Hi, at first, the N-Longplay project is not a speedrunproject so it shall not stands in rivalry to TASvideo. It`s more an historical project, similar the C64-Longplay project, to show NES Games for people who maybe don`t know the games or want to see the full game without glitches, shortcuts or skip the inbetween sequences. I want to sort the videos in a chronological order to show the history of NES games in the N-Longplayserie. I don`t show all games which were ever released. This could be a little hard. But I want to show 150-200 representative games from the NES ärea. For this no game should be released two times as a video. I had an NES back in time and was a good player in most of my games. With the help from emulatortools much games should be not a big problem for me. But I cannot complete all games at least not in a good way. So I want to ask in this forum if some people have the motivation to play some games too for the project. I think it`s could not so hard for the most of this community `cause the rules of total perfectness are not so tigh like in a speedrun. I make some rules for the c64 longplayproject, it`s another system but the rules are related to the NES project except the SlowDowns. It`s wished to play an NESgame at 40%. Later I will compressed the videos without great consider for the filesize. I want to show the games in a good quality. An archive in a bad quality don`t make much sense. I registered an n-longplay domain yet and will build an own site for the project if I have more videos. The first two videos can be watched here Greets Monty :)

It is best to not insult those whom you are asking for favors, Monty. Perfection is taken extremely seriously here, and, I would daresay more so than normal speedruns.

That's not what he meant. He meant that the rules for the videos on his site aren't as strict as the rules for total perfection present in speedruns here. I disagree with the 40% thing. You can repeatedly press a button at 40% speed faster than when playing on 100% speed. If you're going to be faithfull to normal gaming, you should play at 100%, using savestates, but NOT abusing luck. The idea has value in it that it represents an archive of the games being played in their original "purpose", which may be vague on a lot of games, but still has value. I'm not sure if I would access it much, perhaps for newer games I would, because as a game developer it'd be easier to watch several videos of new games being played than playing them myself. For the major audience though, I can only think of watcher seeking to satisfy nostalgic feelings towards certain games.

Yep, this was what I meant. :) I don`t want to rest on other peoples work. Most of the games I will play self. But by the games which I never could do alone, or the genres in which I sucks, I am addicted from other players. Good example is "Metroid" or the "Zelda" games. But if I want an archiveserie for NES-games I couldn`t miss this games. (I hope my english was good enough to make my point clear )

I don`t wanted to devalue your work. I know that there is a lot of work in good-looking gamevideos. I wanted to say that an longplay is much easier in contrast to an speedrun.

I don`t mean that you have to played bad. But the "maybe I can be here 2-3 frames faster" or "if I shoot this enemy I lost a half second" perfection must not be. At first the sense of the serie is to presented this game to someone which maybe don`t know that game and want to see an complete walkthrough.

I know what you mean but I think to play at 40% would watch like an really good player plays that game. I don`t want to fooled the viewer and I don`t would say the videos what played live. But I think it`s not impossible that a really good player could play a game in this state live. And least I saw an NES Metroid 100% gamevideo which are ripped from VHS. I was really impressed. The player must be a god or makes his whole life nothing others as played Metroid. It could be a little hard to find a god for every game which I need for the longplayserie. But if I could simulate a God with TAS-Videos I think it`s a legitimate thing. I don`t know if you see my Donkey Kong Longplay which I linked. I am not bad in that game (OK, the game isn`t really hard) and think the video could be played exactly so without TAS if someone really-really good in that game. But an 40% option makes the work to create an good-looking gamevideo much easier. The difference between the longplayserie and a regular speedrun is more an informationthing. Speedruns are made for competition and a really cool think in the case the viewer self knows that game. But someone who don`t know the game knows after a speedrun not really much more `cause the player run with an inhuman speed thru that game, skipped all betweensequenzes and use glitches to jump over complete levels.

Yep, this is a audience which I want to hit too. But even a 40% TAS Video could be informative about a game.

I apologize, I misunderstood. I thought you were comparing speedruns to TASes, not your longplay movie to speedruns.

SDA ? I think you mean speedruns. (Sorry if I am going wrong, don`t know for what SDA stands). The sense of speedruns is to use all glitches, warps and other tricks to outflank the program with the goal to reach fastest as possible the goal. But most speedruns are too fast to overview or understand a game as viewer.

It`s OK. Myself mixed-up TAS and Longplays. :)

SDA = Speed Demos Archive, the best place to find unassisted speedrun videos. So basically, you want videos of games played well but in no particular hurry, with no glitch abuse etc? Do you want the videos to be 100% walkthroughs (find all the items and do it in an order that someone can recreate even without that much skill; talk to everyone whenever their dialogue changes; watch every plot cutscene; etc) or do you want the games to be "completed but meandering"? And what games do you want videos for? Sounds to me like an excuse for me to play some old games that I like and just happen to record it, with almost no pressure in how to make the video, so I'd be willing to make a few if I had time.

