Here I complete Super Mario Bros. without grabbing any coins.
  • In 1-1, I didn't use the warp pipe because I would have to grab the coins to get through it quickly.
  • In 4-2, I used the vine because if I used the alternate pipe glitch, I would have had to grab the coins at the beginning of the level.
  • In 8-1, I have to make the Goombas come walk towards me so that I can jump on them to avoid grabbing the coin just before the three piranha plants.
  • In 8-3, I didn't do the flagpole glitch because that would result in the time being 243 giving me fireworks.
Sorry if I didn't explain things well. This is my first submission.

FractalFusion: Good first submission, some_pickles. However, we have many branches for Super Mario Bros. already, and this run is too similar to a normal TAS, apart from the couple tricks it does, maybe another if going through the wall in 1-1 underground works. If there were many more places where the presence of coins forces a person to be creative, then that would be good.
I'm rejecting the run. Better luck on your next project.

Conditions like this work better, I think, if what is being omitted makes the game noticeably more difficult to complete. Stage-to-stage, few Mario titles actually become more difficult if you collect fewer coins in one level. That said, this run is not poorly made. The 8-1 Goomba stomp was interesting, but it's too bad there isn't a way to make them appear more quickly. That, and a walljump really should be possible there. Don't be discouraged if this run is rejected... it's been said before, but for a first submission, this is actually quite good. I hope you continue doing runs. Voting "meh" instead of a straight "no" out of respect for a good first effort.

Interesting goal but for a TAS with warps I do not feel it introduces enough difference compared to the "normal" warped run. However, it might be more interesting to see a warpless TAS that aims to get no coins. Voting no. Do not get discouraged by my no vote, you show some real talent. I am sure you can provide us with many awesome TASes in the future.

Too similar to the published run, and the goal is dumb in my opinion. Vote no.

Voting no due to arbitrary goal choice that adds little to the gameplay and/or difficulty. The TASing itself has been well done though, and I hope you'll continue making them.

I actually enjoyed 1-1, since you don't see that path taken often, and on the 8-1 Goomba jump. The rest of the run seemed too similar to the published warp run. Voting Meh for being entertained, just not enough to warrant a Yes
i see...

This ended up being more fun than I thought it would be. Little things ended up amusing me, like how no coin is collected, but Mario still jumps for almost every feasible powerup block that doesn't have coins. It's as if Mario is a psychic about knowing which blocks are safe or not... I don't get this same feeling from the current warp-full TAS. I'd be in favor of publishing this as a separate category. Although there are some technical issues, the quality seems high enough for publication. Also, people can then go work on obsoleting the movie.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Even with a simple goal, you would need more than just a "no coins" run to impress us. I do admit, it's a great effort you made. Meh is my vote.

Yes vote, I found it more entertaining than other SMB TASes myself. I'd like to see a warpless run like this more than a warp run though.
I am a figment of my imagination.

That may actually be an idea to consider, especially if it introduces significantly more places which require special maneuvering because of the no-coins restriction.

I agree with Warp about the warpless run. :D It also might be interesting to make it pipeless (except at the beginning of the underground levels), vineless, and powerup-less. I must also add that Some Pickles did a good job TASing this.

I don't know, that might go too much into the "arbitrary" side.

I am going to say no to this. While there are some neat tricks (1-2 warp zone trick), it's not that hard to not get any coins. Now, a Sonic run getting no Rings, that's an accomplishment as Sonic is faster then Mario. Don't feel discouraged and never TAS again. It's impressive, but I feel the goal isn't really a challenge.

I liked the run. I really did. I thought it was well executed and I almost didn't think it was possible. That said, I really had to vote meh, because the run is too similar to the any% run. The goal seemed a bit arbitrary and offers little that can't be seen in the any% and the warpless run.

You do realize on the underground in 1-1 you can go through the blocks? And BTW the pipe gllitch happens when you jump through something backwards, dislocating Mario from the center of the screen and confusing the game. And what do fireworks have to do with coins? The only reason for avoiding fireworks is to save in-game time However, I do like your goal for the game. All of the TASes other than the warped and warpless speedruns seem to be "minimum points". But you are going for "no coins", it is a more entertaining topic than "minimum points". Plus you don't have to wait for the time to go to zero. I'm sorry but I have to go with a NO. But I'll be excited for your future TASes.

Yeah, it was cute whenever Mario pretended to go for a coin but then shorted the jump.

Well done run with a couple of interesting parts, but the goal is too boring and similar to the "any%" to open a new category IMO, so voting no. How about a full game run that kills every enemy and gets every box/coin?? :D:D

After deliberating for a while I opted to vote No on this. Despite statements from some that call the goal choice arbitrary I'd say it's well defined, just misplaced - as Warp mentioned earlier there are too few places where the goal choice comes in to play. Additionally, there are some situations where frames could have potentially been saved (although that claim is as of yet unproven). Regarding making a coinless, warpless run I'd only vote Yes on it if there were ample opportunities to show off near coin collisions or creative solutions to getting through sections without collecting coins. I'd generally consider myself an inclusionist so long as the highest rated content is still sorted to the top. In other words I'd still like to see some way of sorting one-off runs that are entertaining albeit potentially redundant without cluttering the published movies page - not exactly a B-List, just "additional constraints" type runs. This is a tricky topic so I'll stop polluting this thread any further. :) Again, I encourage you to keep making runs. Best of luck, A.C. ******

Something that would be a killer TAS is a 100% kills TAS, if it's possible. What do you think?

My thoughts exactly. And if not in SMB, a similar goal might work brilliantly in some other game, and maybe a similar movie on another game already exists. The current play-through just doesn't cut it for me though, it's far too similar to the standard run and a fun trick and a half don't really justify a separate movie.

There are places for optimization in the video, as mentioned by others in the forum already. That being said, I kid you not, I was thinking about a Mario 1 coinless run earlier today then I go here and I see this! Whoa. I DO like the goal. There's plenty of arbitrary TAS goals, i don't know what all the fuss is about, it's perfectly fine. It's a meh, only because there can be improvements, but this can hold us over until then.

This goal is just to arbitrary to warrant publication. No Vote.
