This is a speedrun of Jurassic Park 3: Island Attack. The game is based on the movie Jurassic Park 3. The premise is of a guy on an island with dinosaurs. He has to run to the island’s port. His only weapon is a flare gun, which he uses to shoot conveniently placed boxes full of explosives. Every level has some sort of boss, in either the form of a large, difficult enemy, multiple small enemies, or a puzzle that must be solved. One feature of the game is that things are accessed by rapidly pressing B, which makes ready fodder for 30 hertz button pressing.
Emulator options: up+down, left+right not allowed. No frameskip.
Any % run, takes damage to save time. Collects minimal amount of items.
Stage 1 Unfortunately, this stage has a lot of dialog. There is almost no action in the first minute or so. Note the jumping to get away from the Spinosaurus (The giant one with a sail). This is a movement glitch of sorts which lets you move further during the cut scene. Later, note the way he barely misses those dinosaurs that run past him. Normally, you have to stop to miss those. But not this time!
Finally, there’s some box-opening. Normally it takes several seconds of tapping B to open one of those. But with TAS, the bar just zooms. As for the Velociraptor, it is faster to shoot it before the box because otherwise you have to lure it away to hit the box first. So it’s fastest to hit the raptor first. Note the jump on the gunpowder box just after, which is important for shifting over slightly to the side without wasting time.
It’s tricky to get past the raptors in a way that lets you access the door. Even at super-high B button speeds, you can’t just run between the dinosaurs and through the door.
The boss is interesting. I deliberately made the character walk around nonchalantly because it looks more interesting to my eye than random running. The position where you are when you shoot the gunpowder box doesn’t matter, because you can just shoot earlier when standing further away. On a weird note, the last input in level 1 is at frame 13666.
Stage 2 Note the way he jumps onto a box of gunpowder and over the obstacle. Normally, you have to shove a box over to get onto that. But this is much quicker.
The boss fight is very annoying. Because of a movement glitch, you cannot run while the electricity is zapping. Since you need to make 15 hits to kill the bosses, it’s one of the longest boss-killing sequences in the game.
Stage 3 This is a level where the screen is scrolling sideways constantly. As anyone who has seen the Super Mario 3 TAS, these make for a lot of fun. I tried to take out every enemy there was. Strangely, some cannot be hit without taking damage. There are many necessary jumps you must make. On these, I try to do some fancy manoeuvres. There are some puddles of sludge, which you must “zoom” over. At one point, I leap right over a huge gap then a puddle of sludge. This level easily has the most hits, with 65 hits.
Stage 4 He has to wait a couple frames before bashing the crate; otherwise the Pachycephalosaurus will charge into the guy and hurt him, slowing him down. Then there’s catching the tree with the wire. THAT took about 200 rerecords. Many places are annoying in this level because they were meant to go through at lower speeds. That, of course, is unacceptable. The timing all has to be very precise, and even then, there are some points where the guy can’t make landings. There is no variation in his jump height. At some points, the “hit checking” is ludicrously bad. I deliberately show off the bad hit checks and go right through a raptor. Finally, there’s the “boss”, which has a little glitch where no wind-up lets it smash the rock just as hard. So I just get him to constantly whack the rock. Shooting the dinosaur with the flare gun is sometimes faster, sometimes slower than letting it turn. This level took less than 2 minutes to beat, and I am pretty proud of that! Where did those hits come from? They’re the dinosaurs that fell into holes chasing me.
Stage 5 That shortcut through the door is not an intended feature. Yes, it is necessary to get hit twice. Otherwise you get killed while opening the door. I went 140 rerecords trying to get it optimized. Thanks to the massive shortcut, the level is the only one to be beaten in less than 1 minute.
Stage 6 This level is another annoying side-scroller. There are vines that must be climbed, a slow process. This makes it annoying to TAS. Then there are falling rocks, which are even more annoying. The boss fight is rather interesting, though. After that, you have to parachute down the mountain. There is no way to hurt the pterosaurs, so I just avoid them. This level is the first over 3 minutes and infuriatingly close to being under that boundary.
Stage 7 This level involves running through with reckless disregard. I have nothing much to say. Although, I must point out that the splashes in the water cause a lot of lag. Then there’s the boss fight, which is hilariously fast. Normally it takes several minutes, but this takes seconds. I made a couple mistakes in the first run-through, so I redid about half the level, saving 5 ¼ seconds.
Stage 8 To meet my time goal of 30 minutes, this level became a frenzy to complete within that barrier. Beyond the first minute, this level is a compilation of the game’s bosses. This is like a “flashback” to the boss pwnage from earlier levels. Some details on the bosses: First boss: This is pretty easy. It’s actually impossible to take out the packs of Compsognathus in one shot, so I let a rock fall onto some, crushing them. Second boss: Like the original T. Rex boss, this one walks into the explosions. Third boss: This fight can be skipped. Final boss: This is just running away from the Spinosaurus. Nothing to it.

