Intro
Hello everyone. This is my first full-game TAS, so I decided to try my hand at Star Fox 64. I chose this game because I really liked playing it when I was younger, and I always wondered how good you could get at this game. When I saw that there was no movie for it, I immediately thought: "I could do this!" I feel really good about this run because it shows the raw game pushed to the limits without any special glitches or cheats. I hope everyone enjoys my run and that more are made in the future.

The Game
Star Fox 64 is the supposed "remake" or sequel of the original Star Fox for the SNES. You play as Fox McCloud and basically fly around in an "Arwing" shooting down enemies. You have 3 friends who accompany you on your voyages adding their "helpful" advice such as doing a barrel roll. You encounter team Star Wolf, Star Fox's rivals and many other foes. The final boss is Andross, a giant monkey head with floating hands. When defeated, he turns into mechanical set of eyes and a brain. (Not unlike Mother Brain)
This movie was made over about a week long period. The hardest part to making this movie was probably getting all the angles and aiming perfect. Many will enjoy the results because it shows this game played to the highest degree.

mmbossman: Rejecting for the reasons outlined in the discussion thread by various posters.

Just wanted to chime in that the [f1] ROM was also the only one I could find when I was trawling ISOHunt back before they blacklisted USA IPs. Haven't watched the movie yet (just downloaded the savestate, and I'm at the library, not home), but I anticipate being underwhelmed due to the lack of "Aims for maximum score" in the movie's goals and the fact that the author has stated he only used three charge shots the whole time.

Given that I can't find the [f1] version (I just have good versions), even the save state won't work for me. Sorry, too much going against this run for me to even try looking at it anymore.

I didn't enjoy the no charge aspect. The only time it was remotely fun is area 6, but even then it can't redeem the fact that the game opens up to corneria not even getting a medal and being really boring.

But if he's aiming for "fastest time on the red line" route, then you DO NOT want to get medals, because they cost time.

Actually, his goals in the submission text don't mention speed. Goals * Hardest path * Minimum use of charged shots * Entertainment [edit] yeah, the description WAS edited after all... I don't know, this movie have some arbitrary goals... First was speed-based, now entertainment-based... The redline-path I can understand, but... Bah, I don't know.
My first language is not English, so please excuse myself if I write something wrong. I'll do my best do write as cleary as I can, so cope with me here =) (ノಥ益ಥ)ノ

Then you're not looking hard enough. I can come up with 3 different locations with ease where to get the good ROM. At least at one of them I finally found the [f1] ROM. (I'd give locations, but that's against the rules.)

Most disappointing run for the most anticipated N64 game. Sorry. Your goal choice was quite poor. Fastest time for a rail shooter is really not the best; and you don't even get the fastest time. Most of the bosses could have been improved, I think it was tested by the SDA runner that boosting without moving left, right, up, or down is fastest, and you also had the option of ending input earlier, just before shooting out of Venom, but instead used up all your bombs and shot at James McCloud. You say you go for entertainment, but the score oriented run is vastly more entertaining (as shown by meepers' and nangosan's WIPs) because they show way more explosions, and demonstrates superhuman playing that a human player could never accomplish. Your only interesting stage was Area 6, and even that could be better. You also miss a lot of enemies, which looks sloppy. For these reasons, plus the fact that you use a bad ROM and started from a savestate, makes me vote no.

so if i was to do a better run, i should go for most points, and optimize the bosses? thanks for the constructive criticism, this being my first run, i didnt expect it to be well received. well, i guess it's back to the drawing board for me. :) do any of you guys know which route is the most entertaining / has the most enemies? and just to confirm, killing multiple enemies gets you extra points, but could someone tell me how many or if it depends? thanks for commenting even though it was, ahem, a below average TAS edit: ill make sure to start from the beginning on a good dump rom next time!!! ps. should i get version 1.0 or 1.1? or does it make a difference?

