Slow motion, frame advance, rewind, rerecording, export to x264/xvid/lossless? In an official release? Is there any reason this shouldn't become the standard for SNES movies from now on? Great stuff.

I've made a couple of movies with it. Nothing extensive (meaning, nothing beyond 30 seconds), but what I did test worked great. I thought frame advance was messed up until I realized I had frame skip set to 9.
What?! That's the best feature!

You're both right. It's a nice feature, but not for me. I'm removing it, and it's gonna look like what it looked like before. None of the settings are appropriate for publications.
But I still wish to complain about netplay. I know they want to improve the protocol, and it was previously desync happy. But if they have working rerecording without desync, why isn't netplay sync stable? Or is there more to it?
No no no no. I need to give my own parameters to mencoder. My mencoder has a funny name and has more parameters than the real mencoder has. Plus I don't make lossless AVIs. None of the settings are appriate. Ergo, Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment to the code, replace it with my own.
It's a bit inappropraite for arguing over on the forum.
Examples of parameters: an estimate to the movie's length so mencoder can provide an ETA and project file size, a subtitle file, subtitle repositioning/resizing, video filters, audio quality tampering.
Other desirable features: for automation, zsnes should boot up in movie replay mode and automatically stop after a fixed duration. Parameters between passes vary a little bit. Which version of mencoder might change if I'm doing something dirty with mencoder's source code.
I prefer being the one in control. zsnes does not give that to me, and if there's one thing I can't stand, it's software that things it's smarter than I am.
I've never had major desync problems with ZSNES (in fact, it was one of the best netplay emulators out there, everything else would desync often and take the game with it)..
But yeah, nice to know they had to remove the whole damn thing while they "improve it".
That's why I keep 1.42 (and 1.3whatever for Tetris Attack) around, I guess.

This confuses me.
Also, off-topic: how would I do hard subs in Linux?

I can't change savestates, and it crashed when I tried to rewind after I accidently saved over my one savestate while recording. :(
I'd appreciate more details.

There's a config file for a reason, encoding parameters are fully configurable via zmovie.cfg located in ~/.zsnes in SDL port or ZSNES executable directory elsewhere.

You should look at the parameters next time. That exists.
Raw movie dumping also exists.
I wanted to add some multipass settings, and a duration setting but didn't get a chance too. If anyone wants to send me some patches I'll take a look at them.

This is really awesome news, I hope we see more movies using ZSNES since its emulation is much better then snes9x.
All I can find right now is Saturns movies anyone know any others?

A bunch are posted from time to time on the ZSNES board. There's also an archive up on Zophar's.

1.50 really doesn't have a "read-only toggle" hotkey or am I a failure at finding it? Read-only saves so much time while TASing that it's practically required. Everything else looks great though.
actually,
- the on-screen messages should be updated even if the emulator is paused (picked savestate slot, save/load, speed changes, etc)
- the current emulated speed should be shown when changed
- and a read-only toggle hotkey would be good.
