Rockman Exhaust TAS Played by aglasscage and woabclf23.

-Emulator: FCEUX 2.1.3
-Aims for fastest time
-Abuses programming errors
-Takes damage to save time
"What we have here is a game with custom levels, new music, and wait for it... bosses that don't attack in the way you remember from Mega Man 2. Take Quick Man for example. The little punk is actually invincible when he runs! Isn't that wonderful? And instead of force beams, his stage has these trippy-looking yellow zig-zag wires, but they still serve the same purpose as force beams; instant death. You can get this one from the hacker's site [dead link removed]" -GamingRocksOn.BlogSpot
Enjoy :)

klmz: Replaced movie file so that it doesn't begin with savestate.
FractalFusion: Judging.
FractalFusion: This hack doesn't seem to do well enough, as compared with the current state of MM2 hacking. I'm rejecting the run.

DrD2k9: Re-evaluating due to policy changes.
DrD2k9: We are no longer as restrictive on hacks as we once were; especially with the site moving more to a game-based navigation. While others more familiar with the game/hack may be able to see things that could be improved, this run appears well optimized to me.
Accepting.
Publication note: this syncs on FCEUX 2.6.6
fsvgm777: Processing. McBobX is handling the encodes for this one.

Two things:
  • This run begins from a savestate, which is usually not accepted at TASVideos.
  • Does this hack have anything over the published Rockman 2 hack, Rockman no Constancy? I don't think TASVideos wants multiple hacks of the same game published.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

assuming a hack is well received by the users and the run is well made, why does it hurt your community to have multiple hacks of the same game? i'm sorry about starting from a soft-reset. i came to understand tasvideos does not like movies beginning from soft-reset when we were near to finishing the run. i completely forgot about this until now. i think the difference is about 8 frames.

So it can be fixed up? Then do so and all will be fine about that.

Each hack must stand on its own merits. The publication of one movie does not preclude the publication of an additional movie.

There are 2 Super Mario Bros hacks and they are already published on the site, same for Sonic the Hedgehog. I wouldn't say "this is a bad hack so it can't be published since there is already one on the site". Besides, this is Rockman we are talking about. Even if you hack the game, it won't be that much different from the original. You choose a stage, you make it to a boss, you win, the end.

Well, arguably that kind of formula isn't applicable to Extra Mario Bros. It doesn't play like a typical Mario game at all (although it does play like some other NES platformers).

Are you sure this requires a savestate? I ran the FM2 file as-is in FCEUX 2.1.4a with no problems. Though I was a bit nonplussed to discover the hack author had apparently omitted the entire closing credits sequence.

Because there are more hacks of Mega Man than actual games for the NES (Same thing goes for SMB). And the site should'nt hold every single ROM hack in existence. Otherwise this would be HACKvideos.org.

If it's an entertaining run, I don't see why hacks shouldn't be accepted. Watch it before you make comments too...

Now that I think of it, can we please postpone the discussion of general hack merits until after all the vocal parties have seen the movie in question? That would be much appreciated.

He said just the well received hacks by the users, not every single ROM hack.

I just finished watching this, and it seems like this hack and this run are both more entertaining than Constancy. Unfortunately, I don't think this has enough additional entertainment value to deserve publishing alongside the other 8 NES Megaman runs on the site. This run doesn't seem to show any glitches or tricks that the Constancy run doesn't, so It feels largely redundant to publish them together (similar to the NES/GB Tetris issue). Long story short, I vote no for this being published alongside Constancy, but vote yes if it obsoletes it. Overall "meh" vote.

Well anyhoo, I'm voting yes because the Hack and TAS are both very well done.

Since no one else seems to be picking up on it, I'll encode this in SD losslessly.

I liked this. The music is not bad (I laughed at Wily 4, when the music was "Moskau" by Dschingis Kahn). The changes in the weapons seem pretty cool. The glitches look quite nice, such as beating the Wily 1 dragon without dying on it. In fact, the quality of play is very high, cleaner than previous runs on this Rockman 2 hacks. However, the stage design isn't as interesting as with Rockman No Constancy. I still think this is worth publishing alongside RNC, though. Yes vote.

I like this, so I'm gonna give it a yes. Having played a ton of Mega Man romhacks myself, I can safely say that Exhaust is one of the better. It has some great music (especially aforementioned chiptune rendition of Moskau), different weapon behaviour, boss behavious and boss weaknesses (too many hacks skip over these three), and overall solid stage design - with the esception of Flash Man. See the first beam in the fourth beam room? Not getting hit my that requires a nearly pixel-perfect jump off the platform. If you just walk and drop down, the beam hits you. The beginning of Wily 1 with the not seeing the spikes off to the right and having to Item-2 over there is pretty bad too. The Wily 4 boss deserves special mention, as it's one of the few times I've seen anything done with that boss beyond "destroy walls, destroy cannons" - but the other two I can think of merely axes the "destroy walls" part of it. Those two being Megaman Ultra and Deus Ex Machina. Speaking of which, Deus Ex Machina is a hack that deserves a TAS, as it's probably the best Rockman 2 ROM hack out there. It's made by the same guy who made No Constancy, and is as complete an overhaul as that one. Extra special credit to it for being the only Rockman 2 hack I have ever played that makes the Items not items, but special abilities for Mega Man - temporary invincibility, small jumps that can be made in air for hovering and a high jump, respectively.

I'd also like to see a TAS of DEM, well, an updated one. The current 28:00 one from 2008 by cstrakm: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2879398 But the hack I'd really like to see a full TAS of is Rockman-ABNormality, but I don't think it is completed yet.

Thanks for the links to Megaman Ultra, woabclf! I liked your run of that game. It feels like it could be improved a little, but it looks like a definite possibility for TASVideos, especially the Wily 2 bossfight. EDIT: Deus Ex Machina looks even better!
