Post subject: Donations to drive emulator re-record capabilities

Has anyone here considering doing a funding/donation drive to try to convince resident programmers to take on emulators that they might not ordinarily tackle? Obviously this wouldn't be large sums to totally pay the way, but sometimes a few small donations can add up to just that little bit of extra motivation. Any thoughts on this?

Sounds like a plan, I think people would like to donate to this.

I was thinking we'd get together a very short list of consoles/emus which notably lack recording support and go from there. They would have to be emus with source code available, and the conditions of getting the donations, however meager, would be that they pass muster for rerecording for this site, barring a couple conditions that could be negotiated like ROM size. Maybe polishing Final Burn Alpha enough for it to be approved, or modifying Hugo enough to start posting HuCard TG-16 runs on the site. I'm sure there are dozens of other projects that would also quality. RAINE maybe (if source is available) for some arcade games. I understand from reading in the forums that MAME would be a whole other can of worms so maybe there are other arcade capable emus we could use to work around that.

Isn't the current state of emulation for those platforms, in general, just WAY too immature at present?

Yes, PSX discs are difficult to emulate as performance can differ across consoles. That is extremely annoying as imo the PSX offers infinitely more TASing opportunities than the N64 does. DS emulation is low at the moment because it is still a relatively new console, but I think it can be emulated fairly easily. Top screen can be played normally and the touch screen can be emulated by co-ordinates or something like that.

Right, and what's even more delightful, it progresses fast. Using the touchscreen in a TAS would be much easier than doing the same with analog sticks, since you can just point the mouse to the pixel you want and have the mouse button autoheld at frame advance. Besides, since DeSmuME is open-source, anyone knowledged enough can start improving it now.

While I'd personally love it if that were to happen, I still think its too early for it. Not only is the emulation still lacking in some respects, many games still dont work properly (nsmb for example crashes after about 5 seconds before you even start playing, when it gets to the 'sup sram' part, where it previously just went 'oh hey, no sram' and displayed a 'you can't play the game' message). Also, the emulation speed is as slow as a snail, playing with frame advance would probably still lag somewhat (now with audio). Still, who knows how things will turn out.

Well, I meant not only adding the rerecording capabilities (they may indeed wait a bit, until the emulation is fairly stable), but literally anything a good emulator should have.

I'm going to donate 100$ for a decent MAME with rerecording.

10$ to anyone who makes an NES, GBA or SNES emulator for Mac with savestates, rerecording and frame advance. 30$ for same, but for N64.

I was just thinking of that topic. If everybody on this site could donate 10$, I am pretty sure there will be more volunteer.

Wow. $10. The coders are jumping for joy right now!

Sadly, few of us here have deep pockets, but if people agree on a common bounty and we collect many small donations toward it, we might get enough to influence someone.

PSX emulator with re-recording would be nice. Same with Xbox. Ninja Gaiden Black would be nice on a TAS. I would gladly donate $$$ to boost up the possibility of future emu's.
