Emulator: VBA rerecording 1.7.2 v19.3
This TAS completes Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones in 1:06:49 (240536 frames). I also finished in 94 turns.
This game is the eighth in a series of Strategy RPGs. As an RPG TAS, it probably won't appeal much to people who haven't played the game, but I'm hoping that the enjoyment of those who have balances that out.
I don't really feel like writing a novel about this run (despite the fact that the levels are called chapters), so I'll just go ahead and summarize the main techniques used.

RNG abuse:

In this game, simply sitting around doing nothing has absolutely no effect on the randomness. However, the same random number generator is used for both combat and the path-drawing algorithm. This means that by forcing the game to randomly choosing between two different ways to get to the same location (e.g. by pressing a diagonal), you can alter the outcome of future combats. There is hardly a turn in this run where I don't abuse this fact at least once, so I can get luck to go my way again and again.

Characters:

For most of the game, my main fighting force is Seth, with a little backup from Vanessa. This changes partway through to become Vanessa with a little support from Seth. Saleh makes some appearances as well. By abusing the RNG as above, I can make sure that the characters I use get statups in the three offensive stats (strength, speed, and skill) nearly every levelup. There's no way a normal Vanessa could pull of some of the stunts she does on a regular basis in this run, simply because with my help, her 35% strength growth becomes 100%.

Glitches:

I only actually use one glitch in the entire game. This was to have two characters occupy the same square. This is accomplished by getting the path arrow and cursor to be on different squares when you press A--if the cursor is in a legal destination square, the character will move to wherever the arrow is pointing to, even if that's not a legal destination.
Some people who have played this game may be familiar with the control enemies glitch, which I did not use in my run. This is because I'm fairly certain that it wouldn't save time--the enemies already commit suicide even without me going through the effort of controlling them. It takes a fair amount of time to get the glitch set up, too.

Special Thanks:

I'd like to thank Nitrodon for being far far better at Fire Emblem TASing than I could ever be. I'm convinced that if he was actually doing this run instead of helping me do it, it would be considerably better. Here's hoping he goes back to his FE7 TAS some day.
I'd also like to thank everyone who ever prodded me in the topic to get going again. It didn't always work, but it at least made me feel guilty about forgetting to TAS for months on end when I came back to it.
I'll go ahead and end these comments with a quote by me from the FE8 thread:
"I just know that when this run eventually gets obseleted, the new run will be faster on every chapter, and will be able to sum it up smugly as 'better luck manipulation'."

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Oh! I also corrected the ROM name.
  • You indicated 1997 - Fire Emblem - The Sacred Stones (U)(TrashMan).gba
  • I updated it to Fire Emblem - The Sacred Stones (U).gba

And to think some of these chapters took me dozens of turns in a "real" game... Wow! Insane luck manipulation! Congratulations on this run!

I'm not very familiar with the Fire Emblem series, but I really enjoyed this TAS anyway. The planning that went into this was apparent throughout. I thought the crazy cursor-wobbling was actually quite interesting to watch, not only because of how it looks but because it became a great visual representation of the manipulation done in this TAS. Yes vote from me. Edit: Other things I liked about this TAS: -Times when you just jumped (almost) straight to the boss and got Eirika to the throne -Multiple battles in a row where the enemy missed and you got a counter-critical -When an isolated "got 5000 gold" message (or similar) showed up in the midst of your rapid screen-skipping between chapters Congratulations on finishing the run!

YAY CHEETAH! Good work, man... I am proud that your little project has finally grown into a wonderful addition to the TASvideos workbench, and, hopefully, a member of the TASvideos library. Yes vote, FUCK YEAH! Team America, anyone?

Obvious yes vote from me. I've been waiting to see a Fire Emblem TAS for a while and you've proven it's better than anything I could've ever imagined. I adore watching the insanely fast cursor movement, especially before crits, the zipping through bases, making trades we can barely see for a split second and just utterly breaking the game in the least intentioned manner (Vanessa dodging multiple arrow shots, for instance).

