By altering your path to get red coins last I'd think this would take more time.
My thoughts exactly.

So basically, the deal is that after the final coin of the level is gotten, whichever star is fastest will be gotten to save the score, whether it's a normal level star, the red coin star, or the 100 coin star followed by a course quit. Also, the thought occurs that in order to get the maximum number of coins in JRB, the first star will have to be completed to raise the ship, as some of the red coins are on the ship. There may be other levels like this, though I can't think of any at the moment.

Yep, we already did that. :P That's the only level I can think of that really needs a prerequisite star.

BBH requires you to get the first star for the set of boo buddies to appear in the basement. Good luck in BoB without opening the cannon. LLL will be entertaining shellless. THI has one coin which may not be possible to collect even tool-assisted. Will you be grabbing it?

What I was saying was to completely disregard any thought of the red coin star and instead focus 100% on the coin path followed then by grabbing a star. What he is saying, I think, is to test multiple paths that could end nearer to certain stars be it the red coin star or not. Mostly the same thing, however mine is probably the lazy way out and his much more thought out.

We haven't found out how to pick it up yet, so probably not. I'll try some new methods, but I doubt anything will work.

Ahh, okay. So...after the last coin is picked up, get the closest star to Mario, but don't manipulate the coin route so the last coin is near the red coin star?

Not only are the goals for this run going to be really messy, so will timeing the run. Taking the nearest star to mario after using the fastest coin rout will be slower than making a rout that ends near a star. So this will beg the question, is the goal to collect every coin in the game, (exiting on a star in each level) in the fewest frames, or will it be to time only the time spent "getting coins" in each level, and ignore the time it takes to get setup stars, or collect a star after all the coins have been collected? Either way, it just seems messy.

I hate questions like that because I never have good answers..of the two ideas you suggested, what do you think would generally be more entertaining?

Go for fewest frames overall. Compairing runs will be simpler, and it should give the run a more cohesive feel. Only downside is that the rout should be planned with the stars in mind, since one will be needed as an exit point. This means that the rout will not be the fastest for simply getting every coin, but would be the fastest for completing the goal of getting every coin in the game.

I will say again, in Bomb bomb Battlefield that Koopa Troopa with a blue coin in its corpse, does not appear in stars 1 and 2. I.e until you have beaten Koppa the Quick.

anyway, i'd do a proof of concept testrun to decide which stars WORK, before doing the final thing.

Update: We've done WF. Considering we're not doing any other coin glitches, we didn't do the fake box glitch...it didn't look that great anyway. Next course is CCM. I did a little test run yesterday, and found that we'll need: The Ship star in JRB The first two stars in BoB The first star in BBH The first four stars in LLL Which is pretty much the exact same thing as JSmith and Paused said.

Sounds awesome. Will you be posting any WIPs or will it all be kept a secret? :) Nevertheless I'm looking forward to the finished result.

Heheh..probably more of the latter. We might do something like FODA did and put a single course on YouTube or something, if Rikku's cool with it.

The wing cap will save a lot of time in LLL; It lets you skip the shell completely. There are a few tricky ones right over the surface of the lava at the drawbridge, but you can just jump in after those and bounce back out. I think you can get all 5 at once even without the wing cap. However, I believe the wing cap is necessary for 4 coins on an island in the far corner. You do not have enough health to make the full trip. Bonus points for grabbing the coins under the drawbridge while it's down (plus I think it's faster). Double bonus points for doing this usint the wing cap. Also, on the second bully in the volcano, try to kick it into the lavafall so you don't have to go all the way downstairs to pick up its coin.

humm i don't think the cap would save time in LLL compared to the shell...

The question is, what would be faster? Getting 4 stars in LLL, then using the shell? or Using the Wing Cap upon first entering the level?

Isn't it possible to get all the coins without using the Wing Cap at all?

I've been wondering...why 4 stars? What happens after 4 stars?

The yellow block with the Green Shell appears only when you select the 5th or 6th star.

if you only have to select the star, you only have to do that one star the first time (when you selected the only star available), then after that all stars up until that star will be available so you can select it, if I remember right. so you don't have to do 4, but just 1 star before you can select it and use the shell if what you said is right.

Well, I started a new file and got to LLL in order to check that, and it seems that I was wrong. You need to grab the first four stars AND select the fifth or the sixth in order to make the yellow block appear. :P BTW, I also checked that, after all, it is possible to get all the coins without the Wing Cap, and it even looks faster.
