Someone has made a list that doesn't care if the video is a TAS or unassisted (entertainment-wise) and put it on his site. http://www.thunderboltgames.com/features/article/the-top-10-most-entertaining-speedruns-feature-for-all.html I hope this doesn't turn into "my top 10 list" discussion, but more into the "how useful is this" aspect.

Where's Half-Life 2? Where's Metroid Prime multi-segment any%? Hell, where's that Viewtiful Joe kids run? That was awesome!

Actually, I dig the idea, and have resorted to the same kind of lumping-all-together ideology previously when showing speedruns and other forms of superplays to the others. The biggest problem with this trying to rate their entertainment in the same league is incompatibility of appraising criteria, but it gets remedied when unassisted play is [near-]flawless or otherwise close to looking tool-assisted.

If you didn't notice, that wasn't even ten games. I have NO plans to do a top 10 speedruns list - perhaps one of top 10 TRICKS in a speedrun, but in video form and in a separate thread.

That's not the point. FODA's initial question as I see it is whether it makes sense to judge TASes and unassisted runs equally from entertainment standpoint, not how bad a game choice the article exhibits.

I actually enjoyed the unassisted speedrun of Goldeneye more :P Also, I'm a bit disapointed that the Sonic 2 speedrun wasn't included.

Is it a good idea to group TASes and non-TASes together? meh, yeah I guess. I don't think it's an important distinction so yes it probably makes sense to me. Is it a good idea to make and publish lists of your favorite speedruns and publish it on your website? No, it's a stupid idea and no one but your friends care.

What if you make this list for yourself and your friends, though? :P

I was actually close to including a disclaimer about this. If that's your intent, good for you. It's when you believe your list has some kind of value in its own to people in general you're stupid. Edit: Please note that this is my opinion and I'm not trying to pass it off as fact.

Insert "Speedruns are to show talent, TASes are to entertain" arguement here: EDIT: For anyone who doesn't quite get my form of internet sarcasm/facetiousness, I was referring to this thread, and pictured a lot of the same discussion occurring here. Glad to see that I've been wrong (so far).

Like, so, speedruns are to totally display like, wicked radical totally tubular talent, of like, dudes that play video games... and so, like... TASes are totally cheating... Wait, I think I did that wrong.

I liked that article. All in the name of entertainment. On the goal to entertainment, TAS and non-TAS are on the same line. ↑ my opinion. Different means, but still. And it's not just because some games haven't been TASed yet. It's just that proponents of non-TASed speedruns have got something right: the chance of human error introduces some entertainment that is absent in a TAS. When something goofy happens in a TAS, you know that it happened because the author wanted it to happen. A TAS must bring the entertainment with other means; by challenging the unlikely and with creative idle actions.