Nice luck manipulation. The game itself looks extremly boring, when you never played it. I watch most in fast forward. But the luck manipulations was great. Dodge and kill many enemies. So yes for so much work and fast TAS.

I hadn't followed the discussion of this run, and I don't know this game well, so I had one question. I thought I saw at the beginning of the run you set the difficulty to Normal, what were the reasons for this?

Hm, it has been a while since I have played the game, and I don't feel like loading it up. So, IIRC you can only do easy or normal, and hard mode is unlocked after you beat the game once. Even as I type that, it sounds wrong, though :P Try frame advancing through the beginning, just to double check it is on normal. As I saw, most movements in this game took under 10 frames to perform (to the naked eye, it looked like 1 frame,) so you may have not noticed the switch to hard... or it may be on normal! [/end senseless post that probably didn't make sense, and had way more text than necessary]

I just went checked it again, he only hits down once to select normal (instead of up once for difficult) and the screen fades out with the cursor over the normal setting.

Hard difficulty doesn't increase the number of enemies, just the strength. In other words, I'd spend a lot more time wiggling the cursor, but have the exact same strategies as in normal.

Congratulations on the completed TAS Cheetah, you ungrateful...er, I mean what? :P Seriously though, I just watched the rest of it (from 18 on), and it looked good. I have to wonder if you could have killed that last eyeball in 18 quicker and/or had Vanessa wait farther down in 21 though. Other than that, an obvious yes vote from me.

Heh, great run. I actually didn't think you would be able to kill the final boss with one blow, I guess manipulating strength from level ups really makes that big a difference. Yes vote :)

It made no difference at all, actually. A pierce critical when wielding Vidofnir will kill him even with 0 strength. Now, the trouble is that he has such high luck that even getting a 1% critical chance against him is hard, which is where he triangle attack came in. EDIT: whoops, that's a lie. You need at least 10 strength to pull it off.

Nice run. Good to see some Fire Emblem TASes. Also, I see NESVideoAgent made some interesting choices for screenshots.

I just realised I haven't commented on this yet. It is indeed a masterpiece in luck manipulation. You make some very interesting choices throughout the run that really makes it stand out. :) Good job!

Yup. I'd personally recommend either frame 228985 (Vanessa attacking Lyon with a slim lance and having zero damage displayed), or frame 231183 (Pierce critical on Fomortiis). I guess the penultimate picture the bot took is pretty good (wait, you mean the boss isn't down there?)

This game reminded me a lot of Stratego. Unfortunately it was somewhat boring, but it was obvious how much luck manipulation went into this, and it had a decent amount of action, so I think it deserves a "meh".

Whee, an hour of playing strategy with loaded dice. Flaws in results I see so far is Kyle not counter-killing a monster in bottom left in the chapter you pick up Dozla the berserker, and not counter-killing Caellach (I'm thinking this may not be possible?) Why doesn't Lord Eirika counter? Does it require special equipment? What does dancing do? Give the target another move? The ending roll of character epilogues was an amusing "Who the heck are these people and why are we hearing about them?" ("Ephraim who?")

Vykan: an hour long tas on youtube? if you're going to do that, be sure each segment has full explanation that it's a TAS, who made it and a link to TASvideos for more information.. Subtitles should also be strongly considered (like on the encoded run).
<adelikat> I am annoyed at my irc statements ending up in forums & sigs

1. Neither of those were possible. Kyle might have had like a 1% chance of criticalling the monster, but manipulating such a low chance combined with other stuff would have been slower than just letting it happen. As for Caellach, he's holding an item that prevents criticals. 2. I had her drop her weapons. Makes it faster, since she isn't killing anything anyways 3. Yup, that's what dancing does.

That'd be awesome. Good luck on your FE10 speedrun, by the way.
