I found something that you might find amusing: non-tool-assisted videos of a skilled player playing Super Mario World Kaizo, also known as "A--hole Mario," a rather sadistic hack of Super Mario world. I also found ROMs of these hacks, but no patches; if I can figure out how to extract the patches from the pre-patched ROMs I could upload them in case any of you want to try it. It would make for an amusing TAS demo, methinks. WARNING: These videos give away the solutions to these levels. The problem with these videos is that it always boils down to a long series of failures. Yes, it was funny to see you die from method x once. No, it isn't funny to see you die from method x thirty times over before you get past it just to reach death method y. I can only watch these for a few minutes before I give up out of frustration as a viewer. "JUST DO IT ALREADY, ARG!"

actually this particular video series is pretty good about only showing unique methods. If the player dies in the same way twice, the second time it skips the lead up and goes straight to the death. It also tends, after death, to restart at the current problem spot, not forcing you to rewatch the whole level over and over to get the full solution.

I made my post after watching the first three videos. While I agree that this was better than other videos I've seen, this was still too repetitive and aggravating for my tastes.

I did a TAS of the first level for fun, and it was all neat and everything but somehow it didn't get saved. Now I'm sad. Something is weird with my emulator or with the rom.

Actually, http://fromearth.net/LetsPlay/Kaizo/ This one has narration in it as well. With curse words.

Hmm... couldn't you easily create IPS patches with Lunar IPS or SNESTool?

I linked the IPS for this in my first reply...

For the lazy people, HERE ARE THE IPS PATCHES (BOTH OF THEM) (uploaded again... apparently there was something bogus about the second file)

I definitely saw a TAS of this somewhere on TASvideos, but I don't recall where. I remember that it was on Youtube, and the screen was almost covered with Japanese subtitles.

Here's one I found of the first level. I believe the one I made was 53 time units faster :) Edit: Apparently I remembered wrong.

world 1 tas world 2 tas special world tas they're not really speedruns as much as they're tool-assisted walkthroughs. still an interesting watch, though.

Watching that "TAS walkthrough", it seems to me that a lot of the difficult parts become easier if you attempt to get through them without hesitation. Examples are jumping over the plants before the chuck starts throwing baseballs (at the end of level 1 or 3?), or jumping over the spikes before the boos start swooping down (in the ghost house). I also find it amusing that the creator of the hack decided to use the "fast autoscroll" command in one level. Just so everybody knows, once the screen scrolls fast enough, it's impossible for Mario to keep ahead of the screen, and he gets forced to the left side. Eventually, the screen scrolls so fast that Mario is "crushed" into the left side and dies (unless you're in a water level, but that's a different story...).

Weird, he never died for me. That is, until the end of the level, where he suddenly dies... even trying to prevent it using a goal post/whatever won't help. Though, what's different about water levels?

Arguably I could see how making the hack, TASing the hack, and watching a video of someone beating the hack, could be enjoyable. But why oh God why would someone actually try to play it? It's torture. You might say bragging rights, or whatever. I know if I spent 100 tries beating a level I might get lucky and do it. I'll pass, though.

Well, I seem to remember differently, but I just checked, and you're right... Back when my friend was making Super Challenge World, we were experimenting with fast autoscroll. I think we put a wall behind Mario and set it to move with the screen, and naturally Mario would be crushed into the wall after awhile. The difference with a water level was that Mario wouldn't be crushed into the wall because of the nature of water levels... that's probably where my confusion started. The reason a water level is preferable is because Mario can actually move up and down instead of being forced to the floor at all times. On the subject of fast-autoscrolling, Whomp's Castle in Super Challenge World featured an underwater autoscroller, if anybody remembers that.

I'm not the brightest cookie in the jar, but I managed to find the smv I thought I lost. So for some extra fun, here's the first level done reasonably optimal. It's 53 time units long, compared to the tool-assisted walkthrough which is 72. Click me.

That was very cool and even more entertaining than the previous movies. I'd love to see a full movie of this sick game.

Seconded. It's A LOT BETTER than Super Demo World. Ididn't play those games too much, but Kaizo Mario World 2 seems to be a little better...

Although I like looking at players struggle with a hack, this hack by nature lacks professionalism, just like 99.9% of hacks out there. True, a Kaizo Mario World speedrun or TAS is more entertaining than a Super Demo World TAS (partly because of extreme real-play difficulty as well as no cape Mario), but Super Demo World is by far better as a game. This hack is like Air (SMB1), but in a more twisted way. Edit: Did anyone notice the "grading scheme" at the end of each video series? (the one with the player dying a lot) Kaizo 1 video : Kaizo 2 video: I know it's a joke, but still... :X I'm surprised that the player managed as few as about 1000 deaths for each.

Are there any videos of this which aren't just a constant montage of getting killed? I want to see a level beaten, not just getting killed. I feel insulted, like I'm too dumb to understand the hack is ridiculously difficult, the author of these vids needs to shove it into my brain by showing ten minutes of getting killed with fifteen seconds of random play here and there.] EDIT: Nevermind, didn't see mushroom's post earlier in the topic.

I hope you'll get bored again for...hmm...let's say until it's finished. ;) @FractalFusion I don't think this game is great. I don't even understand why anyone would create such an almost impossible game. But I enjoy a well-executed TAS of it.