Truncated: Less than lukewarm reception from the viewers, and I agree with them. This game doesn't have much going for it. Two autoscrollers, slow and long bossfights, little in the way of action. (I find it ludicrous that there are hundreds of crates of gunpowder littered about, even falling from the sky at convenient times, but no weapons whatsoever to use with those weapons.)
Because I do not think it makes an interesting movie, I will reject this run.

I'm having trouble watching this movie... I can't get past the "Press Start" screen. I'm using VBA version 19.3, and I have the right ROM. I didn't fiddle with any options, so basically I just booted up the emulator and played the movie. Are there some special settings I should check or something before watching this movie? If it helps, here are some details on my settings when I tried playing this movie: Record options: From Power-on. Game system: Game Boy Advance. Bios settings: Emulator's BIOS. Has anyone else encountered this problem? EDIT: Oh, and I also had "Allow left+right/up+down" unchecked, and no frame-skip, so I did read the comments before posting. ;)

That hasn't happened to me... When someone else gets it, they should say if it happens to them, too. Anyone know any causes and fixes for this problem? Every dialog-clearing button press in the movie is optimised, so I suppose going off by one frame anywhere could cause problems.

The movie worked fine for me. It seemed well played and pretty nicely done, though there was a point where a velicoraptor knocked you off a door twice and you carried on like nothing happened. If there's any fast way to keep the raptor from hitting you, it would've been much nicer looking to do that instead. Nothing else in the movie that looked less than perfect that I could tell, but I don't think I can give this better than "meh:" the game just wasn't very interesting. The boss fights were fast-forward fodder like crazy, and I don't think they could really be done any better. Uncontrollably boring and repetitive. The 2D platform levels didn't amaze me all that much either, but the levels inside buildings were better. They showed good planning and execution. But MAN the T-Rex head battles and the battle with all of those poison-spitters having to be shocked in a pool hit with electricity...

In the comments for stage 5, it says "Yes, it is necessary to get hit twice". There is another method, which is opening a nearby box with a tranquilizer gun, but it takes longer because it's the first time getting it and it says a whole bunch of stuff about using it, etc. The "red raptor" is programmed so it can hit you just after you get hit, but after 2 consecutive hits it won't attack. The reason it's like that is so you can't take the shortcut. Tee hee hee. The boss fights are a little boring, I admit. You know the glitch in some games where pausing can cause invincibility timers to run out and enemies to take multiple hits? I'll have to try that.

I'm starting to doubt that I have the respect of people here. Is it too much to ask that you download a ROM and watch a 30-minute movie? I've watched other videos skip past me on the publication queue and no one has even voted for any of my submissions.

I can't find a copy of this ROM that doesn't have a retarded hacked introduction screen. If I do, though, I'll watch/vote. If you want attention to be drawn to your runs, I would suggest that you don't run obscure titles. e: Watched the run. This is the classic case of a bad game played well. There was nothing that was actually intriguing about the run as a whole, save for a few very short segments (like trapping the red velociraptor). Everything else was pretty timid and disposable. Giving this a Meh vote. I hate to ask, but did you use Frame Advance to make this?

