ABOUT THE GAME
Platoon was released on 1988, and it is based on the Award-Winning 1986 movie of the same name, wich by the way, i have never seen.
GAME PLOT
The game basically follows some scenes of the movie on each level, you are trapped on vietnam and your so called mates are about to send a nice quantity of napalm quite close to your location, unless you can tell them to hold their horses just a little bit more. In fact the game is quite short if you know where to go, but if you try to play it by instinct... well, prepare your liver to begin a massive bile production.
ABOUT THE RUN I decided to make it because i wanted to see it and couldn't find any, it took me one whole day to make it, if that's too little time to do a TAS, well i guess gruefood will keep it for another fool that happens to be looking for it :).
I tried my best at all times to save as much frames as posible, i couldn´t find any "speed-glitches" , so i just kept moving as fast as i could.
LEVELS
1: JUNGLE/VILLAGE
DESCRIPTION:This level is basically a jungle maze filled with exploding white lines and Vietnamese enemies that appear randomly, you need to grab some explosives in order to blow a bridge. Once you have blown the above mentioned bridge, you have to find a map and a torch inside a village in order to reach the next level.
ENEMIES: Soldiers on foot, soldiers buried in the ground (?????) and death lines (yeah, like the ones at the office)
MOVEMENT: I tried my best to make it interesting to watch, but there's not much i could do that wouldn't cost time.
2: SEWERS
DESCRIPTION: First person view is used, and as usual on an 8 bit game, is kind of weird looking. This was in fact the easiest part to record, just grab those flares, take that compass kill one or two enemies and go straight to the exit.
ENEMIES: Gun soldiers and Knife soldiers
MOVEMENT: Fast paced, it takes some time to turn around and the cross hair bounces from left to right until you encounter an enemy.
LEVEL 3 NIGHT ASSAULT
One of the slowest parts of the game, just kill anything that moves and you'll be fine.
ENEMIES: Soldiers in the dark
MOVEMENT: You move the crosshair from one shadow to another, that's it.
LEVEL 4 FINAL SHOWDOWN
This was meant to be a maze but as you will see, there is no such thing, you go always straight forward killing enemies and avoiding any objects on your way, from my perspective, this is the most dynamic part of the movie.
ENEMIES: Soldiers, snipers and the final Boss!
MOVEMENT: every bullet follows the shortest path to reach you once it has spawned, in order to avoid them you need to move the character from one side to another to make the bullets go the opposite way, enemies move from left to right, just like ducks on a fair. The last boss requires 5 grenades to die, i stop the movie as soon as i drop the last grenade.
THANKS TO
Joe Smoke, Anthony Knight and Dammit9x for writing walkthroughs and ripping maps. You for watching.

mmbossman: People don't seem to find this game to be good TASing material. Rejecting as such.

The Checksum seems to indicate this was played on the PRG1 rom. Every screen in the woods looks the same. All the monsters in the woods are the same. Everywhere in the tunnels looks the same. (At least they gave you a map.) The shootout apparently they decided to vary and make some enemies take two hits instead of one while you're staring at blackness. For the last minute I thought I was going to be mildly entertained, but then every screen and enemy was the same. Sorry this game is pretty terrible. No.

Ditto, I'm also voting No, it's pretty boring too.

I went ahead and voted Meh... For people who grew up with the NES, and every game that came out was a "big deal" since you tracked them every month - you should remember Platoon. I've rented this game a few times, even borrowed it for a few weeks from a friend, but never made it to the bridge you set the explosives on. It's cool to see the game destroyed so easily. I had never seen the FPS/Shootout/Commando parts before. On that note, good job! On the other hand, the game is rather boring. *The first part is a huge maze you don't fully appreciate until you get crazy lost in there and are running out of men. TAS'ing the game removes the tension the normal gamer feels. *In the FPS portion, do you really need the Compass or the Flares? I never see the flares used, and if you know the map for the Commando level, do you even need the compass for directions? *In the commando level, great dodging, but can you spam grenades faster and use death as a shortcut on that last boss? I'm happy to see it submitted, and I think all games should have a "fastest possible TAS time" listed on the site, but it's really more of a niche game that only those that really grew up on NES or played this way back then would fully appreciate. The youtube videos don't do it justice... other then calling it one of the "worst games ever". I'd try to improve it myself, but as my vote says... "Meh".

ABOUT THE RUN: This game has been TASed on times where you have lots of great games and platforms to make a TAS from, and as music videos, great videos are made from great songs, in this case this game is not that good, in fact, some people felt so frustrated by it (including me), that they actually remember it as one of the worst games they have ever played. Even so, since i first got here, i enjoyed looking at TASes to see games get crushed (like simon´s quest) and discover what the hell i did wrong? what did i miss in order to finish it?, and that's the main reason i choose this game to make a TAS, not expecting much of course, just wanted to share this with other people that maybe, identify this game as clearly as you. ABOUT THE TAS: You need to get all the items in order to advance, i just got the essentials to finish each level. Death can't be used as a shortcut because when you die, you waste way too much frames to respawn, that's why i decided to dodge bullets and just get killed on the last shot. I have rechecked all the above mentioned TAS improvements but sadly, they don't seem to improve the run. Thanks for your comments, even a meh or a no is well received.

fuck your run is good, I'm sure that if it would be an avgn review... everyone would shoot a YES Seriously, you might want to edit your submission to add these important information. I liked your run and the ending music was quite good... ^_^

I remember playing this game until I could beat it in one sitting with no problems (yeah I had no life as a kid). At one point I even had all of the maps memorized, so watching this game get completely destroyed brought a tear to my eye :) However I'm gonna vote meh on this one just because I know most people will find it boring since nearly every spot in the game looks the same as the last (which is what made it so frustrating to everybody who owned it). I am surprised that there are no movement tricks that can be abused though, would've been funny to see your guy running around like a madman or warping through walls straight to the finish line.

UPDATE: I finally saw the movie, and it has nothing to do with the game, something that i just can't understand is why they did a game based on a movie that wasn't suitable for kids?

This game looks like it was programmed by four separate groups or something... if each segment were about 1 minute I think this would be almost acceptable. As it stands, I don't see this being much more than Gruefood Delight I'm afraid. But, here's an encode! http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1665523/platoon-taspreview-chupapi.mkv

After watching alden's encode, I have to vote No. The game choice was terrible, as the first 2/3 were incredibly boring.

I liked all the different game styles. I couldn't see any mistakes, so I voted Yes. Must have been a tough maze!

I found the first 6 minutes very boring to watch. The remaining was a dull meh. So overall, I have to vote no.

One more thing I'd like to ask: did you test what happens when L+R/U+D and other weird button combinations are pressed? Maybe ULR or ULD etc etc. I hope there's at least some glitch that can help bypass some spots in the game, especially the jungle maze in the beginning.

Actually i did try those button combinations, but nothing happened, i guess the game has a solid code. or maybe a very simple one.

Out of sheer morbid curiosity I tried this game out. At least in the third section it's possible to go outside bounds using D+L+R, so maybe there is some hope left for this game. EDIT: here's a vid of this and some other glitches I found.