The games should be played in a fast way. It must not be a battle for seconds but a hurry way should be good. For this reason are Tool Assisted videos great.

More "complete and meandering". No need to search all dialogues but when there is a dialogue which are inescapable or explains a mission it`s important that the viewer can read the text. (most i hold such a text 5-6 seconds). This 100% thing is variable. I think longer RPGs would be to long in the case the player found all items. But by games like Metroid were a 100% walkthrough great. Same by Zelda. It were cool when the video contains all Heartitems. I made an simple guide for the c64 project. The NES Project have the same rules. (except the 85% speedlimit). (part 1 is irrelevant and milestones means Savepoints) http://www.c64-longplays.de/guide.html But at the moment metroid and Zelda are far away from the actual state. I want to made the videos chronological and collect videos for the first 3 years. (1983-1985) At the moment the games I need for the serie but don`t made them myself are: Excitebike Ice Climber (2 Playermode) Track & Field (was never good in sport games :( ) Greets and Thanks for your help :)

On my list of important games, I see 21 games 1986-and-before and 36 games in 1987.. that's using the NES release dates, and you might have a different opinion on important. What's your list like?

I use a list which I made with help from an NES Forum. But if you mean that there are some missing games I would glad if you help to supplement the list. :) These are the first 21 games from the years 1983-1985 * are ready or in the making * Donkey Kong * Donkey Konk Jr Mario Bros. (2 Player Mode) * Pinball Tennis Xevious Duck Hunt Excitebike Kung Fu 1942 (capcom) Ice Climber Hogan's Alley Urban Champion Wrecking Crew Wild Gunman Devil World Balloon Fight Yie Ar Kung Fu Soccer Track & Field Super Mario Bros.

Yie Ar Kung Fu wasn't released on the NES (only Famicom), Xevious was released in 1989 (1984 on Fami), etc., so our lists differ. Here's my until-1987 list: -1984 Devil World -1985 Clu-Clu Land Duck Hunt Excitebike Gauntlet Gyromite Hogan's Alley Ice Climber Kung Fu Super Mario Bros Wrecking Crew -1986 1942 Balloon Fight Commando Donkey Kong Donkey Kong Jr. Ghosts 'n Goblins Gradius Karate Champ Mario Bros Urban Champion "the worst game Nintendo has ever made" Anyway like I said above if I have time I'll gladly claim a game or three from any list and make a video. Do you care what emulator is used or what format the video's in?

Thanks :) Mmh... you are the third person who says that Urban Champion is not really a good game. I think I will delete this from the list.

A vmv. file for VirtueNes were perfect. It has IMHO the comfortablest videooption.

Thanks for the example :) I like the Amiga Longplayproject. But I think most of the videos are far away from good played. It could be `cause the amigaemulator have no rerecord option so most of the longplays are played really to save and slow. Thats one of the reason I started the c64-Longplay project complete new onced. The earlier videos was made without rerecord too so I played very safe for not losing a life. But for a idea what I mean, here is the YouTube Link to the C64 Project which are similar to the planned N-Longplay Project. http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=DerSchmu

Urban Champion is notable precisely because it's terrible. Besides, it's mentioned in Tetris DS. (then again there are games that are in WarioWare and Smash Brothers that should really be forgotten already and this probably qualifies too). I like VirtuaNES best so I'm glad you prefer it too ^^

:D Keep memory in bad games isn`t my mission. This work leave I to other people. *look to the angry videogame nerd :D* I like VirtuaNES best so I'm glad you prefer it too ^^
:) Really one of the comfortabelst emulators for making movies from video games. But before you started a game tell it before, please. I were double works if one game makes twice `cause someone don`t knows that a video is in work at the moment.

Urban Champion was playable before we had Double Dragon 1 vs mode. Then we had Street Fighter 2 and these games (urban champion, double dragon 1 vs mode) became useless.

Someone here who have the motivation to made the game for an video ? At the moment I have just the first 5 videos which contains: 01 Donkey Kong 02 Donkey Kong JR. 03 Mario Bros. (2 Player) 04 Pinball 05 Tennis (2 Player) Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong JR. can be downloader here. http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=n-longplay (hosted by archive.org) Meanwhile I have an own collection for the c64-project by archive.org :) If I have enough videos for the N-Longplayproject I will try to get an collection for this project too.
