Post subject: How close are we to PS2 TASing

If this is a stupid post please don't get mad. I really want to make a TAS of a PS2 game and I was wondering how close we are to the possibility. Will it ever happen at all. Would it be the near future or years? Let me know thanks.

Not close at all. PS2 emulation is often too slow on even AMD X2 and Intel Core2 with current-gen vidcards, and there aren't many games that run with acceptable accuracy. Ontop of that, savestate support does not exist currently. Try again in ten years.

Ten might be too much, but at least 3-4 are due. Basically, we don't even have PS1 TASing yet, let alone PS2 that's harder to emulate.

Well, you'll have to wait for an emulator that can not only play commercial games, but play them accurately. Then you'll have to hope that certain emulator is open source, so people can add TAS functionality. It'll probably take a while to make sure it always plays the game back the same also, what with high level emulation/ dynamic recompilation and all (this needs confirming that I'm not talking out of my ass about this particular matter..)

Which is actually why I said ten. Ten years ago, PS1 emulation was about where PS2 emulation is right now.

Really though, TASing didn't really exist 10 years ago. TASing (consoles) is really only a little older than this site. From the interviews I read, Bisq started this site pretty much right after the '1st' console run, Morimoto's SMB3. So, the majority of TAS tools have occurred either from this site, or influence from this site. Also, as an aside, TASing relies less on achieving a frame rate than actually playing a game does. Since we are usually playing 1 frame at a time anyway, and movie-to-AVI can go at 300 frames per second or 1 frame per second, it just doesn't matter. Once the video is in AVI format, it will seem real-time, regardless of how fast or slow it was encoded.

Right, but you're missing the point here. Tool-assistance will not be far off once proper emulation is possible, but that emulation itself is quite far off. We are barely perfecting emulation for consoles that are 4 generations old: last generation consoles are nowhere near being finished (except DS emulation, which is coming along very well).

Exactly -- however, there is one important factor: -- The main audience of emulators expects the emulators to provide a realtime (i.e. fluent) playing experience for the games that work on that emulator. An emulator being slow and laggy is not acceptable. -- Whereas when making TASes, it does not matter how slowly the emulator runs; because the run will be created slowly anyway. The actual visual recording, i.e. the AVI, will play at normal speed regardless of the speed of the emulator that created it relative to its host system. This means that even when there is theoretically enough knowledge to make a fully TASable emulator, such emulator won't probably yet appear, because most emulator design is guided primarily by gamers' wishes; they want emulator to work fast and fluently, and if that is impossible to fulfill, such emulator won't exist.
