About the game

This is Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS, it seems to be part remake of the first Contra and part new game. Anyway it's the same ol' Contra concept of a lone hero saving the world bare chested from Aliens by running to the right, sometimes jumping upward, sometimes even going forward in 3D(!) and shooting a lot. Also, once, he jumps around on a speeding rocket. It has all the ingredients of a great game, and great it is.

Details

  • Emulator used: DeSmuME 0.9.2-rr
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Uses death as a shortcut/Takes damage to save time
  • Plays at hardest level
  • Might manipulate luck... I don't remmeber

About the run

This run was started as a solo project by me (cpadolf) exactly two months ago, and since then zggzdydp has joined in as well (and all the completed stages where remade). It clocks in at just over 22.5 minutes, which is pretty good as my goal was to get under 25 minutes.
Choice of weapons: In stage 1 double M and S is picked up, F and S would have been a bit faster, but too much time has to be sacrificed in order to get double F for it to work out. In stage 2 we go for double M and double C, which we keep all the way until the last stage. The reason for this is that C+M is by far the best weapon combo in the 3D stages, and even though exchanging M for F would likely speed up stage 4, 5 and 7, the losses in stage 6, 8 and the time lost grabbing double F (as at least one would have to be grabbed out of the way in order to have it for stage 4) would be a lot bigger in the end. For stage 9 though, we get double F to deal with the final boss, as it is the best weapon there (note that the mini boss at the start of stage 9 can't be speed up, as no matter how fast you kill him he will run out of frame once then come back and die at a fixed time). Also note that single C is as strong as double C, the only difference is how long it reaches.
Tricks: There isn't much out of the ordinary here. Sometimes death is abused to cross over big gaps without having to use the grapple hook, and at some places you can do a small zip forward by dying at the right spot (in a gap between to platforms/railings, if you are far enough ahead you will be transported to the next platform/railing instead of going back). And in the climbing parts of the game you can climb faster by jumping just as you walk of a platform, there is one frame where you will jump from slightly under the platform and thus land on the next platform faster (since you don't have too fall down as far again), this usually saves 1-3 frames per use.
Something something. I don't know what to write. Ask if you have any questions.
Thanks to: Atma, for pointing out the railcar shortcut in stage 1 and Satoryu for pointing out a shortcut in stage 4.

What are the exact damage values/dps values for M/C/F

M = 24 dps (1 damage per projectile, 12 pairs shot per second) F = 6-30 dps (the uppgraded flame shot consists of 5 projectiles, when all projectiles land it does 30, and when only one land, like in the 3D levels it does 6). For C there isn't a definite answer. For most enemies it does a maximum of 5 damage per shot, but sometimes only do 3 or 4. 5 per projectile giving a dps rate of 25, but the weaker shots dropping it down a bit. For some enemies it does a lot more damage, the boss in stage 3 for example takes double damage from it, which makes it far superior to any other weapon there. The mini boss on the rocket also takes extra damage from it, but not nearly as much. Some bosses always take 5 damage per projectile (stage 6 and 8). And then there is splash damage (taken advantage of on the boss of stage 4). So I really can't give any specific number on that.

Thanks very much, Sir VG, for the encode. I finally got around to watching this. I actually liked the lack of separation between the two screens at times, when bosses or buildings would stretch between the two. Also, the lack of separation made it clearer when the player was climbing ropes faster than the screen was scrolling. I actually really liked watching this game. The graphics are great... I might even like them better than Contra Shattered Soldier for the PS2. The music also made this enjoyable, and the death abuse was funny. The TAS still makes the game look difficult, which I appreciate. Nice job guys, and yes vote.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. When will they fix the DS emulator so that there is a space between the 2 screens? I don't even want to imagine seeing Yoshi's Island 2 without it.
There's an option to do that already. View -> Screen Separation
Does this work for encoding? I've never used a DS emulator, but EVERY video I have seen of one has no split between the screens.

I haven't tried it with encoding yet. I'll give it a try later, if somebody hasn't already tried it themselves.

<Derakon> Man, I'm so glad the Contra series got started before developers decided they had to be able to justify things. <Derakon> Why's he riding a missile? Who cares! <Derakon> Oops, now a giant robotic ape has leapt onto the missile and is fighting him for it! <Derakon> The robot anglerfish are a nice touch too. <Derakon> ...was that a dog wearing a green beret? <Derakon> This alien a) is mostly hollow, b) has the longest spine known to man, c) has eyes on the inside of his mouth, that have alien snakes inside them. <Derakon> From the Contra 4 ending text: "Whatever the truth [behind the alien attacks] may have been, it was lost to time as the invaders became a mere footnote in the pages of history. A footnote which read: ''they sure blew up good.''"

The emulator doesn't record the video split even if it's turned on in the emulator settings, so whoever does do the encode will have to do the 64px split manually.

Excellent work on a great game. Also, the soundtrack in this game kicks ass (including the ending credits).

This movie rocked my face off. For publication this movie MUST be encoded with a 64 pixel gap. I like the idea of the TASVideos logo and/or the author info going in that gap. If a skilled encoder can manually put it in, great. If a coder can alter desmume 9.2+ to support that feature in AVI capture, even better.

I tried doing an AVI encode, but for some reason the video desynced when I tried recording (died at the boss at the end of stage 4). I might try again a little later, if I had a full-quality AVI, adding a 64-pixel split would be dead easy. EDIT: Looks like it's already under way. I'll hold off.

I could pass you my initial encode, but I'm sure doing a 6-7GB file (well, a 4 part file divided in 2GB chunks) would take a while. But if that's what it takes, then that's what it takes. Let me know if you want to go that route.

Do you really think the description is appropriate? Shouldn't this be a family-friendly site?

I hope further DS runs don't have this logo inbetween of the screens. I watched the Youtube version, because it's unbearable imo. I hope it doesn't sound too cocky from a user with 1 post. ;) The run was great and I look forward to more DS runs.

I especially like it because that's how it showed up on the RSS feed even after the text is changed. :D

I did like the bar a lot better than no bar. I couldn't stand thinking constantly, "huh? Where did the character go?". Now I know he was hiding behind the TASVideos logo.
