Has anyone considered doing a Turok 3 TAS? It's not as good as Turok 1 and the characters move kinda slow. But at least nobody can complain about getting motion sickness. I didn't like Turok 2, the levels were too big and boring, so I expected Turok 3 to be bad too, but it was actually pretty good. I think they were in a hurry when they made this game, because it has a lot of bugs and glitches. There are some desync issues, which can be pretty annoying. It seems like games with low framerate usually have desync issues. I did Level 1 in 7:40 (ingame time: 6 min) and started doing some Level 2 also. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugWFXnJSNUQ m64: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1349582099/turok3tas.m64 (edit: There's a "bug" if you try to record this game without choosing a custom name. The "internal rom name" is Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion, so because you can't have colon (:) in windows file names, the m64 and save state become messed up and turn into a file that is just called Turok 3.)

I personally really enjoy this game. I still haven't had much luck playing it by emulator, cause I can never get the controls right. But I would definately watch a TAS.

I'm very excited to see you working on this. I didn't know this as emulated well because of the expansion pak! This was a great game with great visuals for the N64. I actually just bought Turok 2 for the PC because I never finished it on the N64 (a combination of slideshow framerates and awful save system).

I'm also pretty surprised that this seems to emulate well. I'm a big fan of the level design in this game, it's some of my favorite on the N64. I like what you've done so far and I look forward to more of it.

Yeah, I haven't noticed any problems with the graphics emulation. But this desyncs quite much, so I can only do 1 minute at a time, and then I have to play it back to see where it desyncs, and redo it. But despite desyncs slowing down the progress, I'm done with another 10 minute segment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x62bEvElnvM m64: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1182905809/turok3tas%20WIP2.m64 This goes through the rest of level 2 and almost level 3 also. I was a bit surprised how long Level 3 took despite the big shortcut there. Level 2 took 7:32. Ingame time was 12 at that point. Level 3 took 6:43. Ingame time was 18 (but very close to 19). Feel free to add some comments, improvements, suggestions, criticism and such.

Level 4 done, and a few minutes of the last level too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXQGRBBMCSw m64: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/556353160/turok3tas.m64 Level 4 is a pretty long level, but there's some major shortcuts there, so it only took 6 minutes and 43 seconds, which is the exact same time as the previous level, lol. The ingame time is 24 when level 5 starts. Feel free to add some comments, improvements, suggestions, criticism and such. I think there's only about 5 minutes left to do now.

Okay, I'm done with the last part. The last level was a little longer than I expected. 13:10: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpXbWsuLXY0 The time for the TAS is 41:45.95, and the ingame time is 36. Submission topic: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9382

I found a cool thing that could have been used to skip the Opisthor boss on Level 3 (since it's a long boss, it would save over a minute), but the game crashes when I do it. By getting close to one of the bosses so that it hits me, I can be thrown over the wall to the place where I can enter level 4. The boss dies instantly when I go there even though I haven't shot it, but when it dies the game crashes for some reason. I wonder if there would be any way to prevent it from crashing?

What was it about this game that was so good? I've watched it on Youtube, and it looked like it paled in comparison to Turok 1, and was a fairly generic game. Just average at best, with very linear, uninteresting levels with none of the exploration and interesting environments that Turok 1 had. The voice acting was also considerably worse, and most of the bosses were all a complete joke (again, unlike Turok 1). Of course, I've never played Turok 2, so I don't know how well that holds up compared to 3, but still. What made this game so good?

It is generally considered to be the worst of the 3 games on the N64. Sure the first was panned for draw distance and fog, but it introduced a few new FPS elements, and the second game just took the first game and improved on it (better draw distance, better graphics, bigger levels, smarter enemies, more modes, etc.). The third took a step back graphically, and the gameplay is a lot more generic (you don't really even fight dinosaurs much)

Eh, actually, you DO fight raptors occasionally, but yeah, I see what you mean.

It could be a failsafe. They probably found that flaw and decided to make the game crash if you go through with it. xD

Strange how the voice acting could be "considerably worse" than in Turok 1 since the only voice acting in Turok 1 was when he said "I am Turok" :P But anyway, nobody has said this game is good so I don't know where you got that from. I thought it was pretty good though but I'm just a nobody. It's strange, but in many ways Turok 2 actually had better graphics even though it's an older game. The controls were bad (laggy) though and the levels were empty, large and boring, so I thought turok 2 was the worst, and the first was the best.

A video of a useless out of bound glitch I found back when I TASed this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNfeiedrx1s There's also the Opisthor skip and other crap.

Seriously, the sounds that enemies make when they're killed are a joke compared to the sounds they made in Turok 1. But anyway, nobody has said this game is good so I don't know where you got that from. I thought it was pretty good though but I'm just a nobody. Turok 2 probably had better graphics because it used the fog while Turok 3 didn't. Also, it seems like almost everyone in this thread says that this game was great.

I had something very interesting happen, was it known that you can jump from very high and not be injured without using any items? A few weeks ago, I pulled my Turok 3 cartridge out of storage and started playing through the game. I got to the initial part where the pedestrian bridge gets taken out and I didn't quite remember what to do, so I tried to jump the gap. I didn't make, but I survived the fall. Initially, my response was "oh, maybe I'm supposed to go down here" as I couldn't recall. So, I ran down the street and ended up falling off the level into the abyss. After a few seconds of falling, I was placed back at the top of the bridge (on the side I had jumped from). I tried to recreate what had just happened, but to no avail. I wasn't mashing buttons or anything, I'm not really sure what I hit. But I survived that MASSIVE fall. Has this been done before? Could this be useful in the TAS?

Yeah, I actually survived that once too. I'm not sure I was able to replicate it, but in any case, I couldn't find any use of it. This game is really buggy :P Because I knew it's buggy, that's how I actually got the idea to try to fall there. Thanks for telling about that though, you never know if a bug could be useful.

Okay, cool. I wish I had made a savestate down there so I could have run down the other side of the street...
