Gee, Mario, I guess this really was a Kaizo Breeze.

  • Aims for fastest time

Comments

Keeping this extra short this time, which is unusual for me. I've been pretty burnt out on TASing since my last major project, tried a few things to get back into it but nothing was working. Tried this on a whim since I've always wanted to try Super Mario World but the base game runs are all extremely daunting, and it ended up being a great combination of fun, short, not having any RNG, and having nearly all of my ideas work without needing to hit the game with a hammer a hundred times to make it function again afterward!
This is a 1523 frame improvement to the published run, with 10 of the 12 levels redone and improved. The hack was updated since the original run was made, so here's the link to the original patch.
Quick note for SMW experts: This hack contains a patch that removes Mario's speed oscillation. Non-P speed caps and stays at 36 and P-speed caps and stays at 48, so there's no need for the hopping glitch anywhere in the run.

Stage by stage comments

Throw 'em Up

Better avoidance of the deletion fence things, item drops to keep more speed through the required block hits. Obtained P-speed at the end to avoid the forced wait. 295 frames saved, 295 total.

Koopas Sky

Obtained and kept P-speed throughout the level. 126 frames saved, 421 total.

Rhino Island

Minor optimization. 5 frames saved, 426 total.

Night of Splinters

More P-speed usage, better block hits, better wiggler jump. 172 frames saved, 598 total.

Nom Nom Forest

More P-speed usage, different Yoshi eating. 81 frames saved, 679 total.

Concrete Jungle

Kept the shell to avoid the forced Chargin' Chuck wait, more P-speed usage. 232 frames saved, 911 total.

Blue Mountain

Unchanged from published run.

The Magic Rock

Sure is more P-speed usage. 160 frames saved, 1071 total.

Moles Gone Wild

Unchanged from published run.

Rainbow Night

Obtained and kept P-speed throughout the level. 431 frames saved, 1502.

Star Speed

Minor optimization. 13 frames saved, 1515 total.

Forest Shell

Minor optimization. 8 frames saved, 1523 total.

Final Thoughts

I'm not an SMW expert by any stretch so this can absolutely be tightened further, but I'll leave that to guga or someone else who wants to try their hand. Still, this was fun, and it was nice to have fun TASing for the first time in a while!
Also, rest in peace to this alternate take on the final level that I like more but was 24 frames slower.

Frame 13666:

Challenger: Claiming for judging.
Challenger: Normally I decide the important step to a judging run in a matter of days, however...
I saw the previous run, the optimization looked fine to me even for a first official TAS to this hack, I approved it, and over a month later here comes another new TAS, this time done with the Herculean contribution from one of known veteran players for the community :)
If that run was submitted years ago, the old rules would have likely analyzed the game with doubts... and probably rejected it by showing a test movie with a timesaver or two that can be implemented to the candidate run if possible.
However, as a person who is present in the community for a long time, and since the rules received improvements in last four years, the game got some luck to be submitted at the right time.
Returning to the actual submission: I have no words to describe except the fact this game now looks quite polished and showing quality optimization in every way!
Because the gameplay in this hack is very flexible just by removing that speed oscilation mechanic, much better than I expected.
At last, glad you have fun with this project after all, Samsara! I'm proud to say that this run is getting my instant approval ;)
