I've been trying to use FCEUX on Vista. I'm using the most recent version, the 2.0.4 interim build, but this has been a problem since 2.0.1, I think... I cannot seem to be able to associate .NES files with FCEUX. FCEUX refuses to appear on the "Open With" dialog, even after being selected using "Browse". After it's selected, the dialog box just closes and acts as if nothing has happened, and it doesn't appear on the "recommended programs" list either.

Then try using the Windows 95 way of associating files, under Tools > Folder Options > File Types.

Here's what you do: 1. Rename the folder used by the version of FCEU(X) that .NES files are associated with. 2. Use the "Open With" dialog again; the old version should no longer be in the list, because the relevant Registry entry now points to a nonexistent location. 3. Select the new version of FCEUX. 4. Name the old folder back if you want, and .NES files should still be associated with the new FCEUX.

Read the first post again and rethink.

Try making a .bat file with just
fceux.exe "%1"
in it. Then try running it by dropping a file on top of the .bat file. If that works, you might be able to try associating them with the .bat instead.

I did read it; I was just thinking of back when I wanted to associate .SMC files with a newer version of SNES9X and they would keep opening with the older one (which I kept around in case I wanted to watch an older TAS). If the .NES files are associated with something other than FCEU(X), replace that first step with a folder containing whatever program they are associated with...and if that doesn't work you will need to dig around in the Registry.

I fixed it. Here's what I did: 1) Renamed FCEUX.exe 2) Found a version of FCEU that didn't have this problem, dropped it in the FCEUX folder, and named it FCEUX.exe 3) Opened a rom, used Open With and formed the association with FCEUX.exe 4) Deleted FCEUX.exe and re-named the real one back. I still have no idea what caused this, it seems like a bug. Only FCEUX seems to have this problem.
