I hope we can some day get a functioning Dreamcast Emulator. It would be fun to see TASes for the Phantasy Star Online games. :3

While the reasoning was sound, this was so obvious an April Fool's Day stunt it hurt. Glad it worked out in the long run though. But if you REALLY want to punk someone out with something SCARY, you need to do what OUR local paper did [and apparently all their publications across the country] http://www.winnipegsun.com/news/canada/2010/03/31/13431051.html When you call the #, [area code 204], it thanks you for calling and only at the end does it let you know it's a joke by syaing Happy April Fool's Day. But DAMN, the people coming into work bitching about this was priceless. ^^ Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

If I may expand on what I already wrote in the "blades of steel" thread: I am one of the few people who have been an active member of the site since the very beginning, since the very first "alpha" versions of the website made by Bisqwit, since his very first attempt at SMB using Famtasia. We discussed about running games using an emulator with savestates from the very beginning. Personally it was always clear to me from the very start that running a game on an emulator is different from running the game on a real console. There always are tiny differences which make them just slightly different (for example an emulator cannot hope to match the clock frequencies of the console with a nanosecond accuracy). But that has never been the point. The main point of TASing, from the very beginning, has been: If we assumed an absolutely perfect and all-powerful god-like being who has absolute knowledge of what the console and the game are doing and can predict absolutely everything with complete perfection and accuracy, what would it look like if such a being would play a console game? A TAS recorded on an emulator might not be replayable on a real console, but that doesn't mean that a perfect god-like player would be unable to match the time of the TAS in the console (give or take a few frames). The exact sequence of events that happens in the TAS might not be replayable as-is on the console, but the overall events and most importantly the completion time could perfectly be replicated on the real console by a god-like being, even if a few details go slightly differently. That's the point. So in other words, it's not about "could this pre-recorded TAS be replayed on a real console?" (and has never been), but "could a god-like perfect player complete Super Metroid in 21:35?", and the answer is: Yes (give or take a few frames). And such a run would look pretty much like the TAS. I haven't followed the regular speedrunning community quite closely, but as far as I know, bar a few dissenting opinions, in general TASing is seen there as a valuable resource. Lots of work goes into making TASes of popular games, and things like new glitches and routes are being found all the time, and some speedrunners have used these glitches and routes on their regular speedruns. If anything, this goes to show that TASing is not purely theoretical, but that TASing techniques can work on the real console: The same glitches work there as well (assuming a human can pull them off, ie. they don't require frame perfection to trigger).

I must be as confused (or more) as FODA on this point, but are you saying it's absolutely impossible for a TAS to be replicated on an actual console?
If you hooked up a cable from your computer's USB port to your console's input port, and had it try to playback a movie you made, I'd say 99% of the time, it's not going to work, and you'll have it desync. In the rare event you do get it to sync, you'll probably never have it sync again on a future playback.

I actually thought the issue brought up a reverse problem for me: Should TASers be allowed to start with whatever uninitialized memory, entrophy, etc they want?
I believe this is allowed only in special cases, like a run using a mode only available after finishing the game at least once; an example of that is the Chrono Trigger New Game+ run.

ah, thanks for explaining that, now i'm starting to understand what TASing is all about. so, basically, the point of TASing was to show how it would look if JESUS would play video games? i always suspected TASing was based on christianity, because it was started by bisqwit who is a christian. you and bisqwit were secretly planning this from the very beginning when this website was created. bisqwit invented TASing to show the glory of god, so tasvideos is actually a secret religious organisation to get us reqruited into the religion of yahweh, oh my GOD!!!!!11

To point out the obvious, this is awesome. I'm hanging it on a wall. Next time I'm drunk I'm doing the same. But I digress - It being April 2nd, could someone please get that "The Site Is Closing blah blah" Armageddon shit off of the front page, OR at least succeed it with another news headline that says something like (keeping with the tone of Nach's related posts) "April Fool's, fuckers!" so newbies won't assume the site is about to go away and stop visiting, and so long-time members like Shinryuu won't throw themselves in front of a train ("private" thread page 6) ?
Oh, play it cool. Play it cool. Here come the space cops.

Seeing as I MISSED the whole thing, I'm kind of baffled. However, I would like to say this website made me a better programmer, a better beta tester, a better engineer, and a better etc. I was inspired by Adelikat's Tasvideos Youtube video, which also gave me my "superhuman" powers of controlling my adrenaline (just think of that song, and BAM! I'm hyper) I guess I'll go watch a TAS now (sigh) (not that I feel bad or anything)

Jesus wouldn't be playing console games. ;) Jesus would randomly pop up in some FPS Fatality is playing and frag him at random just to say "You're close, but you're not perfect!" ;) Or, the more obvious answer, Jesus would play SMB1 so well, it'd take several years before we could match the amount of frames he saved compared to the current run, and then find out he made it imperfect on purpose to spur us on and submits an even faster run. Jesus sucks compared to Segata Sanshiro. Segata Sanshiro reeks of so much gaming awesome that he can force a video game console to start from an emulators start state. He can also TAS a video game in real time.

TASVideos - what it would look like if Chuck Norris played videos games

I disagree, TASVideos is what it would look like if Segata Sanshiro tried to out compete Chuck Norris in a video game. The subsequent result is them constantly obsoleting each others runs, these events are known as frame wars.

TASVideos is what it would look like if Segata Sanshiro were playing against Teddy Roosevelt and competing for the love of David Bowie.

Nah, TASVideos is what it would look like if the South Koreans dropped Starcraft and started pro-teams focused on speedrunning instead.

I've never been more happy to be at the butt end of a massive joke :) I went into the thread thinking it was probably a joke, but the serious discussion that had been going on for a week convinced me that it probably wasn't. Good job, guys! I've been punk'd big time by two April Fools jokes this year. I have never contributed anything more productive than "if I was a TASer I'd run Kirby's Pinball Land" (and a little money and torrenting in the distant past, stuff I wish I could still do now), but I would be very unhappy to see TASvideos go.

This April Fools thing had me on pins and needles. I have been following the site for years and visit frequently. I don't contribute near as much as everyone else, but i would have been devastated if anything were to happen to the TAS community. Live long the world of speed!

Ah you. Don't make bad jokes like this even if it was april 1st. Though surprised and choked. But... that would be possible and I've almost believed that news on main page. It was hard to believe all the bullshits adelikat wrote. Though since I'm not really active here, anything could have happened. I've asked Baxter what's that bullshit, then he points me to this topic. But in the end, I guess if someday the admins get tired of tasvideos, they'll just give admin responsibilties to someone else like Bisqwit did 1 ½ years ago.

Segata Sanshiro plays so well he obsoletes every TAS with real-time speedruns.
