Yes, the Wii station and games are region-locked.

the Wii console supports region locking technology. But it's up to each publisher/developer to decide if their game will be locked or not. Last i heard, all games made by nintendo are going to be region free.

the wii isn't out in germany so far :(( i have to wait till the 8.12 .. but i still don't know if its worth a buy because the up comming zelda also comes out for the gamecube - i dont have really much infos about the differences between the GC/wii version of the new zelda(expect the controller features) maybe you know some and can give them to me :) ps: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ljZOHnZNaBc ;D

logging in? lame! ahwell, next to the fact that i've got all the nintendo's, the wii sounds as much a great console as the DS (which, imo, was a great succes). So I'm really looking forward to it. It might actually be the first console I'm buying new (where-as I usually buy second hand = cheaper and more games at start). But like Germany, we have to wait till december.

P.S. the backwards compatibility on the GC is fucking wicked! I just tested it out with Metroid Prime for kicks, and it worked flawlessly Nice work Nintendo!

Well, I didn't really expect anything else. GB/C worked properly on GBA, GBA worked properly on DS (ok, it contains the GBA CPU, but still :) and imo nintendo has shown to be capable of doing this :) Although, their zelda-bonus-pack for the cube was a little borked. It seemed impossible to select items in the item window of the NES-zeldas. But that's emulation, this is more hardware. I think. I'll shut up now :p

so far the most challenging/rewarding game for training yourself on the wiimote/nunchuck is trauma center. the comment about how human hands shake really comes to the forefront when playing this title, much more so than zelda or wii sports, though i suppose monkey ball banana blitz is comparable. as far as zelda goes, (don't worry, this isn't a spoiler), i would have to say that the control scheme is brilliant, after about 30 minutes in, i felt more comfortable controlling link than i ever did on the gc titles.. anyways, bottomline, i'm really impressed with the wii so far, and the sheer potential for innovative titles in the future is staggering. i would recommend one of these consoles to any gamer, and no, i don't work for nintendo ;)

My friend had the Wii and showed it to me, Zelda Twilight Princess was simply breathtaking. And apparently a long game too, he said initial testers took when speedrunning 70 hours. However, all of the Z movements are no longer as fast as in OoT and MM, however backflipping and actually rolling is nice. TP is actually so huge, which is a good thing because there are hours and hours to be had in the game, with all sorts of new stuff. graphics, gameplay, it's all good. However, it's advised to play Windwaker before TP, because there's plot stuff that you need to see after MM and OoT.

Z movements were already slowed down in WW. The one grudge I have against Zelda TP is tht after giving us so much camera control in WW with the C-stick, it was taken away again and now it's back to oldschool-aim-camera-by-facing-somewhere-and-hitting-Z. It's too bad nintendo doesn't have an optional controller with a second analog stick, but I still love the freedom of movement of the wiimote/nunchuck anyway. and having your hands farther apart feels more natural, and is part of what I like about PC mouse+keyboard.

gametrailers.com has a video where they attempt to arrange all the Zelda games in chronological order, and end up creating a split timeline after OoT, which actually seems to be the official canon according to Nintendo.

All games are region locked, but i'm sure there will be a software hack to change that, just like what happened to the gamecube. Something interesting, Mario 64 on Wii is 20.1056976 megabytes large. And of course, the rom is exactly 8 megabytes.. wonder what's up with that.

I gots me onez. I posted this in other forums as well. But you can enjoy the short reviews i give. Their are no storyline spoilers. .. and i gotta say wow. Its so intuative. I bought the 5 games that would best reflet the use of the wiimote and nunchuk. Red Steel (FPS) Exitetruck (arcade Racer) Super Monkey Ball ( party game ) Madden 07 (das footen ballen) Zelda (pwnsause) Red Steel was the first game i played. (wii sports was techincly first, but it was free with the console and more of a training tool/game then full fledged game.) It took all of 5 minutes to get used to actualy aiming the wiimote at the screen, and about a whole level to get used to actualy aiming. You can zoom by pushing the wiimote towards the TV also. I found myself really engaged in the game. While Red Steel isnt the best FPS i've played, its definalty a good example of how FPS will rock on the WII. Best part for me was they didnt have a prompt of how to reload for awhile in the "tutorial beining level" But i was like, "i'll spin the nunchuk" sure enough BAM it reloaded. Next, Excitetruck. Again, i found myself resorting to convention when trying to steer through the tutorials. But its a fun fast racer with alot to do stunt wise in it. Tilting the controller left right foward and back took about 10 minutes to get used to, and even then i sometimes found myself trying to steer with the D-pad (which is turbo, and my truck went KABOOM a few times) As for the actual console and its menus', point and click interfaces. Creating a Mii is fun and easy. I couldnt imagine doing it with a normal controller. Typing out names is also alot easier. Madden: The controls are awsome. Passing is instictive and running is even more so. Tackles are fun too. You can do 3 differnent strengths of tackles. Two involve "wiimotion" in which you thrust both Mote and Chuk forward. Add a button to it to get a "big hit". Both have a better chance of causing a fumble, pushing the Offence back, and even injury. (i broke the RB's hand with my 2nd big hit, and caused a fumble) It took about 2, 4min quarters to get used to offence, a full game before i got the hang on D. Monkey Ball: Monkey ball was made for a tilt controller. I'm sure when the Wii concept was announced, the monkey ball people went crazy. Its intuative, like almost all wiimote controls. Single player has 80 levels, plus bosses and bonus levels. They also have 50! minigames such as monkey race and such. Many of them use wiimotion exclusivly. Its worthy to note, that most games are Mote only, but there are some games witch require Chuks. I havent played them all yet, but the ones i've played all repsond pretty well. Seeing this game makes me urn for mario party 8 even more. ZELDA!!! I'm about 2 hours in, and the storyline did kick in for me. But the controls....they work. It took almost all that time to get used to the controls. Swinging the Mote activates sword slashes. Small flicks of the writst do it for me just fine. Z-targeting works just like it has for the past 3 games. Did i mention the game looks awsome? I wont spoil anything story -wise, but its definatly got me engaged in the story right from where it kicked off. I went to the Wii Shop Channel to get a VC game. Most the launch titles are old NES Games and a few good games. (altered beast, sonic, Mario 64) i noticed in each games decription it tells you what controllers you can use. (nes games can use the wiimote on it side, while N64 games require Cube or Vc controllers.) in this menu i confermined that each game that is VC controller compatable, is also GC controller compatable. Good for anyone who has 4 GC controllers. (although VC controllers are a measly 20 bucks and the cord for it plugs into the wiimote for a better cordless experience.) I bought the only good NES Game, Zelda, and beat the first dungeon. if i didnt know better i'd swear i was playing the NES. It even features the same lag spots as the original.

The games do have regions (NTSC..PAL), but the games aren't the device that restricts playback, the Wii itself is. The Wii won't play a different type of region (NOT talking standard dvd regions, just ntsc, ntsc-j and pal!) If the games didn't have regions, NTSC-J Twilight Princess would only have the language altered and would work on NA Wii but it doesn't. The only technical difference between NTSC-US and NTSC-J is a slight change in brightness. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTSC-J

Last I heard each game comes with the emulator required to play it. Also the images are encrypted for each console, so that probably increases the file size by a smidgen as well.

..they are! A simple language change could not make the system say the disc is unreadable. That means the first sector on the disc likely holds code to prevent the Wii from reading the data. The security must be different when processing the dvd for each region.. nothing in the actual data part of the dvd could stop the Wii from recognizing it.
