While AKA's grammar was poor, an administrator of any forum should be above the childish act of making a public mockery of anyone. AKA stated it best, if Bisqwit's true intention was to make the forum more readable, he would have silently fixed the post, and not made it such a public issue. Additionally, we have numerous Chinese posters whose submission/author text is an abomination to read. I often am left scratching my head at the tricks and glitches used... yet those important parts of a video go completely uncorrected, to the detriment of this site. On the other hand, Bisqwit took the time to make the image in question, for a single meaningless post in the workbench. I'm saddened by the immature behavior.

I guess posting some kind of image of the corrected post has to be more fun than correcting it silently. I wouldn't call it immature just because it's more fun though. It's more immature to make a big fuss out of it.

I agree. Bisqwit should not be allowed to have fun on his own website while working on his hobby.

Hm. But Bisqwit said his purpose was tongue-in-cheek. A joke. Note the green helmet. But as RT-55J has already established, jokes are not allowed. So yeah, it shouldn't have been such a public issue.

DMG applies to more than just GBx games (hello other Dot Matrix Game cartiges!). Therefore, if someone were to assert that the term DMG should be used to connote GB/SGB/GBC/etc, then the category would have to be broadened to include Game Gear and other DMG style carts. Since that is not the case on this site, as we don't have a proper emulator for the other types of DMG ROMs, the section should stay labeled as GBx, since it only contains GBx and not DMG libraries. Hitler tried to establish that DMG was the proper way to go, and look what happened to him! Also, Hitler didn't drink and avoided red meat. Just sayin'...

Also, carries out a lesson much more noticeable to the poster. Usually people tend to not notice moderator/admin edits applied to their own posts -- I'd imagine it being much more likely being ignored if the post's meaning doesn't even change. Sure, would have provided useful public service, but as the lesson goes for teaching a man to fish... You can't just give him fish, or you will have to do that all the time.

Not at the expense of his users. I just find it inappropriate behavior for an admin or moderator. Anyone else, I wouldn't care at all. Power, responsibility, maturity, and etc.

I'd rather an administrator have a sense of humor than be a bland justice-dispensing robot zombie. People are human, and I expect them to behave as humans do. When they fail to do this, I feel uneasy. Also, the average level of writing ability in this community is commendable, and has restored some faith in me that English will not one day degrade into considering such delinquent conjugations as 'Imma' and 'should of' as proper and acceptable. But I digress. You are all adorable. Some of you may even be unique and beautiful snowflakes.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here: 1) Bisqwit has no responsibility to TASvideos. He made it, it is his to do with as he pleases. The fact that others happen to enjoy the fruits of his effort does not create an obligation to them on his part. Though if it were any other moderator besides Bisqwit, this point would have some validity... If you were correct about point 2 --
DarkKobold wrote:

2) The purpose was not to make a public mockery of AKA, it was to notify him of problematic behavior while being lighthearted and fun about it. It really is a problem when important members do not put the effort into making their communication comprehensible. It is especially important on a forum like this, where many people are not fluent in English, for those who are fluent to state themselves in an understandable fashion. Because while people like you and me can easily navigate around the numerous small errors that tend to be present in AKA's posts, think about how much harder it must make it for people like xipo and x2poet, who still have very little experience with the language. PS: I did edit darkkobold's quote slightly, but only to shorten it, not to change the meaning. pps: yes I am taking this topic too seriously, but only because darkkobold should be smarter than that.

It never ceases to amaze me why, when someone gets his grammatical mistakes corrected, instead of being grateful he instead gets offended. This seems to be an universal phenomenon, appearing in most cultures (at least western ones). This has led to the situation where the de-facto standard is that pointing out grammatical mistakes is considered "impolite", and being corrected is acceptable grounds for getting deeply offended and ignoring the corrections. I find this extremely detrimental. People are too afraid to teach each other how to write properly, even if they would be extremely competent in the field, and people are too arrogant to learn from their mistakes when they are pointed out. I have personally suffered from this stupid phenomenon. In the past there have been at least a dozen words, idioms or expressions which I have used in the wrong way *for years* before someone finally pointed them out to me (before that people were simply too "polite" to point them out). I honestly didn't know I was making mistakes until someone told me. I have always been grateful to people who have pointed out my mistakes, and I have learned from them. That has really helped me in learning to write English properly. What exasperates me the most is that because of this stupid policy of "you have to be polite, you must not point out other people's grammatical mistakes" I have sometimes been writing things incorrectly for years. And there still probably are tons of things which I could write better (and even outright mistakes), but people simply are "too polite" to point them out. As Bisqwit said, the errors I'm talking about are not of the type "should a question mark be written inside the quotation marks or after them", but, as a real example (which I used for years before someone corrected me), using a word like "piratism" instead of the proper word "piracy".

