I was waiting for a thread to come up, but then I decided I might as well make it myself. For starters I want to direct you to the current-record new game speedrun in 1:50:53 done by Derek Taylor. It is completely up-to-date with every trick currently known (except for skipping the Salazar boss fight which can be found right here. The biggest hurdle we face is luck manipulation, because fallen Ganado can literally drop every kind of grenade, secondary weapon ammo, pistol ammo, green herb and numerous amounts of pesetas. Obviously, we would have to try and streamline the amount of sidetracking we do, and take advantage of manipulating required Ganado kills to produce satisfactory drops. Also, the GameCube version is significantly faster than Wii, because the former has the TMP glitch (which can skip an entire map and a half).

Since Dolphin is supposedly rather close to completion I thought I'd necro this old thread. Unfortunately I don't have a way to play the PAL version at full speed but I can test as much as I can on the NTSC version (eventually, since I need to get back home first to do some more proper testing). I'm drawing up a potential route composed of some of Derek Taylor's old videos and I would like any help I can get (especially from Europeans TASers with copies of RE4). Let's get this party started!

You can find a TAS on the PS2 version here: http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm11584873 final time 1:48:07. Since it's on the (ugly) PS2 version, the TMP+Stock glitch isn't used, but instead the big boulder before Dos Gigante gets skipped.

I'm 45 minutes into this run and it is already almost physically painful to watch. And it's not just the inherent sloppiness that comes out of really basic route mistakes. Several parts are even slower than Derek Taylor's runs! However the run does get much better near the endgame (especially from Chapter 5-2 onwards). It was at least entertaining (either by being really bad or surprisingly good, depending on the level; the Krauser fight comes to mind).

I just did about 45 minutes of testing on the very first Ganado you encounter in a fresh new game (albeit on my NTSC version rather than PAL). I was able to determine that, yes, the first ganado can drop a hand grenade, although he only dropped it once in my testing session. Thanks to this we now know that the quickest way to skip the first two waves on the village fight is to use two well-placed grenades. So we can take one grenade from the first Ganado, and the second one from the bird on the signpost. Getting a critical headshot in addition to the grenade is important obviously, reloading a frame before the cutscene triggers a la Derek's run.

Really cool you are going to TAS this. Your MGS run is great. I am actually an RE4 GC PAL speed runner. Well... used to be. My name is Greg Innes. http://www.archive.org/details/ResidentEvil4_eu_Ada_631 I actually talked to Derek about a TAS of RE4 months ago for fun. He had so many different ideas for a TAS and I remember him telling me that if he could TAS the game he could probably get like 1:37 There is honestly so much notes and ideas for this run I have you would get bored reading them. When I next see Derek on MSN I will link him here. If I had the time and the PC power I would invite Derek to my house to TAS. We live close together.

Yip. I couldn't get the dumped audio to match so DKC 2 was added. Pwns RE4 music any day. Anyway, I got the PAL version of Gamecube to TAS. I don't even want to try PAL Wii for the added bugs. I was talking to Derek and we both agree that it will be difficult but a critical shot and a grenade for the opening ganado is a must as it will save some seconds in the village. Even two critical headshots can't match a grenade for the two opening ganados in the village. Getting that start is just a run killer though. The amount of retries for that scenario alone is probably in the thousands. The item drop is generated when you walk into the cutscene so first of all you need to get a critical which is probably going to be done in the first 50 or so tries. If you don't get a grenade drop though, you gotta then reload before the cutscene and spend another 50 or so tries getting a critical just to see if you get a grenade. Might possibly be the toughest and highest rerecord TAS of all time.

I am not a huge Resident Evil fan but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a tas of this game. In fact, once it's done, I think a lot of people will thoroughly enjoy it because how pretty smooth the game looks compared with the first Resident Evil game and the fact that it looks to be a somewhat fun game. I hope you guys can endure the desynchs. I recommend using Toadking's tas input window.

I tried again and have a much more sane strategy. I use two bullets on the first guy. Since I am then going to headshot the two people at village I save 6 bullets anyway over your typical console run. So I get to the village and headshot the opening people. The cutscene triggers and I make a fast switch to the grenade. I was having no luck with the group. The woman ganado at the back just pointed and it's impossible to hit her up on the ridge. You need to kill the whole pack to trigger the cutscene after the grenade throw in the house. Frustrated I decide to replay what I had as I was proud of it..... my movie desynchs on the run to the village.... 4 hours down the drain *sigh* I honestly think this game will never be TAS'd. The amount of problems and luck needed for the game is crazy. 1-1 is arguably one of the easiest chapters....

Welcome to the world of TASing. What you just described happens to every TASer, on every TAS. I'm sure in the long run those lost 4 hours wont be that much, especially considering that during that time you've learned what strategy you need to use in this section; so it's not 'down the drain' as you put it.

I managed to salvage some of the 1-1 attempt. Now I remember what happened. Dolphin crashed like just as I approached the two ganados at the bridge and I just reloaded the save instead of replacing my save states from an uncorrupted crash. That is why the desynch happened I think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTlsOV9A6js&feature=channel_video_title Just to see where I was speed wise I TAS'd till the end of 1-1 and saved. I got 4:02 which is 1 second behind the world record of Derek and I was not even trying for the most part and had to equip the handgun again inside the house in the village to kill two ganados (long story). I honestly think 3:55 is well within reach for a 1-1 attempt if everything goes perfectly. I also made the silly mistake of escaping the boulder asap when I should have waited till the last few frames to make it further down the hill. Edit - Just got 3:57, new record. :P

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2n5iQoQW8p0 Some of the village attempted. The new dolphin revision is actually pretty decent and the most reliable for tasing I have used. Only one crash in 3 hours! Edit - Game desynched right after the grenade throw but I got a new record for 1-1 now. 3:55 3:53 is probably the max unless crazy luck manipulation happens.

