We started the run with about 1.8 seconds of improvement in mind (A route change at the end of BitFS and a trick at the first elevator in BitS) and we managed to save well over 3 more seconds in the process.

Stage by stage

Before the castle

This was already optimal in the previous run, so the only thing changed here was the camera view.

Inside the castle

First, BLJ'ing on a higher step allowed Mario to start BLJ'ing earlier, because of less air time. This saved 2 frames. Two frames were also saved from optimisation at the BLJ, and 6 more by using a normal jump to glitch through the trapdoor. So overall, 10 frames were saved over the previous run in this section.

Bowser in the Dark World

No frames were saved at the BLJ or BLJ controlling, because it was already optimal in the previous run. At the end of the course, we found out that it was possible to clip the pipe, which saved one frame.
As for the battle, it was already optimal in the previous run.

From BitDW to BitFS

At the BLJ down to the basement, we did three jumps like the previous run, but we did two jumps close together, reducing the delay before Mario can be controlled again, and we did less turning frames. 5 frames were saved at this BLJ.
The DDD skip is 2 frames faster than the one in the previous run, because we managed to do one less BLJ, while still attaining close speeds.
7 frames were saved in this section.

Bowser in the Fire Sea

At the first tier, 3 frames were saved by using a new strat, using a series of dives with three grinds.
At the second tier, 4 frames were saved from different move combinations.
At the third tier, 72 frames were saved by using completely new strats.
At the battle, 1 frame was saved thanks to our positioning while swinging Bowser.
Overall, 80 frames were saved.

From BitFS to BitS

In the lobby, 1 frame was saved by using a base angle that allowed the second dive on the stairs to go further. The seemingly bad starting angle is intended.
In the room with the spiral stairs, 1 frame was saved by using a slide kick to the door instead of the traditional long jump.
In the gallery, one frame was saved by using a jump roll instead of a long jump to the stairs, and 2 more were saved at the long jumps up to the 70 star door. The air time after one of the BLJ's at the 50 star stairs wastes no time, in case you're wondering.
In the endless stairs room, one frame was saved; the strained angle used for the BLJ set up entering the entrance to BitS faster.

Bowser in the Sky

The main improvement here is the trick at the first elevator. This saved quite a number of frames, and the time saved also made the positions of the elevators at the end better, which allowed us to get through them much quicker. A frame was also saved at the end, by clipping the pipe.
At the battle, we did a much better second throw. This unfortunately resulted in a worse setup for the last throw, but still saved 2 frames overall.
41 frames were saved.

Thanks to

BrianRuleZ, for helping out with the run.
Halamantariel, for showing us how to hex edit.
Comicalflop, for giving us Mario's speed address for use with MHS.
Azorae, for support from the start.
Swordless Link. His run served as a good guide for this one.

mmbossman: Accepting as an improvement to the published movie.

so why the hell shouldn't it be published?
You forgot reading comprehension:

Yet Upthorn has a full right to express his thoughts on what he has seen in the run.

If you personally don't think there's enough improvement for it to be worth watching, no one's forcing you to watch! Many people enjoy watching it for the small improvements, and it makes the viewer experience slightly better for first time viewers.
There's no sure way to know if you'll tell the difference until you watch it.

Way to beat a dead horse. A horse that's been dead for a month. Upthorn voted meh, and stated his reason. And your movie got published anyway. So quit whining about it.

I've been following the Mario 64 runs since the 16-star days, and this is easily one of the most impressive series of improvements yet. While a few people noted that the changes aren't as dramatic as those that caused the drop from 16 stars to 1 to 0, the sheer variety and cleverness of improvements in this movie hasn't been seen in a long time. Although it might not be noticed by those who haven't followed this series of speedruns closely, there are two relatively huge route changes that represent (in my opinion) the most significant overall non-lobby route changes since the drop from 16-star runs to 1-star runs. Not to be overly defensive against the handful of negative or indifferent comments, but I actually registered just to tell you guys how impressive I found the improvements made here. The speedruns of this game have become so technically intricate and precise that I'd be impressed by (and would encourage publishing) even the smallest improvements from this point on. Please keep up the good work and don't stop until the game is optimized! Also, just as an aside, I can't help but notice that SwordlessLink hasn't commented on this movie (that I've seen) or given it a rating. I know he said that he isn't interested in TASing this game any more and I'm not trying to stir anything up, but it does seem like a little bit of a snub for him to not to recognize the passing of the torch here and/or offer his own thoughts on the improvements that were made.

First of all, I hope it's as obvious to everyone else who's reading this as it was to me that your comment was meant to "stir something up." The reason I've refrained from commenting on and rating the movie is because it was made solely out of the authors' dislike for me. While they'll undoubtedly try to deny this, there are several people at this site who know our history, and can back me up on this. While they were making this run, they would regularly contact me on MSN, and brag about the "2 frame improvements" that they'd found, and go on, to no end, about how my run was suboptimal, and how I sucked as a TASer for not being able to find these. Because of this, I felt that it was for the best that I didn't comment on the movie, since, really, what else could I say to that, other than flames? If I were to vote on this run, my vote would be heavily influenced by the fact that it was made by these people, and since voting on a run based on the author is against site rules (or at least, frowned upon), I just refrained from voting altogether. Had this run been made by anyone else, I would've probably given it a yes without even really thinking about it.

It IS a rule. Some people just choose NOT to follow it. So good for you for being a trooper.

Care to post a link from the rules that specifically states this? I couldn't locate it.

I can definitely respect that, although what I would do (and this is just me) is vote on their run on here and give it a really high score, like two 9's or something, and then go to the YouTube video and rate it a 1 since nobody could track me on that because sometimes they say that success is the best revenge and that's why I would turn this around on them and make an even faster run and rub it in their faces.

It mentions it in the ratings, but when it comes to voting it's a free for all in terms of how people will vote. It's more of an etiquette thing than anything else, but not everyone is capable of following it.