>I've watched other videos skip past me on the publication queue Don't think of it as a queue (even if it was once called this), it's more like a list. Some games are much easier to judge than others, especially if they have already published versions before them. >... and no one has even voted for any of my submissions. This is exactly the reason why other games were judged faster: they had more feedback and people wanted to see them published. It's not true that noone has voted for your submissions, even though they have received few votes. I'm sorry if this comes across as harsh.

Well it is harsh. You should uplift these neglected runs, not put them down in a vicious cycle!

"did you use Frame Advance to make this?" Yes, I did! I know you must be thinking of the parts where he didn't immediately start running. This is because the game has a retarded engine, and it takes a while after a screen comes up to start running. The boss fights for level 1 and 2 are annoying, I admit. But I think the other levels are good. Every button press in this run is frame optimized, as far as I can tell.

Just so you know, now that I've finally found a good source for GBA ROMs, I'll watch your movie and leave feedback as soon as possible. Edit: I thought I had a good source for GBA ROMs, but now I know what Zurreco meant by "a retarded hacked introduction screen". My ROM actually gave me this message:
Remember: true sceners [sic] don't care about CRCs and untouched dumps. Those that do can **** off and die!
Notwithstanding the fact that "sceners" isn't even a word, that's just retarded.

The scene in question is The Scene. I know, that's a good name. %)

OK. A "scener" is colloquial for a member of "The Scene", basically meaning the warez/pirating scene. Got it. And thanks for educating me... again! : ) I still think that these so-called "cracktros" on the GBA ROMs are just idiotic! OK, Chamale, about your run... I honestly think that you have the skills to be a very good TAS runner. The major problem with this submission is the same as in the Tom and Jerry run: poor game selection. I don't intend to discredit the amount of work that you put into this -- I can see that you took the time to do everything right -- but the end result is the same: a movie that's uninteresting, repetitive, and, for a good deal of the time, indistinguishable from unassisted play. So I'm going to vote NO. Please don't take this as a rejection of you as a runner. You could probably be a TASVideos superstar with a good choice of game. I mean that.

See, I really hate to illegally download ROMs. Every game I've made a run of, or that I'm working on, I own or did own. I did once own an NES with Super Mario Bros 1 and 2, and I heard of a couple glitches that can speed up a run, but I can't find any good ROMs. I'm working on the Pokemon Red speedrun, which is an interesting area to be in, but I still don't like to download illegal ROMs. I suppose I will soon, after the Pokemon Speedrun, and if the cops ever come into my house, I'll argue that I only use the ROMs for making TASes. lol.

Nah, just find an exciting game, purchase it, and dump the ROM yourself! ; P

I've heard you're more likely to roll over in your sleep, fall out of bed, and die from impact than get busted for downloading ROMs. I'm not too worried, really.

What about winning the lottery, getting struck by lightning, dying from a falling coconut, or being eaten by a grue? : )

Actually, this isn't illegal at all if you consider GBA to be obsolete (but not yet I don't think, it's still being produced). Check out section 2 here http://www.copyright.gov/1201/ and being in canada would pretty protect you anyway as there are no concrete laws involving this.

Wow!!! Nice find!!! Although the GameBoy Advance is still "reasonably available in the commercial marketplace"...

It's just way too annoying trying to find the correct Rom Version for this game. I'll just have to wait to see if it ever gets published. Not looking possible at this point..

How about that? I'm the first YES Vote, hehe. :3 I personally think the run is well done. SO I gave it a yes vote. ;3

Sweet... It's legal! @ Deep Loner: 1000 people are arrested or sued for downloading music or ROMs in the US, each year. Coconut deaths are surprisingly rare, contrary to popular belief. Only 1-5 a year. If every state has a state lottery once a week, then that's 2600 jackpot winners. 400 people are struck by lightning in the US each year. A quarter die. You are likely to be eaten by a grue, provided A) It is pitch black B) There are no graphics, only text. When these conditions are met, you have a 99.69105% chance of being eaten by a grue.

How many of these people download music and how many download ROMs?