My 3:53 for 1-1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MZ7ezTVrVA I am now in talks with Daniel (also SDA runner of the game) for ajoint effort at this. We are just unsure of what version to use. We think we will use the JAP version since it is a true 60hz version of PAL and easier.

To avoid any confusion, I am Daniel, aka SoulCalibr. I have an SDA record for Pro Mode (which the run I will say is rather unimpressive). I am currently leaning toward the JPN version of the game unless others have objections to that. Some text may go by faster in JPN, and also the PAL tricks still work, as well as the JPN version is reported to be easier. The biggest problem will be manipulation of the RNG. If anyone can inform me of how to access this sort of information in Dolphin, it would make me go insane at a slower pace. I will also test which version has the most enemy pickups (I think NTSC, but not 100% on that)....anyway, good luck to me I suppose. FIRST TAS ATTEMPT! :D

I am having trouble starting the game. Luckily I was able to figure out frame advance and such. Darn thing desynced on me 78 frames in! :/ I need someone to translate these screenshots for me. I am 99% certain the first screen is asking to either "retry locating memory card" and "continue without saving." After that, I select "start" and it gives me and Easy or Normal option. Being a purist, I will choose Normal, since NA versions don't have Easy. I will try and create some WIP in the next few days. I have never TASed, so I want to know if I screw up.

Angerfist, I noticed you said something about using a certain TAS plugin to do this run. I am just using the default options for the 64Bit-r7261 release of Dolphin. If there are any necessary benefits to the other plugins, I don't see a reason to use them. Also, anyone know how to do memory watching? Also, keep in mind that movement is done in a digital fashion, as in up down left right and combinations of those only. Aiming however is analog to allow for precise shots. This benefits me because I won't have to do exact micro-movements when changing directions. So if I'm running straight and need to slightly go left, I'll just hold up-left for a certain # of frames. For sharp corners however I will use the (analog) Cstick-R combo to change to the exact angle I need, then proceed to run in that direction straight. Lastly, what is the default X and Y values for a GC controller not plugged in? I'm getting an X value of 128 and a Y of 131. I would also like to see if these numbers affect enemy item drops or other things like that, even if the joystick isn't tilted enough to cause Leon to move. I could use the D-pad for movement and the analog stick for affecting the RNG.

How about just using the PAL version? The added text speed of J can't save you that much time... Are you even sue that there is a difference? Some newer games draw text in a set amount of time. Not characters per frame... For Dolphin settings you might want to go with this thread: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10918

I would prefer JPN because I have heard of its benefits over other versions. The only one I can readily remember is that headshots are suppose to be more frequent. What are the exact advantages of PAL? Also it runs at a lower framerate. Gameinn informed me that we can force 60Hz onto the PAL version by holding B. Idk if this is part of the gamecube structure or the emulator, but I'm fairly certain forcing 60hz on a 50Hz game is against TASvideos rules. If it is allowed, I'll consider switching over, but I need to know exact advantages of PAL over others, and if anyone can plz be as specific as you possibly can and list as many advantages as you can. And again, is there a way to (easily) test item drop rates between versions? Headshot rates? Critical hits? I would prefer a version with higher rates, if one version has that advantage.

Well "it's easier" isn't a sufficient reason to use it for a TAS. A TAS is supposed to be hard and make it look easy. Regarding the framerate and stuff I'm going to copy my youtube comments:
PAL60 is native to the GC. TASvideos won't accept speed hacks but that is not the case with GC. Also PAL50 won't run any slower. That is a thing of old consoles. Games from the GC generation and after will run at the same speed, just refresh frames a little slower. It's just a visual thing. But with PAL60 you have better visuals than with NTSC. I really don't know enough about the game to say if there are tricks missing for J version. Though TASvideos tends to reject TASes if they were played on J just for faster text speed. The game being easier is a reason not to TAS it on that version, btw. A TAS should make something hard look easy, to surprise. But I don't know if you are planning to submit. If not there shouldn't be a problem...
It is a native gamecube feature. The rules are kinda outdated. I'm going to make a thread about it... My main point being: you might want to look into version differnces a little more before making a final descision on this one... and if you can't work the game on J, that's also not a good thing.

It would make little sence to change the rng routine in between versions so that you get less headshoot, and you wouldnt have any way to figure this unless decompiling or something like that. In resident evil games usually hp boss are lower in japanesse versions, i dont know if that is followed for this game. The reason to take pal version is glitchs, afaik it allow to skip certain boss or stuffs, i dont think its a problem to run the game at 60hz because this is _in_ game setting, the rule is about to run a 50hz game but at 60hz, resulting in smaller real time video, this isnt the case here. (ie you didnt changed emulator speed, the game did)

I guess since I'm the only one defending JPN I'll use PAL. JPN does have all the glitches of PAL though, as far as I know. If bosses have less health that won't be much of a change since rocket launcher is used for most bosses (1HKO). Any other advantages? And do I just hold B on startup? On NTSC holding B forces progressive scan 30fps. Does doing progressive scan change or screw up emulator settings?
