One of those old-school abandonware games from MECC. This was mostly seen on Macintosh and other Apple computers. Most schools, academies, and universities throughout the USA had Macs that contained this game in every hard drive. Not all were networked to the Internet, however. You're on a journey from Independence, Missouri to Willamette Valley in Oregon. The hardest level on the Mac version is the occupation as a Teacher. I'll post a video explaining more about this game as soon as I get through uploading it; be patient. Oregon Trail previews are already on YouTube, you have to search, though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH5shn4H0ZA The above link to part 1 of a quick run of Oregon Trail as a Teacher. My time was about 16:30, but YouTube limited me, so this is the first 8 minutes of it. The other is still uploading as fast as possible. - Uses no tool-assists - Plays at hardest level - Genre: Strategy - Genre: Adventure - Mac OS version: 7.5.2 - System ROM: Quadra 650 - Emulator: Basilisk II This starts with what I call a "move-and-hunt" strategy. It's begins with the wagon moving on one day while hunting the day after. One goal is to keep up with the remaining pounds of food for the whole game, so this strategy of mine works quite well, I must say. And of course to be prepared for unexpected turning points in the game ranging from loss of goods to drowning members of your party. Food is my main source of the game, where I can keep the party fed and to exchange for extra money if needed. Moving and hunting back-and-forth alternates until I reach Fort Boise. From there, I can finish the journey with little to no problem. If Basilisk II did have tool-assists, I might cut my own time in half!

I'm afraid this is to show that there can be Mac games worth speedrunning through. But there is no Mac emulator with re-recordings, so it's a shame. And I updated the link, so it works now.

No, Oregon Trail is not worth speed-running. I loved this game to death as a kid (and I still do love it,) but this game is slow as molasses and nothing can speed it up. Sure, you could manipulate luck, or see how many people can die of dysentary (sp), but it is a real time game that would be interesting only to the player. A TAS would be long, dull and pointless. I will change my mind if you can tell me 3 things that a TAS could do that a real person could not do in real time. Luck manipulation excluded.

My only instinct would be hunting. Most elks, buffalos, and bears weigh within 200 pounds or higher. The key would be to shoot the animal immediately after it appears from the side. As the game said, the hunter is capped at 200 pounds for each hunt. As soon as the 200+ pound animal is shot, immediately stop hunting. Maybe you're right about the game being slow. I doubt that this will work, but the management password (default) is "boom". I didn't find this out until I was in high school. Time Options (under Management) allowed me to change the simulation speed to Fast and the hunt time to as long as 2 minutes. Even at that rate, it may not seem like a good game to beat in fastest time. I rest my case =)

You should speedrun the Oregon Trail in real life. I mean, all you need is to be a Banker and have 1600 dollars. Go to your local trade post, and barter for some oxen. Oh yeah, ford Niagra falls.

The hunting seemed excessive. Did you really need your dudes riding around with 800lbs of week-old animal carcass?

That makes sense. My next concern would to be a banker and just get fresh food from forts.

Ah yes, my elementary and middle schools were equipped with horribly-outdated Apple ][e and ][gs computers. The MECC games were a staple of in-class recreation. Although Oregon Trail wouldn't make the best speedrun, Number Munchers might be fun to watch, assuming you crank up the math level to as high as it can go.

There are some Mac games that would be great for TASing - Nanosaur and Bugdom come to mind - but I don't think Oregon Trail is one.

A great game to TAS (or just play) is Darwin's Dilemma...only for Mac, and I could never get those damn Mac emulators to work.

There is better strategy to win orgeon trail quickly too. Dont buy any spare wagon parts (50% shot your run will be ruined by this, but a few trials should lead to a good run), buy maximum oxen (only if you play as one of the higher income jobs, otherwise you have to economize), and buy food rather then hunting. Avoid hunting as much as possible as it costs you 1 day of time whenever you do it. Also, if you aim to minimize time, bring fewer people and set food to minimum. A few dead kids are almost guaranteed, but at least you can make it to oregon.

Personally I would prefer to see "X has died of dysentery" rather than hunger. Agreed with 20 oxen, but you should also buy a gun and some ammo... iirc there is a higher chance of the random bandit encounters if you have A) Max ammo B) No ammo/gun So, perhaps a pistol and ~50-100 ammo should suffice

Isn't this area for tas/speedruns of things that are not accepted by this site? Which makes this the proper place? Even if not 100% exciting?
Sage advice from a friend of Jim: So put your tinfoil hat back in the closet, open your eyes to the truth, and realize that the government is in fact causing austismal cancer with it's 9/11 fluoride vaccinations of your water supply.

Lolcats are old now. Celebrity Jeopardy quotes, however, are now classified as retro: Sean Connery: Well, you were wrong, you mountebank. I pose a conundrum to ya, I riddle if you will Alex Trebek: I don't want to hear it. Sean Connery: What's the difference between you and a mallard with a cold? One's a sick duck and I can't remember how it ends, but your mother's a whore.

I would goatse or tubgirl you for that, but this is a family show. Also, it's awesome turning random nouns into verbs.
