of supporters here, and that you have contributed a lot, but your attitude has been recently less than constructive.
