I finally started a "serious" TAS attempt of Final Fantasy VIII. I've been following darkwasabi's speedrun route so far, but I'm hoping to find things that should be done different or faster in a TAS, so I can start a new one with this information when an emulator with better sound becomes available. You can watch what I have so far in these YouTube videos: Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYEPGQUwL2o Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXdZB0TnINs Part 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-u9xu7RLyg Part 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aePgS4YqVR4 Part 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcSV3aGfdds Part 6: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4CpRPdUwW4 Or you can get the pxm file. Any feedback?
You're just fucking stupid, everyone hates you, sorry to tell you the truth. no one likes you, you're someone pretentious and TASes only to be on speed game, but don't have any hope, you won't get there.

Sound promising enought, not sure where was the emulation bugs, its hard to notice Is it not possible to "skip" battles like in ff7, by walking at some point to avoid it ? No analog ? that would be bad for that game i guess

i think there might be a way to skip the opening animation. it might save some frames. also there away to skip battles but a certain Gf(summon) has to learn the No encounter ability. this should be done soon to save some time

http://speeddemosarchive.com/forum/index.php/topic,5106.1275.html darkwasabi already broke the Random Encounters, you can find some pretty detailed stuff about it here. There's probably plenty more in that thread, but at 93 pages there is a lot to sift through. I suggest you try reading as much of this topic as you can, especially the parts pertaining to RC avoidance. I believe the RAM addresses for Danger Values and so on are also listed somewhere in this thread.

Looking very forward to this. Not getting the limit break on the first try looks pretty bad, is it not manipulatable by delaying the previous command?

there is apparently a built in thing into the game, where you press circle until you get it. i suppose you could manipulate this, it could save a ton of frames, as you can keep doing it on one characters turn, with out the turn ending.

Of course I know that, I meant is it not possible to manipulate it so it appears on the first try so you don't have to ever "press circle".

not unless you have low HP. you can manipulate it so that you can only press circle once.

I have no idea what you're talking about, of course you are on low HP. The situation in the video is this: Squall is on low HP. Squall's turn comes up, but the limit break doesn't. mz presses circle and the limit break comes up. What I'm wondering is whether you can manipulate the situation into this: Squall is on low HP. Squall's turn comes up, and he gets the limit break right away, without pressing circle. Are you saying this is not possible?

I was wondering this myself. I'm sure, like anything 'random' that it can be manipulated to occur instantly rather than having to press circle, I'm guessing that will be one of the many things where a bot will be needed to find the right frame to start the previous limit on so the next time you can act you get a Limit.

Yes, I've been reading a little that thread before starting this run. In my tests (and I think darkwasabi said the same somewhere in that thread) I've been able to just delays some random encounters, and that hasn't been useful so far. There's also a menu trick that can delay RE, but it's useless for a TAS because of this:

Well, I tried, but couldn't get with a faster way than the current attempt. I'm not sure how the RNG works for various things (like the Rough Divide animation), but it would save many minutes if I could crack it.

There is support for analog, but I can't TAS seriously with a controller; I use tons of keys. :P If someone could make something like the N64 TAS Input plugin, it may save quite a few minutes in the run.

It might actually save ~5 minutes. :P I don't think it's possible, though.

No, it is possible. What I was saying, and I may have gotten confused is that you dont need a low hp for a limit break to come up. You can press circle until it comes up, however this may take a while. I remember trying for a while to get the limit break closer to full. When you are low an Hp thouhg it appears more often. Yes, you are correct that he should have manipulated it, so that squall got it right away but what I'm saying is, that he may only need one or two attack on squall before the manipulation comes. He can keep re recording until he only has to press circle once. THis is due because of the fact that the game was it designed for it to occur randomly, more frequently appearing with lower HP, and I mean More frequently. He could leave all characters at 1 and get it ever turn

Actually, it needs HP lower than 32%, a party member dead or some bad status to come up. And it seems the game doesn't like giving limits in every turn at the first try, because I couldn't get the last one to do that. It might be manipulable with some even early actions, perhaps.

Wow, really? Are you sure about those last two? Because I have never ever gotten a limit break without being low on HP (without Aura of course).

So, by the by, are you planning on abusing The End to OHKO every single boss you can with Selphie? If you are then I'll just take back what I said about looking forward to this :P

I had the official strategy guide, which says that you don't need to be low, but on the other hand, its been a while. umm, as for traveling between places, when possible, you might want to spend all of your money on gas and ride trains and cars and what not. It might go faster cause there are no encounters Also don't just abused Selphie's the end ability, that would just be boring.

I found this WIP to be very entertaining. It's been years since I last played through this game so I'm looking forward to seeing it TASed. I really hope you continue with this. I also think that using 'The End' against every boss would get boring pretty quickly, but what alternatives are there? Does this game have any characters that have glitchy damage dealing e.g. the Tifa route in FF7, or would you upgrade your weapons and just Lionheart everything?

Well... You can do ALOT with Junctioning. (Sorry... not THAT familiar with the Englisch FF's ;)) Do you intend to play cards to get some powerful items at the beginning? I hope not xD I think THIS would be also boring to watch. Hmm... I just can't think of any good strategies that wouldn't waste alot time. (like playing cards, draw 100 Magic at the beginning etc.) Allthough it can be MUCH easier with some good magic. (like junctioning "Water" to Strength for a great boost at the beginning.)

If playing cards for any length of time is viable through luck manipulating, I'd say get some Abyss Worms and Mesmerizes (I believe that's what they're called) for Tornado and Regen respectively. Tornado is good for basically anything and Regen is very nice for HP; their cards also have a fairly high chance of showing up. Using them you'll be well prepared for the spider bot, which you can 'kill' (that is, enough to get the 50 AP - actually killing it might still be faster than the cutscene though) in a single renzokuken with Tornado junctioned to strength. (followed by a normal attack to stun it again). I don't know if the 200 AP you can get from him is useful with only the first four GFs though. If playing cards is out of the question, getting some fish scales from the coastal area for some Waters might be a possible second best, assuming you can manipulate them coming out of the ground right away.

Or just "Card" them. With this relatively easy method he doesn't gain any levels, can get a lot scales, get AP AND of course he gets a card. And 5x (Foca-Double in the german version) rewards you with a Watercrystal (Refine Card) for 50 Water Magic.

Water is good as a temporary measure until you get Tornado. I think for a faster time, beating the spider bot the only time you are required will be the best thing, since there aren't many GF abilities that are worth it by the time you get there for a speedrun. Getting Card ASAP will be helped by beating Ifrit and fighting the Fastilochians on the beach (6 AP each). Of course, getting some of the refine-mods will help for getting the magic you need, but they can be done as you go

Wow, that's awesome. He actually does it once while only blinded instead of being both blinded and silenced. So does that basically mean Aura can be substituted with Blind? Or was this one of those gay RPGs where you can't cast negative spells on your own party members?
