Following the recent upsurge in emulator development, there are some interesting news on the PS2 front as well: apparently, development teams of the two most advanced PS2 emulators have merged to form one solid program, which will assume the name PCSX2. If you check the compatibility list on their site, you'll note how many various games are already playable using the recent versions. In fact, it is not unlikely that we receive tool-enhanced PCSX2 already in 2009 if we ask nicely. (AngerFist? :D ) All in all, it seems the 2009 is going to be a floodgate opening year for tool-assisted speedrun platforms, kinds of like 2004 has been. [EDIT] So, AngerFist convinced me to create a feature request on the project's googlecode page. Which means you can go ahead and star it: http://code.google.com/p/pcsx2/issues/detail?id=16

This is so cool. There are so many games on the PS2 that deserves a TAS. Hopefully, this project will be completed within the year.

I still need to try one of the ps2 emulators out. Hopefully I can get a better fps in Ps2 games then I do in dolphin.

Multi-core processors do wonders for PCSX2. Switching from a single-core processor to a dual-core of the same clockspeed improved performance about 600-800% for me, without exaggeration. Some games have an easier time than others, however; Disgaea ran near full-speed on my old single-core, while FFX was getting about 1fps if I was lucky.

I think PCSX2 requirement is dual core, single core cant play anything, they use multi-threads so its no wonder on why it need high performances cpu You need also a decent graphic card (gf4/5/6 is not good)

It's not a requirement, per se, just a strong suggestion. Some games run fine with a single-core, while others will struggle just to bring you to a title screen before you fall asleep.

I would have written it even better had I proofread the result once more. There are a few typoes here and there, as well as a couple things that could be worded differently. But hey, thanks. :D

I'm fine either way as long as the devs get what we're asking them for. I've seen the ugliest English from people claiming to live in the US even when compared to quite some not speaking English natively. Bottom line, the Cold War is over; stop your (ironic) hatred ;)

Haha, I think you misunderstood me... I think I am a pretty good writer, and I will be damned if moozooh isn't better. No hatred, just hatredly worded... let's see a Russian come up with words as awesome as hatredly! ;3

Word! [/off subject] I think there should be a way for multi-core processors to be automatically enabled, for those who have them, if it means the game runs better. I, for one, don't know how to enable/disable processors; it may be helpful for an auto-on. ...especially for the inept ones :)

Not that easy, sadly. Multiple processors/processor cores are only beneficial for multi-tasking or performing specifically multi-threaded tasks, the latter of which is rather tricky in most applications.

Actually, they've had plenty of releases before hand. Also, PCSX2 has had the same name since it was first started. The team that merged with them was working on an unofficial fork of PCSX2.

So, how does it work? I can't check it myself, because of my really old PC. Is the new PCSX2 emulator suitable for TAS'ing? (save-state, re-recording, etc..)

It's not. The emulator is plugin based as well(With all the headaches that causes...). Also, something I forgot to reply to last time I posted: A GeForce 6 series card would be enough if it was 6600 and up, I believe. A 6800 and up being enough is all I'm sure of.

Just a heads up: from now on, if you intend to follow and download PCSX2 latest version, always follow this thread: http://forums.pcsx2.net/thread-3716.html (first post). By the way, the latest PCSX2 version was updated 3 days ago (15th of may) so its pretty fresh!

Personally, I'd like to see what adelikat could do with Gradius V or R-Type Final.

You will be waiting a long time before you see that. If we get PS2 rerecording I'll be tackling some GTA games. I expect that to take awhile.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects
