a new pcsx2 version (0.9.8) was released about a week ago. it works pretty good. people who don't like the option of having plugins will like it, but i would have liked the option to have zerogs graphics, so it would have been possible to capture avi.
AVI dumping should still exist if you allow hacks and then press F12, I am currently unable to verify this myself.

I made a movie of Forbidden Siren's beginning (first level and menus) with PCSX2-rr. Things worked out surprisingly well while making the level, no problems at all, but then the movie desynced at the menus after the level. Not such a big deal at this stage... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eMNcc4XiwQ Hope this emulator gets more development, because I'd love to work on a PS2 run or two. EDIT: looking back, there is a small desync during the second slide sequence as well. You can tell when the character's movement stops even when it shouldn't.

A pretty interesting read about pscx2 emulation and tas. <rama2> pcsx2 won't support tas anytime soon btw <delroth> rama2: what's the GS? <rama2> delroth: the Graphics Synthesizer (tm) <AngerFist> oh shit, speaking of which, WHY NOT rama? <rama2> it's a legacy custom chip with analog circuitry and it really badly leans to emulation <delroth> ah, why is it so hard to emulate compared to Wii's GPU? <@Billiard> everything else doesn't run :p <delroth> oh, ok <rama2> supports too many operations that are hard (slow) to do or that aren't possible at all <rama2> and it's fast in a ps2 <rama2> so it's a major speed hog in emulation, too <no_cluez> rama2: are there any public docs for that, like yagcd for gc? <rama2> yea, sure <rama2> ps2dev.org :) <no_cluez> ah, thx <AngerFist> rama, apparently, there is pscx2-rr. <rama2> and there's the awesome official documentation of the linux kit <rama2> which you need to buy though to get access <AngerFist> but i think its fubared. <rama2> it is <AngerFist> so cant we like start from there? <rama2> i doubt any single coder can take pcsx2 as it's now and just slap on a working TAS <no_cluez> meh, ps2dev has 503... <rama2> prove me otherwise (please) :p <rama2> ps2dev is up and down all the time <rama2> >< <rama2> http://forums.ps2dev.org/ <rama2> there's the action anyway <no_cluez> oh, ok <delroth> rama2: why couldn't that be implemented as an input plugin which reads from a file? <delroth> timing issues? <delroth> or things like that? <rama2> our savestates are complex and slow (due to the complex machine) <rama2> and not really very safe either <AngerFist> there has been a few minor brief tases of ps2 games thank to that pscx-rr, but i believe those authors tried thousands of rerecords just to tas a few mere seconds after suffering tremendous amount of desynchs. <delroth> ok <AngerFist> *have <rama2> first you'd have to fix all the issues with saving the machien state properly <rama2> some stuff isn't documented or known <rama2> like a unit called SIO, which is for pad and memcard in/output <rama2> or the sound chip <rama2> then there's the dma controller.. a huge problem even without savestates <rama2> (ps2 is a couple fast cpus and a beasty dma controller, basically :p ) <delroth> ok <rama2> the controller has several states and does smart bus arbitration <rama2> we don't even emulate that correctly <rama2> leading to a couple hangs <rama2> that's all minor, compared to the GS though

There's a whole bunch of TAS videos there. I'm just watching the GTA3 one, and it certainly looks TASy to me. I'll try to find out what was used to create this.

pcsx2-rr - It has been out for a while, but is extremely desyncy. Yes, I made up a new word.

I'd like to try that emulator, but there doesn't seem to be any download link on the page.

Any idea what revision of pcsx2 that's based off of?

A really old one, it hasn't been updated since 2010.

Doesn't really matter then. One of three things has to happen: a) An RR patch gets accepted into mainline and then kept there, where it can be continually maintained as the emulator evolves. b) The emulator reaches full maturity, so that the codebase is stable and unlikely to change, and RR can be implemented without fear. c) The RR dev invests the time to continually keep RR up to date with changes in mainline. Desmume chose a), and that worked out reasonably well. Dolphin chose a), and that's sort of kind of worked out, maybe. Quite a few of the emulators used on TASVideos are cases of b), but pcsx2 is no where near that. I don't think c) is a realistic possibility.

In my opinion there is no point in branching PCSX2 for an RR until the CPU and all other PUs are emulated at a satisfactory level. I am currently playing with the idea of writing a CPU verifier but I need to understand the info about the PUs better before I can begin planning and coding. I currently have no time to really dig myself into this.

A little apropos, but there was a 1.0 release a little under a week ago. Any interesting changes in there someone who's less boorish about emulation than I am noticed that might service RR a bit better, or is it the same old builds under a public package?

The actual emulation core has gained much in bugfixes and compatibility in the last two years, which is always a good thing.

PCSX2 1.0 works pretty good and is a LOT better than 0.9.8, however: The current design of the emulator is not deterministic enough to make it feasible to implement any kind of RR tools. Also it is still dubious if the CPU emulation is accurate enough for the TASes made on it to be "repeatable" on a real console considering that the EE-core code has not received any attention since 2010.

Ok, there seemed to be a lot of interest in a build off that Progenitor updated PCSX2-rr, so I built it: https://anonfiles.com/file/6a0e7f9a89ef363a9f75adfb36091820 A few things: 1) I have no idea if this will work 2) My DirectX SDK is a little iffy 3) I may have packed this wrong and all deps are missing 4) This build is not PGOd because I just have no idea how to do that Built with Visual Studio 2008 SP1 with DirectX SDK June 2010 targeted at Win32 platforms, not SSE/SSSE optimized.

"The connection has timed out" "The server at anonfiles.com is taking too long to respond." Could you upload somewhere else? MediaFire?

Never had that problem with AnonFiles. I don't like MediaFire as the need registering. If you have not been able to download this by tonight (12 hours from this post) I will upload it somewhere else.

The "Play Movie" and "Stop Movie" functions under the Movie menu just open the About PCSX2 screen. Also the Record Movie option opens a "RePlay" dialog box and doesn't do anything else. :(
