It's really incredible how people can misinterpret what other people write simply because of a few words in a subject line (in this case "hate" and "speedruns"). Seems like some people only see what they want to see.
Let me straighten some things: I like watching speedruns. I regularly check SDA to see if new speedruns have appeared for games I have played in the past. For instance, just a few days ago, I downloaded and watched the Driver speedrun (for the PC), which was recently added. I found it entertaining.
Moreover, I'm a huge fan of QdQ speedruns. I even *bought* Quake (in a pack which had Quakes 1-3) partially because I wanted to watch the speedruns on the actual game. I constantly check the QdQ site to see if new speedruns have been published.
If someone got the impression that I somehow hate speedruns or SDA, that impression was completely false.
What I *do* hate is that in a few speedruns it seems like the runner does his best to annoy the viewer, for no good reason. I also find it bothersome if some speedrun uses the lowest possible graphics settings which make the game look like crap (although, as I have mentioned several times, I understand there may be technical reasons to do that).
If you want to laugh at this opinion of mine, then go ahead. My response to such condescending attitude will still be a big FU. If you don't want to discuss it seriously, then don't.
(Edit: And to make things clear, the "you" did *not* refer to moozooh. It referred to whoever wrote what he quoted, and anyone else having the same idiotic attitude.)
That just makes my head hurt. I wasn't aware we were such a troubling corner of society, degrading the quality of life of gamers the world over.
I wonder if this is how Galoob felt.
Yeah lol, that thread contains my legendary "wall of text" post. Still can't believe I wrote that much on the subject, yet how little it changed (I guess) in the long run. Good times, good times. :)
People should loosen up a lot more than that to stop taking everything personally.
Wow, the first post is the biggest pile of BS I have seen in a long time.
Obnoxious too. First he basically classifies TASers as a bunch of cheating people, and then he as the audacity to say "I expect that a friendly debate will follow this post, and I will punish any disrespect shown to any member of the speed running community, whether TAS or not."

I never had a need or want to hate speedruns, or anyone associated with them.
But I now officially hate Nate.
EDIT: I read a bit further, and I now only officially hate his first (and some subsequent) posts.
SWEET! Nate defined us as a Minority!!!
Help, help! I'm being repressed! Can't you see the violence inherent in the system?
He also makes so many, many mind-numbing retarded accusations. Wow.
Also, his idea of how democracy is suppose to work is... awe-inspiring stupidity.

When someone insults what you like to do, or how you spend your time, or what you believe in, you get edgy. This happens with religion, politics, and apparently speed running. But, there can be a difference between "edgy" and "defending what you believe in".
Although, from the very first post, Warp basically said he didn't like some speedruns because the graphics in some games are watered down, and there was some annoying flickering of nightvision goggles during cutscenes (hardly an indictment of all speedruns in general). I know how he feels, especially when watching a TAS full of 'quivering' (ie back and forth every frame). Annoying movements is not a problem specific to speedruns alone.
I like this thread, it's crazy.
Though the "TAS-hate thread" at Mk2k is still my favorite.
Definitely worth a read :)
I think I have just become more stupid by reading the first 4 pages of that thread...thanks a lot Cpadolf...
I'm sciencing as fast as I can !

Oh it's more than that. Seriously, Nate is off his rocker. I hate to 'Godwin' this thread, but boy does that kid have some megalomaniac tendencies.
'The TAS problem' can only be caused by the extermination of TASes and TASers. He's two steps from using his 'Majority' status to pin the star of david to every TAS. He talks as if it is a 'crime' for a TAS to exist, because poor idiots refuse to look up a definition, or read.
Luckily, he has zero power. What an angsty little kid.
EDIT: HAHA! Made it to page 11. Looks Like JXQ and I agree on something.

While we're in this HATE THREAD, let me tell you I HATE YOU CPADOLF FOR BRINGING UP THE SUBJECT.
Seriously, there must be a limit for pseudo-innocent baiting. :P

Nate has fortunately changed his thoughts on TASes. I am sure he regrets some of the things he said in those days but whats important is that Speedruns and TASes can coexist and help each other out (route planning, tricks, glitches etc), which history has shown.
Hate is such a strong word and I dont think Warp hates the things he has said about speedruns. I believe sometimes we dont have better things to do and nitpick about silly stupid things. Imagine if we all were filthy rich businessmen, we would be so busy with this and that that issues like these would never ever been addressed or considered.

Now;
Speedruns are meant to show of SKILL of something, just like a marathon race is supposed to show of that runners SKILL in running and endurance. Sure, we're entertained by watching a marathon or a similar sport, but that's because we want to see where they excel and where they fall behind.
Have a speedrun as entertaining as you like, it's not going to change the amount of skill that's needed to produce the run.
TAS !> Regular Speedruns
Regular Speedruns !> TAS
Level of entertainment != Level of skill.
To continue with my previous example, if a marathon runner was trying to entertain AS WELL as show off skill, then he could do so by waving to fans, making funny gestures and such. Although this may be entertaining to the viewers, I'm pretty sure it will put him off his mindset of what his current goal is.
Relating this to speedrunning, I'm pretty sure if a speedrunner were to consider entertainment, he could lose his mindset of what he's trying to accomplish. TAS CAN accomplish this level of skill AND entertainment as they have the ability to re-do things more actively than speedrunners. If a speedrunner is, for example, about to set up for a difficult trick that follows a extended cut-scene, that speedrunner would most likely not be trying to entertain the viewer as much as he/she is trying to prepare for the up-coming trick. The ability of a TAS, is they're able to slow things down and allow a smaller cause of error to happen so they are able to spend that extra amount of time entertaining the viewer.
As has been mentioned, most people watch or become involved in speedruns/TASes that are of games they are familiar with. I can't say that I haven't watched a TAS because I wanted to see what the game was like, I'm sure many of you have aswell.
ONE thing I do not understand about all the people arguing in here... Have you actually considered what that site considers in relation to entertainment?
TASVideos' Why and How page.SDA's FAQs PageTASVideos wrote:
Our primary goals are to create art and provide entertainment.
SDA wrote:
...exhibition videos are not SDA's focus. If a game allows cutscenes to be skipped, then we require runners to skip them, and they are probably not interested in watching them for the hundredth time either.
As you can see, SDA does not require a direct focus on entertainment value, while TASVideo's main goal is to PROVIDE entertainment.
The way I see it, the people arguing that regular speedruns are stupid because they don't provide entertainment are arguing so because they're used to seeing the TAS environment where things are made for entertainment, while SDA members couldn't give one way or the other.
Reading through this topic, I'm actually quite disappointed that a hobby such as this has even turned into a war between two worlds. It feels like a Guitar Hero/Rock Band argument or a Call of Duty 4/Halo 3 argument.
Mmkay, I know this is a dangerous ground to be making a first post on, but really. Jesus christ guys, get a hold of yourselves. All I hear is 'TAS is superior because ---' 'Fuck you regular speedruns > TAS' and it's just plain stupid.
You are right: It indeed is plain stupid for you to hear that.
That's because nobody in this thread is saying that. I haven't said that (on the contrary, I have several times commented that I'm a big fan of regular speedruns), and I can't see anyone else saying that either. There's no "war" between anybody. The only one who is seeing that is you.
Maybe you should learn to read?

I also haven't heard any of this. Could you cite some quotes where you think this feeling has been conveyed?
