This TAS of Hogan's Alley represents the first NES TAS recorded using zapper input.
This was recorded using FCEUX2.0 (which can be found here). FCEUX uses a .fm2 file format that is not compatible with previous FCEU versions! One advantage of this new file format is that it can capture mouse input which is needed to replay zapper input. This new ability was my motivation to make this movie.
Note, FCEUX supports the use of metadata. You can view the submission info by clicking on the "metadata" button on the play movie dialog.
  • Aims to be a Super Sharpshooter! (Achieved by simply surviving 10 rounds)
  • Aims to only get 5000 goals (or none at all)
  • Playaround

Why playaround? Why not fastest time or a score run?

  • Fastest time = minimal shooting
Each time you shoot, the game halts and checks if the shot registering. Therefore every shot costs time. A fastest time run would involve minimal shooting which would eliminated variety and tricks
  • Score Run
Shooting a can gives you points. Therefore, a score run would include the maximum amount of shots possible. This would be really tedious and reptetive (as well as seizure inducing). Again, variety and tricks would not be possible.
  • Play-around
That leaves the only logical choice to be a play around. I try to do a bit of mixing of the 1st two plus show off as many aspects of the game. Such as hard to make shots, inhuman accuracy and speed, glitches (shooting cans through walls), and incredible timing.

Summary

  • Emulator Used: FCEUX
  • Playaround
  • Abuses programming errors in the game
  • Genre: Shoot em Up

Truncated: Rejected due to poor viewer feedback. It's nice to see that the zapper works, but there are probably few zapper games that will be interesting. Most of them rely on reflexes and aim, and both of those are easily perfect when tasing.
FractalFusion: Re-rejecting because it does not aim for fastest time.

You probably chose the best goals for this run, and to made the TAS of this game as entertaining as it gets. Unfortunately, it still wasn't entertaining at all. I'll vote no.

Sorry, I didn't like the show. Repetitive and boring. Fun that you choose a zapper game though. :) How about gumshoe? =)

Adventures of Bayou Billy allowed players to use Zappers in their shoot-em-up games, is that better or worst than Hogan's Alley?!
