There must be a middle path between warpless and using all warps, that could be used to get closer completion times in all games.
No.

Here's a demo of the 1st level of super mario bros. and super mario bros. 2j played at the same time I didn't go down that pipe so that they end at roughly the same time.

Bah. All 4 is perfectly feasible, you just need to be freakishly smart. Many people here are freakishly smart. I might work on it if I can find a good dump ROM for SMB1. On a completely unrelated note, it would be fascinating to discuss the strange weather lately. My email address is chamale_ic@hotmail.com

would it be totally necessary to take every warp? maybe we could find some combination of warps that makes the games end around the same time.

Well, keep in mind that the shorter games will have a lot of walking into walls and even death in them. SMB3 will be like a well-oiled machine, but the other games will suck. So they will be much, much longer. In fact, expect to see several deaths in every game except SMB3.

I just realised that playing that movie file with smb2j doesn't work, use the smb2j movie file instead now http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5398/Super%20Mario%20Bros.%202%20%28J%29.fcm (this also works with smb1)

Ahh, I'm getting a little tired of multiple runs done. I mean, the X/X2 idea was creative and original. now its not. I mean like, its ok to watch 2 games done at the same time, its easy to keep track of. but 4 can be a mess. Same thing with the megaman quad run. It's too hard to watch all 4 vids doing the same thing. sometimes they dont. IMO, I dont like the idea, sorry.

Not everyone needs to like it. Many a published movie has a fairly high amount of "no" votes. I had a thought which would bring completion times closer together, though it wouldn't be extremely entertaining: Make it so while entering levels in SMB3, "start" is pressed. Basically, the other 3 games are paused during parts that require a lot of precision. Much of the progress in other games would be made in what are auto-scrollers in SMB3, because it'll be just screen-dragging as the necessary jumps are made.

I would not vote yes to a run that did that.

Agreed. The way I see it, the runs either come together or they dont, and pausing a game while another game is running is, IMO, cheating the challenge. I see what you are saying, and the problems autoscrollers cause, but thats why these runs are challenging, it makes the runner come up with new strategies or whatever that are to awe and amaze all viewers... and pausing doesnt amaze me :P

After finding out just how insanely hard a quad run is, i believe i have a new found respect for the megaman quad run. This run is waaay out of my league. I know some of the tricks, but it just doesnt seem to matter. I am dropping this run, anyone who wants to give it a shot, be my guest. But be warned, its insanely hard.

Giving it a shot, here I come! My completion time goal is 12:00. I figure SMB will be about 6 minutes, SMB2j maybe 9, SMB2 about 10 (because boss-fighting won't be too optimal).

Are you gonna be attempting to do SMB3 as well, or leave that out?

So what do you plan to do with the 6 minutes of down time in smb? Expect us to stare at a blank title screen? Maybe you'd want to complete some more levels instead.

i had a solution for that before if you read it, just play through smb a second time for hard mode.

I'm having some troubles with FCEU 0.98.16, which I installed for this run. One problem is that I get "error 22" when I run Super Mario 2 (J).fds. The disksys.rom file is on the desktop, as is the FCEU icon. Another problem is that it won't display the current frame. How do you turn that on? I've been thinking about route. One thought which strikes me is to only use 1 warp in SMB.

How big is your disksys.rom, it's supposed to be 8.00 KB (8,192 bytes). Also you want it in the same folder as fceu, not just the shortcut

FCEU doesn't know where you place its icons, it's supposed to work the opposite way. Hence you should put the ROM together with the executable.

Umm, dot (".")? I thought it was the same in any emulator, except maybe Mupen.

(moozooh beat me to it. and yes, mupen automatically displays input and frame counter.) You also might want to be a little careful with smb2 FDS.... when doing LoZ FDS I ran into some problems where the FDS ROM was not deleting the SRAM correctly, meaning I had to delete it every time I wanted to watch from the beginning or start recording. Just a little thing to watch out for.

Well, I'm doing OK... So far I'm at early 1-2 in SMB, early 1-1 in SMB2j, late 1-1 in SMB2, and early 1-2 in SMB3. It's going OK. It's not as hard as I thought. Expect a WIP soon.

I'm finding this fairly easy to do, one problem: The emulators desync away from each other. So when I watch the movies again, messed-up things happen. How can I fix this? If the only solution is hitting frame advance very slowly, I think I'll just give up on this run...

hold the frame advance button longer, it wont desync as much. (i mean hold it longer per frame, but dont make it do multiple frames)

At least show us a wip before you give up.