I try to keep friends around who are spelling/grammar nazis for this express purpose. Nobody is perfect, but if we help eachother, we do move ever closer to the ideal. And as an aside, 'a universal phenomenon' would be the proper expression, due to pronunciation. We certainly do have a goofy language...

Some people regard it as the corrector questioning their intelligence. The "correctee" may also understand it as if the corrector has focused on the faults in the language rather than the message. Person 1: "We need a documant on wile-life perservation." Person 2: "No, see, it's 'document', 'wildlife' and 'preservation'." Person 1: "Just listen to what I have to say!" Also, I think that criticizing AKA's language is a bit below the belt. It's not like AKA is being unintelligible for fun, he's just not as good in English as some others here. So stop making fun of his language.

I proofread everything I write on this forum before I post it. I correct spellings, reword sentences and occasionally delete parts altogether that I find redundant. This takes around 10-60 seconds, which is generally around 10% of the time it takes to post. I am a native English speaker. I value the ability for people to understand me (because gibberish on forums never did anyone any good). What's so hard about the above? I like short sentences.

This thread reminds me of English(the word English in Swedish is engelska which doesn't use an E) class when you got your homework back. I always ended up with a huge amount of grammar errors.

I don't bother to proofread after the fact. If I catch a typo, hey, great, but if I end up missing one or making some other error, I don't bother to fix it. Usually. Going back over your post takes vital internet-time, after all.

I give everything a quick look over before I hit the 'submit' button, and then read it again after posting. Somehow, I usually tend to miss something before submitting, and will have to go back and edit regardless. It's frustrating and fascinating at the same time.

Overall, I look for the little red squiggly line for spelling. If I can't trial and error the correct spelling, I say screw it and put a (sp?) after the word. Grammar, well, I write all my thoughts out as unintelligible as possible, and then try to piece it together to form one big, coherent thought. Although sometimes failing, I find it the easiest way for me to edit.

I see your point: Bisqwit's site, Bisqwit's playground. Thats great and all for Bisqwit, but bad for the 'TASVideos community' in the long run. As an aside, I do not think Bisqwit ever even expected or wanted a 'community' in the first place. However, there is a community, and by being the final authority on who gets banned, what gets published, and etc, it is best for everyone if he stays neutral and mature, regardless of the situation. Additionally, this attitude gives the 'me too' part of the community the validation to escalate harassment of the individual. However, this is me placing my values system where Bisqwit's is. This may not be true for him. And I should hope that you wouldn't consider a difference in opinion on 'community management' a reflection on intelligence. If you mean that I'm not seeing the 'humor' of this thread, I don't find it funny at all when someone in a position of power belittles someone below them.

Hmm... Jeah you're right... But just to justify me... I only had english until the 10th grad in Realschule. (afaik this is something like Middle School oO) And... there you only learn the basics up until some advanced grammer... All i know was thaught by myself. By playing games or watch animes... The problem is... After school i went on to make an apprenticeship. Since then (middle/end 2006) i didn't had any englisch lessons... And i don't know how to get better without a way to lern it... (maybe this sounds like an excuse... But it's really true xD) I just can hope you can understand me well. I try to write as good as i can... But sometimes i just don't know some specific words and try to describe them then in a circumstantial way... And... I use some help like the programm QuickDic. (i just found circumstantial with it xDD) so far~

A good solution is to carefully read a good amount of well-written English text. Proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and all that stuff will be more or less carved into your long-term memory that way. Books will suffice, internet most likely won't.

Google is also a great tool for learning English. If you're not sure whether certain expressions exist you can always just google for them and see the results. You can also try different variations and see which is most common. Just don't forget the initial quotes. This shouldn't totally replace the use of online dictionaries though.
