Yes, you can target yourself with status. Of course, it may just be a byproduct of only having 2 members in the party at this point rather than 3, so I don't know how much easier it would be with a full party, even if you do inflict status on yourself. At least status doesn't go away at the end of a battle, so you can use this trick multiple times to get some higher health Limits

There's a lot to be done with the cards, but I think a little to much card playing would get boring. Also as for bosses i know that in one battle with Biggs and Wedge ( i think it is the battle on disc 2, or the last one on disc three though im not sure which one) where they are vulnerable to status effects, though it might take longer, it might be fun to see a few things, cast Zombie and then reagen, so the bosses die. THey are also vulnerable to confuse magic, and it hilarious watching them kill each other. IT would be entertaining. As for the Junctioning, if i remember correctly there are certain magics that will increase a stat the greatest amount if you use it there. All i remember is that cure magics give the most to HP, on the other hand, every time you use a cure spell you Hp goes down. THat may or may not be a problem. Would it beneficial to fight Cerberus to get double or triple cast with everyone? it might help with a few fights, and the animation is really short. As for the the

I'm pretty sure you should be able to luck manipulate getting Renzokuken when you want it. It's easier when Squall is the only party member alive, but if you just keep cancelling his attack (triangle button) he'll get it eventually even with reasonably high HP (possibly not with full HP, I dunno), and you should be able to do that very quickly in a TAS. It's annoying when you're doing it by hand because you'll be cancelling so fast you're likely to miss it when it appears :P

Here's part 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-u9xu7RLyg (pxm): from getting the fish fins to right before Dollet (pretty boring segment, if you ask me). I already got most of the useful RAM addresses for battles: The only thing missing for writing a semi-decent bot was to know what made the RNG advance, and I figured that out by the last turn of the first fight, and perfected it by the end of the second fight. If you play the pxm file, you can see how I press the circle button there like a madman (even before the dialog boxes appear) just to get the needed extra fish fin (~5% chance), to get the Rough Divide animation (~50%) and to get the Fastitocalon out of the ground (this was the hardest one). Knowing how to easily manipulate the RNG, I should do the three fights again, but this is only the test run and I'm too lazy to bother yet. :P

That sounds entertaining. I'll probably do various of those things to make the ~8:30hr movie more bearable. Also, I won't abuse Selphie's The End; I promise. :P

That's what darkwasabi did, and I'm still following his steps. :P I will play cards once in a while, though; especially to get the high level ones later on.

I'm not sure (probably Toothache or Kyrsimys know better), but I think it's mostly the latter.

Have you tried Quistis' Laser Eye? It seems like it would much faster to use against the Fastitocalons, and possibly about the same speed against Ifrit.

So what about Selphie's The End? Are you going to use it? If you are then there's no need to worry about battle strategies. It would be one damn boring run though. About glitchy damage dealing, I'm not aware of anything other than Zell's famous infinite limit break. That screenshot looks pretty awesome by the way, I'm sure people speedrunning this game would give anything to be able to use something like that.

MZ said he wasn't going to abuse it. Oonce in a while is ok, but it would get too boring.

You could make it kind of symbolic and only use Selphie's "The End" on the very last boss...

usually i think it's actually faster to do renzokuken because The End spell takes a pretty long time. it would be useful in the fight against diablos though, because you don't yet have the triple magic that you can junction for insane str (most bosses die with one renzokuken once you have the triples). it's probably impossible, or almost impossible to get The End so early in the game though.

I remember (on the PC version) getting a Renzokuken at full health with no status effects. It's been a while, but I think it should be possible to get one at full health, if you get the RNG right.

I uploaded some new segments to Youtube: Part 4, Part 5 and Part 6 (pxm). The movie length so far is 1:00:42.

That's an interesting question. darkwasabi said it was slower, but I think it might be faster in a TAS. I will surely test it the next time I have to do those fights.

Mainly for L Mag-RF (Refine Life/Recovery Magic). I don't know if ST-Def-J or ST-Def-Jx2 can be useful for a TAS, since you can manipulate enemy attacks.

and Part 6
i know this sounds a bit crazy, but at 2:57 when you go back to balamb garden in the world map, it could be a good idea to rent a car, because a car goes faster. it costs some money, but it will probably not be a problem. the car can also be used one more time later to get faster to that city.
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXdZB0TnINs
the fight with ifrit could have been a little faster if you would have drawn fire from ifrit and cast it on squall, because with luck manipulation, the drawn fire can sometimes inflict 150HP damage.

Each guard has 105 HP, but Seifer only does ~90 HP damage (95 being the highest I could get).

It seems you're right. I made a quick test and it was at least 200 frames faster.

I notice you are not using the jitter-walk. Does it not work, or is it not worth the effort for the test run?

I answered that here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/p/210096. (Short version: it's not very useful.) Comparing mine with darkwasabi's run, he had one fight less so far. I wonder why he didn't get that extra fight there (at 7:20 in Part 4); he doesn't seem to walk or anything, and I tried various things to skip it, but couldn't find anything. (And I'm already watching the RAM addresses for danger, offsync, and stepID...)

