I really think it will take only about minutes more.

Well probably so. I think you did boss 6 (sword) faster then JXQ there muncher :) But are you able to get UFO? Cos the double-star is much stronger (although I don't know the strength of the 4th and subsequent Mikes).

You can get ufo in the third boss battle by inhaling the two stars from the sun at once.

I've come back to Kirby's Adventure after getting very annoyed with the other game I was working on. I tried lots of times to do better or equal to the published run, but I just couldn't. I am about 700 frames behind by the end of the second world. Is that okay? The movie so far is here, if anyone wants to watch it.

That movie only plays the first world for me. Do you have Excel? I have a spreadsheet here I put together that could help you. The values on the list are the first frame the screen is completely black for each door entered. As you enter values in the column next to it, the green columns will indicate how much time you've gained or lost in that room. Entering these values as you do the run can help you pinpoint where you might be having problems along the way. I filled in the first world for you, you're only 223 frames behind, not 700. Here's some tips that might help:
  • Change direction as little as possible. Every time you change direction, you pause for a couple frames (unless you're charging a shot). So if you need to go down diagonally, then down some more, do the diagonal all at once, and the down all at once, don't zig-zag unless you need to.
  • Move as little as you need to. If you have to navigate a corridor with several twists in it, think of having a string from the entrance to the exit, and pull it as tight as you can. Try to follow that path, when the UFO ability allows it.
  • Avoid using anything but the laser if you can. The beam obviously causes lag, but the single star can also do this (though not to the same extreme). There are some cases where a single star will still save time due to its slower speed - you can shoot it and let it hit an enemy later while you're charging up lasers to fire at the same time.
  • Enemies that don't move in ways you don't want them to can be manipulated by trying stuff differently at an earlier point, or perhaps entering the door in the previous room just a bit later. Spark and fire guys that do their attacks can cause lots of lag.

It should go all the way to the to the end of the second world, but ther is probably something wrong. Why did you have to make such a good run? Now I can't do my 100% as easily. Oh, I almost forgot this: Thanks for the spreadsheet.

The first world is now completed, and it is 8 frames faster than the current run. Really there are 41 frames less than the run, but I lost a total of 33 frames in various places that I just couldn't fix. I just watched it, and there was a desync right near the start. Is there any way to fix this? I don't really want to do it all over again.

I'm getting a desync pretty quickly, on FCEU 0.98.16. Edit: Oh you noticed too. I'm not sure what would have caused the desync, but if you play your movie, and load one of your good savestates like you were to continue recording, that could fix the movie.

I already tried that a few times.

I looked at both of your fcm files and I really can't find anything that looks like it might be pieceable together. If you can redo that very first room and get it to fade out on the exact same frame (hopefully that's written down?), I can try to take the rest of your newer movie and hex-edit it onto the end, and hope for the best. Looks like it happened somewhere from 1332-1339. (I love Bisqwit's FCM Parser. I do not love FCM.)

Try playing with a different fceu... you never know. Hexediting will work only for a short amount of time. The random generator _will_ catch up with you eventually.

I tried making it fade out on the same frame, and the fcm is here. Kirby!

Okay then, I guess the whole thing needs redoing.

I couldn't get it to sync either. Sorry dude :( Not that it's fun to hear, but it's good to make backups and test them occasionally (after every level or couple levels) to avoid this kind of thing. Anyway, 8 frames faster, way to go! If you've got your numbers written down from last time, you can refer to them and maybe gain even more time on me.

Kirby is a very micro-managing game to do. It's sometimes annoying how one move is faster in one situation while slower in the next. There's so much inconsistency...

I still have the numbers from last time. By the way, you know the vertical section in level 4, where you do all this jumping through platforms? I go striaght up and I beat you by 2 frames. It's strange that you didn't test the easier way first. I just noticed a score counter at the bottom of the screen. This is probably the worst idea ever, but how about a highest possible score run?

Respawning enemies for teh win? Well asuming you still aim for speed, it still sounds like a bad idea to me indeed. Sorry... Perhaps you could focus your enthousiasm on another game. I know what it's like to lose a wip where you've literally fought for frames.

I did, must have been differing lag.

Hey Kirbymuncher, any progress updates for this game?

I've stopped working on it, probably for a long time, as I'm doing Pokemon Sapphire. Any one who wants to take over can, but they have to start from scratch since mine desynchs.

Almost a 3 year bump... Me and 4matsy were theorizing about getting 256 Crashes, using the same method for getting 256 Mikes. To do this, I went against the Tree Boss and repeatedly used Select to drop Crash while I damage him with apples. However, the final bit is just a sliver from possible because any stars around shatter after defeating a boss, so I had to be on the far left side, fire the last apple without hitting the Crash star, then have the star right in front of you to swallow (actually, you can only get it in as far as Kirby's mouth), and this leaves about a 5 frame window. So after the Star Rod fires out, you can swallow the Crash and try the glitch, but unlike Mike, Crash doesn't have a little hop, nor a countdown (Crash goes from 1 to not having it, instead of 0), so it's impossible to roll over to 256, since 1 is the only possible number it can be and it never increases or decreases. But at least my efforts weren't all for naught. If you press B as soon as you touch the Star Rod (3 frame window), you can get an image of Kirby in a Cannon for about 2 frames. EDIT: Now this is ironic. As a kid, I always had the French version, so I didn't think of this as a big deal, but BagOfMagicFood just showed me that Cannon is not in the English version. Neat! EDIT 2: There isn't supposed to be a Cannon panel in the Japanese version either, but I beg to differ. =) EDIT 3: WOW! When doing the Cannon trick in the Japanese version, Kirby does a crazy warp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbBF0hw4Nso

So the "Cannon" status appears, even on the English version, even though it never appears during ordinary gameplay? Or does the English version simply go straight from Crash to Clear?

Neither of them have the Cannon in ordinary play, but the panel IS in the game, just as a leftover.
