Alden, I'm really interested by you're TA Painting. I'm a visual artist for 8 bit music watch my work here (http://www.dailymotion.com/RealMyope/video/x5nddo_live-de-dr-von-pnok-visuel-vj-realm_creation) I would like to know if you think it's possible to take a picture with a camera (during a show or something) and them with you're system to TA paint it in real time , even if I have to speed up the emulator.

stickyman05 was kind enough to encode a drawing for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLVpMIhWD5Y It's sped up about 30 times :)

That was pretty interesting. About how long does it take (on average) to make one picture?

Cool tool-assisted paintings, alden! Slightly off-topic: I wonder if there's enough screenshots available at TASVideos for generating a good looking mosaic.
I tried making some mosaics with all non-obsoleted publication screenshots. While the tile-set is lacking some bright colors, the result is not too bad I guess. Here are some (about 4 MB each): Mario Flying Mario Bowser Yoshi Luigi
I like the Luigi one. Also, what's wrong with including obsoleted movies?

More specifically, I used Frame skip (set to 9) and ran the emulator at ~400% speed. Used CAM studio (Windows), and have no idea why there is no sound >_>;

not sure how you extracted all the files Gunty, but several 'categories' are possible :P all non-obsoleted publications all publications all submissions all gfx-material (icons on the forum, etc) im sure others are possible as well (even some that would make sense in a reasonable way)

There were really no thoughts behind only using the currently published movies :P. I happened to use these because the easiest way to get a bunch of screenshots was saving the published movie pages. If there is an easy way to get the obsoleted movie or perhaps even NesVideoAgent's preview screenshots, I'd love to know so I can include them. I also implemented the improved tiling accuracy DaTeL237 suggested, and the results do look better. I forgot to upload the mosaics and I cannot access them at this time, but I'll try to upload them in a few days.

I still think the Naruto image would have been more impressive.

That's cool. But... I understand that you want to show that it's done in an emulator, but is it really necessary to capture the emulator window borders too, rather than just the contents? Capturing just the contents would allow the image to be larger and clearer.

Jeeze, is anything ever acceptable? Simple: I don't know how. In depth: Encoding an AVI using the emulator does not work, because it will only skip every 9th frame. The Gangsta movie would run for ~52 minutes this way. I needed the 400% emulator speed. Finally, I have no idea how to speed up AVIs, so I began using screen capture software. Sadly, FRAPS blows my mind EVERY time I try to use it, so I sought alternatives. The alternative I found was CAM Studio, which has an option to record a window, and which is the option I used. As seen with my cheetah men and Sonic GG encodes, I don't care at all about "being on emulator," but I do the best I can. While on the topic, the reason there is no sound is because CAM Studio does not support recording directly from the source of what is being recorded. (Edit later, unclear writing) The only alternative is to "Record from Microphone," which says I don't have a microphone to use.

Sticky: You should try getting that first one to play to the tune of I'm a Gangster.

Off topic: Here are the mosaics of the same pictures I posted earlier, using (almost) all pictures from the TASSnapshot package. Mario Flying Mario Bowser Yoshi Luigi EDIT: Moved images.

A quality bunch. I specially like the Bowser, Mario (brawl) and luigi pics - perhaps because their simplicity lends themselves to a cooler-looking mosaic? I think that having so many identical tiles next to each other kinda detracts somewhat, though. I assume these are algorithmically generated, from something you coded? It's mega-impressive but maybe if you could have it so the same tile never occurs within, say, 4 'squares' of itself, it'd result in more variance and a cooler effect?
I'm just some random guy. Don't let my words get you riled - I have my opinions but they're only mine.

I made some mario paint images today with a matlab script I wrote. (These pictures were made in matlab and not in Mario paint, but they have the same resolution and color palette as a mario paint picture, so they could be made in that game.) Here they are if you're interested:

Nice one's! I was thinking doing a short video that way^^but it might take ages. How does your programs work? Is it faster than the real Mario Paint?

Yeah, it creates a picture in about 2 seconds. Here's basically what it does: 1. Resize the image to 248*168 = the size of the Mario Paint drawing box. 2. Loop through all pixels in the image and compare its color to the 15 colors of Mario Paint. Find the color that's closest (according to a certain distance function). 3. Recolor this pixel to this color. 4. When the picture is done, paste the finished drawing on top of a game screenshot so that it looks like it was made in the game. Oh, and it seems that the white color didn't work on those images. Probably most noticable on the Mega Man X picture. With white color working: I'll try and upload some more later on.
