[P0RTAL 0ƒ RAIN] ~ presents to you

~~ N.E.S. Willow ~~

  • 4th draft ~ 1'06:18.95 @ 60.0 frames/sec (1'06:12.41 @ 60.1 frames/sec)
  • Complete playthrough
  • Recommended in-game screenshot: frame # 217850
  • Emulator used: FCE Ultra 0.98.28 (converted to FM2 using FCEUX 2.1.1)
  • FCEU configuration: Allow L+R/U+D
  • ROM filename used: "Willow (U) [!].nes"
  • ROM checksum used: 38D1E298F55D24F4AFD08BDAA2002939
  • Aim for fastest time
  • Take damage to save time
  • Use warps
  • Use no passwords
  • Use death as a shortcut (once)
  • Abuse programming errors in the game
  • Contains a few speed/entertainment transitions
  • Manipulate luck, random enemy encounters, and strategy
  • Genres: Action, Adventure, RPG

Before I begin, I want to make this as short as I can without much redunancy. This is an improvement of 35.51 seconds from my previous submission #2376: p0rtal_0f_rain's NES Willow in 1:06:47.92
Click that link I mentioned to read about how the game was played (WARNING: contains spoilers!) - plus technical methods, glitches, and more.

Summary

Improvements include:
  • quicker Bogarda defeat
  • playing with zero defense (no shields)
  • ignoring the need to level-grind before meeting Muzh
  • slightly stronger abuse of "inaccuracy of MP" glitch
  • manipulating random enemy encounters by using stop-and-go methods instead of sword-poking, this also saved a lot of frames

Nelwyn, Village of Dew, and Bogarda's Cave

I received word a while back that the Bogarda battle was improvable and I made sure the best adjustments for that event were made here.

Forest of Death and Matanda's Cave

I chose to skip the Gold shield upgrade in Matanda's Cave just to see how many frames I would save and how challenging the remaining part of the game would be played without a shield. I was impressed!

Lake Cheef, Crossroads, and the Under-Island Cave

At the crossroads section where Madmartigan was first found in chains, where I had to get the key to unlock the chains - I managed to take at least 3 damage-boosts from fire statues! This saved me more time as well.
A user gave word that it is possible to defeat Muzh at the Under-Island cave without using a shield. To me, not only I was able to do that, but I was also able to defeat Muzh on a lower level. Last time, I took care of Muzh on LV 5. Here, it's LV 4.
From there to the trail toward Nockmaar Castle, everything else was the same.

Path to Nockmaar

As usual, I did a level-grind here. But it has been improved due to more abuse of a glitch where MP is not accurate.

Nockmaar Castle: Preparing for Bavmorda

Strategy was the key not only to get as close to 31350 ex. as possible, but also to obtain 100 MP as well. I kill 8 zombies in a room that is simply one screen west of the main entrance. The reason is that (1) I wanted to avoid lodging at any cost. And (2) because according to my calculation, it takes 150 MP altogether to complete the entire Nockmaar scene before finally getting down to business with Queen Bavmorda.
50 to use Scepter to scare away the guard (50), 20 to Fleet after talking with Abang (70), 20 to call Ocarina to Tir Asleen (90), 20 to call Ocarina back to Nockmaar (110), 20 to Fleet out of Gen. Kael's room after defeating him (130), and 20 to call Ocarina straight to the Tavern en route to Fin Raziel's hideout (150).

Nockmaar Castle: Bavmorda

After completing the Nockmaar event and defeating Gen. Kael, the Bavmorda battle was also the same.

Special thanks to:

  • theaxeman - not only for showing that it is was possible to defeat Muzh without a shield, but also made me believe it was possible to defeat Muzh on a level 4, maybe lower. Also, for providing a WIP clip to prove this.
  • omnipotententity - for recently showing an improved route through Dew to get the Gold Statue and showing an improved Bogarda defeat.
  • emptyeye - For his recent interest in this game and setting a single-segment record on speeddemosarchive.com because I learned a few things from that run of his.
  • Finally, YOU. The tasvideos.org viewers and judges - Without your existence, none of this would be possible. Thank you! ^_^

I still had to watch a fair bit of this game on fast forward, since walking through all the tunnels takes such a long time, but the action is quite good. I really liked the battles with Muzh and the serpent-like boss. It was also nice to see some other enemies occasionally get killed for their MP drops... it adds to the variety of the run. Yes vote.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

Hey, something's got a bug. I don't know if this had to do with converting my movie to an FM2, but the time on the header is supposed to read 1'06:18.95 (not 1'06:12.41, but I wish!). Judges/admins: please make sure the time is 1'06:18.95, thanks!

This is because of timing differences between .fm2 and .fcm - fm2, see this topic for more information. Basically your run got a lower time because you converted it to .fm2.

I didn't see that link. I didn't realize a shorter time had to do with conversion and the f/s rate. Okay, thanx Randil! ^_^ Now edited to display times on both f/s rates upon FCM/FM2 conversion and submission.

Excellent, congratulations on finishing this through. I suspect that it may be faster to do more grinding rather than take an extra trip through Nockmaar. But it's close at best and more entertaining this way.

I also think this for the record. But a yes vote anyway. :)

I tested the converted FM2 on FCEUX 2.1.1 and it works fine. An unconverted fcm for FCE Ultra 0.98.25 is available upon overwhelming request.

Guys, not to bump or anything, but I need to ask a favor. I need a little bit of feedback concerning that the converted FM2 works on your copy of FCEUX 2.1.1. It works fine on my copy, but I want to make sure this runs okay on everyone else's without problems such as pesky de-syncs. ^_^ Thanx!

The action was good. You did an excellent job managing those bosses. The manipulation looked good, and most of the questions I had while watching were answered. Still...Wow. An hour of walking. That's a lot of fast forward. Not that that should necessarily deter publication--we wouldn't have Final Fantasy and similar otherwise. I say good run.

That link was either misspelled or dead. And the title was supposed to be "willow-tas-p0rtal0frain"

I clearly noticed that the audio and video were not synchronized. You're doing good on the encoding, but keep trying! ^_^

It's not a final encode by any stretch, the bit rate is way too high for one. Besides, this movie hasn't even been accepted yet. And I'm not an encoder. :)

When I first saw the tasvideos logo (cool super metroid animation btw), it seemed like you're working on the video. Don't get too far ahead! lol ^_^

I saw your video again, and I would say if you want to display the 2nd subtitle (this is a tool-assisted recording) again, I would prefer that to be displayed when Willow is making way to the Twin Towers (coming out of the under-island cave). Here's my best options:
  • Coming out of the under-island caves, heading toward the Twin Towers.
  • Walking from East tower to West tower after obtaining the first crystal.
  • Bypassing the under-island cave entrance (coming out of the water), going into Thunder mountain.
  • Walking across a pool of ground eaters (before entering the red cave)
I don't think it feels right to cut off the detail where Willow just defeated Muzh - the viewer doesn't notice that Willow picked up 2000 ex. until the screen switches into the post-Muzh-battle scene. Oh, and see if we can put an ending logo (tasvideos) or something! ^_^

Now updated with seven screenshots after I heard that the TAS Videos Robot got drunk and passed out. ^_^ Not here on this post, it's toward the bottom of my submission. Leave that robot out to die anyway, some say it gets useless overtime. =/