Oh man, I feel sorry for BLJ (and what a cool glitch it is too). It must be tough working hard on a TAS and having it blown out of the water. Because I mainly use a Mac, I don't bother watching runs unless they've got encodes, but I think you've learnt an important lesson: always use good dumps. If your ROM doesn't come with any tag, including [!], don't risk it, and instead take the time to find one that has a [!] tag. I'll send you over a PM, as I have some stuff that could help you. I think I can answer the question you posed to comicalflop: Yes. Go for most points and optimize the bosses. I'm not sure about the most entertaining route, but I'd say that, unless 1.0 has obviously more abusable glitches or runs faster, go with 1.1. At least, that's what I reckon. I'd encourage you to keep working on it, and I imagine that with the modifications suggested, you'll have a strong run. Good luck, and thanks for the submission :). Cheers, Franklint

Your goals should be: 1: Most points (take the route that allows so.) 2: Fastest Time where it does not interfere with getting most points. 3: Most entertainment where it does not interfere with the above. I would suggest you read all the discussion in this thread: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1443 For this TAS to be accepted it will have to beat or tie all existing scores TAS and non-TAS. Like meepers said: Your Corneria segment should have at least --(EDIT: See Below)-- points, as this is currently the maximum anyone has achieved. (There is a video somewhere in that thread, most of the information for achieving such a score is also there.). If you really plan to tackle this challenge, I would suggest posting your progress in the thread linked above for review on a stage by stage basis. Being that this is a popular game, a lot of people here have put much effort into improving this run. Much information to produce a great run is present here, but a full run has not been produced. A run that does not represent all of the known tricks by the community will likely not be settled for by the community. (See: Ocarina of Time's history.) This run is probably much more difficult than you had anticipated for a first run, but any contributions you can make to a possible future run would be appreciated by the community. I'm not sure about 1.0 or 1.1, someone else can probably suggest which is better, but I'm sure one is more preferred than the other.

iirc, the most current version (aka 1.1) is preferred.

Actually, 374 isn't the current maximum. 374 is just my 337 run + 34 expert points (sorry, I thought this was an expert run) + the bomb checkpoint (+3). I only said that score because it is the current score you can get if you followed the thread. That said though, I've actually improved 2 extra points on it now. I think. I have to check my work. At the very least, I have an extra hit. :) If you are still interested in tackling this TAS, please consult comicalflop and myself if you ever need help. On the movie, no vote for a couple reasons. 1. Aforementioned "it starts from a savestate" problem. 2. It was boring as hell; definitely aim for maximum score if you intend to keep at it. 3. This may be particular to me, but very rarely did the movie play at above half-speed, whereas when I play the game in Project64 1.6, there's only slowdown in the map screen. Anyone else notice this?

Solon: Mupen64 uses more processing resources than Project64, so if you have a computer that just works with Project64 at full speed, expect slowdowns with Mupen64. Also, I don't think Mupen64 supports dual cores... but then again I don't think Project64 does either.

Meepers and I use 1.0, that's the one to go for.

Any particular reason to use 1.0 other than "that's the one to go for"? What was changed in 1.1 that makes it inferior to 1.0 for TASing?

Floppy pants doesn't think .1 is a pure number. Death to the .1s!

ok, so i actually should use 1.0? i'll probably need a lot of help with the scoring system how come sometimes you get 2 points for a single kill and some times you get only 1? and how come points accumulate far after you kill some enemies in groups?

You should be posting in the starfox 64 thread from now on, not here. And yes, use the 1.0 ROM. The scoring system is confusing, but once you know about it, it makes sense. The goal is to miss with the charged up shot. You want to hit the enemy ships with CUS explosion, not the actual shot itself. You get 1 extra hit if the ship destroyed was caught in the blast, and not with a direct hit. Also, sometimes, when the ship hits the ground and is destroyed, you get the point, but you may go too fast for that to register. Shoot the ship a second time with a normal laser if that happens. When you have groups of enemies, you want to hit all of them with one charged up shot that doesn't directly hit any of them. A CUS that hits near a group of 3 enemies, that doesn't directly hit any of them, will show +3. Watch the high score runs a lot and you'll see what I mean.

What is the difference between the 1.0 and 1.1 ROMs? Was there some useful glitch that was fixed in the more recent version or something?
