What this run is
This is a 177 frames improvement for MarioSonicTASer's attempt on TASing this game. I inicially made a 121 frames improvement for the old submission as a proof of concept that the run wasn't very optimized and didn't think much of it. But recently i had curiosity of what a fully optimized run of this game would look like, so i started to work on it.
Techniques used
Lag reduction
- Jumping:
Jumping can sometimes cause 1f of lag, so its good to avoid jumping when that will happen.
- Badnicks:
The badnicks cause a imense amount of lag on the game so the ideal situation is to have as few as possible on screen, however killing them at the first possible frame can either get extra lag by jumping or get you on a bad positioning. I just tried jumping on a lot of different places to see which one was the fastest, while still giving me a good position.
Spring ignore
Normally on Sonic games you go up as soon as you touch a spring, but here this isnt the case. Touching it will do nothing unless Sonic is going down, so i use this to have better control of his position.
Level by level breakdown
Level 1
This is basically a sumarry of what i just said with better lag reduction than last time, though if you have good eyes you probably noticed that i didn't do a glitch i discovered to go under the level. Basically there is a badnick up there and if i go under the level there is no way of killing it, so i discovered that going up and killing the badnick is barely 2f faster with perfect movement.
Level 2
Most of the same, mosty just better lag reduction, but at the end i do another trick. Sonic deaccelarates only after touch the ground so i jump before beating the game so Sonic takes more time to lose all his speed and allows me to finish the movie earlier, saving around 20f.
That said, i still dont like how short this game is, but was a cool TASing experience nonetheless.
DrD2k9: Claiming for judging.
DrD2k9: Managed to save an additional 22 frames, partly by addressing the first enemy earlier and saving lag. Setting to "New" for a new judge. Also requesting co-authorship. Please update submission with this userfile.
Old on left, new on right:
Tegron: Claiming for judging.
Tegron: Change the file by 22 frames faster and add DrD2k9 as a co-author
That’s a pretty good TAS – so many optimisation moves to get through those two levels faster. Well done.
Accepted.
