WIP1 Timing is on Fake muke desync workaround is on
This run is only meant as a demonstration. I didn't use warps or passwords or anything like that.
The goal of this run was to destroy the game's time competition levels. Originally I had just wanted to have some fun, but soon really got into it. I put a lot of work into this demonstration so I will submit it, let it's fate be decided by you guys.
My first objective is to achieve the lowest in game time, this is at the sacrifice of a few real time frames.
My second objective is then real time frames, of which I wasted as little as possible getting the desired outcome.
I also wanted this run as entertaining as possible, and this part of the game in my humble opinion is the only part that could be fun to watch.
This run is a demonstration and does not finish at the credits but simply the time finish screens.
Wario's Woods is a puzzle game from 1994, Wario has taken over the forest and it is up to Toad to defeat all of his monsters in huge tree trunks, caves and castles to save the day! It's like Yoshi's Cookie and Tetris Attack all in one game. You match the colors of monsters with the corresponding bomb, requiring two or more monsters paired with one or more bombs.
This game was actually very challenging to TAS. I worked on this for a few weeks and posted a WIP. I thought a few people might get a kick out of this so I gave it a try. It took so many re-records because the of the bomb orders and such. They are fairly set in stone, especially when playing as fast as I was, however I couldn't just go through quick to see what my next bomb would be. Some color bombs would only appear under strict frame precision in TAS and in some cases require restarts of whole levels to save the time. I also ran into some bad luck, but I won't tell you where cause I think I did alright figuring it out.
I managed to finish every level in under a minute, which I didn't think I would be able to do at all, especially Hard 5R
I won't ruin the surprise of exactly how badly I killed this game, but I will say that easy finishes top place in 5:00 or less. Normal finishes top place in 10:00 or less. Hard finishes in 15:00 or less.
The hardest level to complete was actually Hard 2R round 2. The longest one in the whole TAS because of the monsters. There just wasn't enough to organize quick chains. Makes it ironic. Just imagine if YOU had perfect luck in this game! You could finish hard mode 7 minutes faster than top place. :)
I don't expect everyone to enjoy this, but anyone who was wanting to see this, have fun. :)

mmbossman: Not knowing anything about the other categories for this game, I can say that this was probably a good choice of goals. I found it entertaining throughout most of it, and it seems like a good puzzle game to provide some future competition. Accepting for publication.

I haven't played this game and I was entertained, so I imagine that somebody who's actually played this game might really like this TAS.

I have played this game and I was entertained, so I imagine that somebody like myself who's actually played this game might really like this TAS too, also, kinda. I honestly did enjoy it. Like any good puzzle game, this game has tricks and sequences you can set up in advance, and it looks like you took good advantage of it. I freaked out a little bit when I saw you carrying diamonds around, but then I realized this isn't the NES version :p Mashing Pause for luck manipulation got old fast, but there's not much you can do about it. And the audio doesn't suffer any more for it, because SNES9X seems to screw it up anyway (it's one of those few games with non-standard, un-dumpable SPC routines). It's too bad the game doesn't throw more freak enemies at you, like the Dovos (color changers), even if you do weasel your way out of a confrontation using diamonds. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd pick Hard 2 / 3. Yes vote. I wish Nintendo would whore this out as often as they do with Dr. Mario or Tetris Attack / Puzzle League.

I've only played the NES version of this but after watching it it was entertaining to say the least. Though it got kind of dull after the first few minutes. The luck manipulation was pretty cool. I'm gonna go with a yes.

I also only played the NES version, thanks to the first Animal Crossing game's birthday presents. Yeah, it started to get old, but that's what doing the rounds from easy to difficult was for. Loved the moments when you'd be waiting for something to drop to keep the combo going, so you'd idly kick a monster in the head a couple times, haha. This was a good run for some puzzle TAS fun. I liked it. Also, is the sound effect for popping a diamond supposed to sound like Daffy Duck? HOOHOO! HOOHOO!

There's a lot of David Letterman and Joey Lawrence in there, too, Twisted Eye.

I think the goal choice is probably the most entertaining, timely, and measurable. I was impressed by the creativity in setting up many of the solutions, and the pausing really wasn't that annoying. Unless someone has a better suggestion for a good category for this run, I think this should be published. Yes vote. EDIT: Also yes the sound seems just a bit off from what I recall.

Anyone else have sound emulation problems with SNES9X in this game? Anyways, I was getting excited to see if you could beat the last stage in under a minute. Excellent run.

Wow, thanks everyone. I didn't expect anyone to like it all that much. I know previous attempts at this game have been squashed or rejected. :)

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a Vs. CPU run on the hardest difficulty (where you hold L+Select+something on the select screen), but I can imagine it would be nothing chain reactions filling the CPU's field and would probably get VERY old after the 12th or 13th opponent. Kles, Kirkq, aside from the fact that SNES9X has shitty audio to begin with, Wario's Woods has some very odd audio implementation all on its own. Probably has something to do with the high amount of and quick manipulation of vocal samples. It's one of the few SNES games where you can't dump a standard SPC song file from your emulator of choice.

Yeah, the Vs CPU would get repetetive. I think a few people would like it, including me. I'd love the 100 round to be done too. But I'm weird like that.

Very nice. I've actually wanted to see someone do a TAS of this game and you pulled it off really well.

Is that horrible speed oscillation on the music in the encode how it's emulated? I know that's not how the game pak sounds.

Yeah, SNES9X's bad emulation. It sounds perfectly fine in bsnes.

Having put hours of play into the time trial mode in this game, I found this extremely entertaining. The chain diamond reactions were impressive. Even knowing the game so well, at certain points I found myself wondering what you were trying to set up, only to have it cleared up in a second or two. As for possible TASing of other modes. I think the round game would be enjoyable to a certain point, but I doubt it could stay enjoyable after 100 rounds to even someone who loves the game (which I do). And for vs Com, it would just be setting up chains to make the cpu die instead of clearing the level. Also, I'm not sure about this, but I thought you could only play the hard mode of vs com once you beat the easy mode. I might have just never tried though.
