Post subject: Dobutsu no Mori (N64)

I was just wondering if a TAS of Dobutsu no Mori (Animal Crossing for the JPN N64) would be possible for at least sub-2hr completion or if it would take way too long.

I thought Animal Crossing was one of those games without an end. How in the world would that work? Collect all items and whatnot?
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Well, technically, once you pay off all of your debts then the game really kinda "ends". One thing that would be interesting would be to start at like Saturday night (depending how long the run is) and then around 8:00ish in game (there is an in-game clock like the GC and DS versions) end the run with K.K. Song by Totakeke :P.

I imagine that there's 1 action that has the best payoff/time... if this TAS would consist of continuously doing that action then the result wouldn't be very interesting

Well there's also extreme luck. Our hero could simply find a lot of valuable items. This definitely would be in the tech demo section, but might be interesting. I'd have to see a WIP to judge. Maybe the demo could be building a really awesome house from random sources. If you can do so in under an hour or so, I'd be pretty impressive. The limitation to the Japanese version is probably a hinderence, but there's nothing we can do. Are there any important differences from the GCN version? EDIT: There's also the issue of the clock. To upgrade the house you gotta leave and come back the next day. And there's also the question of if it is even emulated by mupen and will work in a movie. This may still be impossible for technical reasons.

Ahh, that is very true. I think the only TAS would be to get all Golden Items. (Shovel, Axe, Net, Fishing Rod and I think that's it) But then again, you can pay off all your debts, but then the house would just immediatlly go up to max size.

collecting all of the golden items seems like a vague/bad goal. what is the point of having all the gold items, aside from saying "I have all the gold items"? a never-ending game is like the never-ending story... it does not end. Thus, making goals to successfully end the game would be difficult, if not impossible.

Also, for paying off your house, you will have time time travel. (If this anything like the Gamecube one) So you would have to start X days before Saturday, and move it up each time. I don't think this would work as a TAS, unless you went from some other goal. Meh

Yeah, the game seems almost impossible to TAS unless some super-glitch is found or something, like to move ahead time or get bells super-quickly. Or both.

There is that Dupication glitch you can do in your house. You can get a lot of money that way. If someone was to tas using that exploit.
