I want to create AVI files from some TAS movies I have downloaded. But, every time I try to "Record AVI...", snes9x gives me the following error: "Failed to create AVI file." I have followed this site's instructions for snes9x 1.43, but once I name the AVI file and click save, I don't receive an option to select any codec or filter. snes9x creates a 0-byte AVI file at the location I chose and then gives me the error. I have codecs and filters on my system to play pretty much any media file I encounter, but I'm wondering if it doesn't like my non-default install paths. I can't really think of any other reason I wouldn't be able to create the AVIs.

Codecs to play video and codecs to make videos are two different things. You need to install codecs to make videos. :) Also, BB Code in this forum for links is:

Thanks for the tip. It's my understanding that ffdshow is both an encoder and a decoder (even the portmanteau "codec" comes from "code" and "decode"). So, having installed ffdshow, why doesn't snes9x detect that?

It might, but as long as they are in your PATH environment variable or are referred to in the Registry or the relevant INI files it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, I open VirtualDub and can select ffdshow from the encoding list there, so I definitely don't have a path problem.

1. What Version of Windows/What Operating System? 2. Do the other emulators on this site have the same problem? 3. Do other versions of snes9x have the same problem?

I'm running on Windows XP. I tried other versions of snes9x (1.51) and the Gens emulator, and none can create an AVI. However, I'm working around this by running snes9x in a virtual machine. There, it runs just fine, so the problem obviously lies on my specific machine, but I guess I had hoped that someone here would have a similar experience.

do the following files exist in your system32 folder?: avifil32.dll - ~83kb avifile.dll - ~107kb vfwwdm32.dll - ~53kb if not, try finding them online (or take them from your virtual machine) and putting them there.

I didn't have vfwwdm32.dll, but I checked my virtual machine, and it doesn't have that DLL either. I copied a vfwwdm32.dll (52.5kB) from my "\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\" directory, but that didn't make AVI writing work.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/205087 Any of those missing from your pc that exist on your virtual machine? (note: I'm not sure if all of them will be in system32... and if they don't exist on your virtual machine, they aren't needed anymore)

Nope, I have all of those too. It seems like I just have a bad registry entry somewhere.

Then sorry, I'm fresh out of ideas. If you find out the source of your problem then please post the solution here as I would be most interested to see what it is.