Just see your WIP, getting the fish fins is pretty awesome for me ( if i'm working on this, i'll draw about more than 70 Fire from Ifrite>_<, but your way is better). And here i have 3 qustions: Why you got the 7cards at the beginning? For card games? ( Quistis's or Zell's card?) And in Dollet, the part of run away, out side the bar, when the groupC's member come out, you can run into the bar, and the CG will be cut, i think it will save a lot of time. The third question: Your plan to fight with Granaldo + 3 Raldo?

In case it's gone overlooked, Absolute Steve's FAQ has some pretty useful information like damage calculation and Limit Break power. Also:
Limit Breaks can be used whenever a character is in "Crisis". To get into Crisis
a character must be under one or more of the following conditions:

o Characters HP is lower than 32% of Max HP
(Seifer's HP must be lower than 84% of Max HP)
o Aura Status
o Some negative statuses
o KO'd characters

.-------------.-----. .--------------.-----.
|Bad Status: | % | |# KO'd chars: | % |
|=============|=====|  |==============|=====|
|Zombie: | 0% | | 0 | 0% |
|Vit0: | 0% | | 1 | 8% |
|Slow: | 6% | | 2 | 16% |
|Poison: | 12% | '--------------'-----'
|Slow Petrify:| 12% |
|Darkness: | 12% | There are 4 Crisis Levels. Level 1 is the lowest, and
|Silence: | 12% | Level 4 is the highest. The higher the Crisis Level, the
|Doom: | 18% | more powerful the Limit Break will be.
'-------------'-----'

Getting Crisis Level 4 at a 100% chance: Have a character at 10% or less of the
Max HP and have them under the Aura Status.
I wonder if Quistis's LV?Death would be of any use, now that I see the digit changes with her crisis level? I wouldn't expect it to work on bosses like in FFV, though...

Seifer can use the Gunblade trigger, just like squall. Did you use that?

Card Mod, probably. Maybe for playing cards to Card Mod some of the higher ones. I've been trying to figure out the Limit Break requirements. Unfortunately, most "knowledge" seems to be copied off a single source, and it's incomplete. Here's what it says: There are 5 Crisis Levels. 0 is normal, 1-4 allow you to execute Limit Breaks. The higher your Crisis Level, the better the Limit Break (i.e. more hits with renzokuken). This guide claims that certain things increase your Crisis Level, but doesn't say how many points are needed for which Level. Anyway, here's the list as claimed by that guide and other sources:
 ________________________________
|Negative Status Bonus|Crisis(Up)|
|_____________________|__________|
|HP <= 32% of max HP  |  + ??%   | (Bonus depends on your HP. Seifer: 84%)
|_____________________|__________|
|Aura | + ??% |
|_____________________|__________|
|Death Sentence | + 18% |
|_____________________|__________|
|Gradual Petrify | + 12% |
|_____________________|__________|
|Blind | + 12% |
|_____________________|__________|
|Poison | + 12% |
|_____________________|__________|
|Silence | + 12% |
|_____________________|__________|
|Slow | + 6% |
|_____________________|__________|
|1 Party Member down | + 8% |
|_____________________|__________|
|2 Party Member down | + 16% |
|_____________________|__________|
If any of this is true, then it's a good idea to keep Squall blind whenever possible - he has 255% hit anyway. Maybe silenced too, if he's just going to be a renzo-machine. (too bad there's no cursed ring in this game) So I went and tried to figure this out. Quistis with "Micro Missiles" seemed to be a perfect indicator of Crisis Level: CL1: reduces HP of target foe by 50% of current HP. CL2: reduces HP of target foe by 75% of current HP. CL3: reduces HP of target foe by 87,5% of current HP. CL4: reduces HP of target foe by 93,75% of current HP. unfortunately, even at CL4, there's a chance she'll only reduce by 50%, making this testing waaay complicated. Meaning that these 4 CLs may actually not exist and it's just a couple of random rolls against an internal "crisis bonus". So far I can confirm:
  • Silence can raise your crisis level
  • Blind can raise your crisis level
  • Dead party members can raise your crisis level - finally a use for zell \o/
  • The whole list as above seems fishy. I wouldn't trust it too much.
but, unfortunately, nothing else :( Maybe a memory search will yield more information? edit: oh, ninja'd by a mage :)

he did use it in the next fight. seifer did 88HP damage, and surprisingly, the soldier died from that. maybe that particular soldier had less health.

About the crisis levels: is it possible to even know in what level are you at the moment? I mean, how do you know if you are in level 1, 2, 3 or 4? I think I've been at the same crisis level throughout most of the run so far, and yet I've been able to greatly change the damage inflicted by Renzokuken with a bit of luck manipulation (with it you can change from only 3 hits to ~8 hits plus Rough Divide, for example).

Heh. :P

I doubt it; there are just too many variables that seem to be RNGs. Maybe a debugger can help, but I'm not too experienced with ASM yet.

That's correct. There seems to be two different types of G-Soldier:

I haven't tried this one yet, but I think you are correct. Though I don't know why darkwasabi didn't use it...
computerbird wrote:

None yet. :P darkwasabi used Renzokuken for Granaldo and Shiva for the 3 Raldo; I'll see if there is a faster way in a TAS. --- I haven't been working on this lately because I've been trying to find a fix for Metal Gear Solid (the game crashes right before the final boss in PCSX-RR), though without any success, by the way.
