Hmm... for the people who didn't get the idea, here's an example. That's the Bat boss at the boss rush. it has 2250 HP, and I caused a 1916 (iirc) damage with a single attack. Apparently, the glitch causes the whip to become active WHILE the cross is inactive. By the way, it works with the axe too, but I don't see any reason to do it.

Wow the Juste run just got way crazier. That will totally change the route for a Juste run. I hope JXQ or someone else improves this with that glitch! *Crosses fingers*

Hmm. On one hand, it's rather cool. On the other, I wouldn't want it if both HoD movies were all glitched out. HoD best ending run can be done a couple minutes faster already with the current knowledge, and crunching it into 15 minutes would just leave most of the coolest stuff out. I would vote for a third category: worst ending, using wall sinking glitch (complementary to best ending, without wall sinking, and Maxim, with wall sinking).

Wow that's very impressive, longnamewithnovowels. (imagines response: Thanks, SNWNV!) Here is what I would suggest for run categories: 1) As fast as possible, whatever ending is fastest (obsoleting my run) 2) Best ending, without use of wall-zipping or the door warp glitch currently used in the published run. 3) Maxim, glitched. If I redid this run, I'd pick #1, and I'd also ask Cardboard if he would team with me. But, I have no current plans to do so, and as always, someone else is welcome to improve the currently published run. I think z has the interest and ability to give us a new run :)

Now, I arrive at the center of castle. However, I find that Maxim is difficult to defeat. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5763/hoduspeedrun.vbm

I think on IRC I requested some run that has greater usage of Maxim... while he has the capability to go straight to Dracula and finish it right there in 27 seconds, I think that a more full run of Maxim would be cool, due to his superior capabilities. Best ending with Maxim? Warping throughout the castle and beating every boss in reverse order?

I had an idea for a funny gimmick run like the reverse boss order Super Metroid run. In this game, you meet Death four times: 1. Introduction in marble corridor A 2. Meeting in clock tower A (activation of the circular warps) 3. Lydie's kidnapping in castle top floor A 4. Fight in Luminous Cavern A With door glitching and quicksave + soft resetting, I could do these 4 in reverse order.

A high score run would be cool, methinks.

How did this run get the best ending without getting dracula's parts?

Presumably because the game assumes you've collected them all since it's normally the only way to reach the final boss room in castle B.

To get the best ending you just need to have both JB's Bracelet and MK's Bracelet on when you beat Maxim in Castle B.
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

Stupid castlevania and their stupid multiple endings. Anyway, zggzdydp, nice job, and clever use of shortcuts! Are you thinking of redoing it without starting from SRAM and polishing it up a bit to submit it to the site?

Let me try it. "without starting from SRAM", does it mean starting from power on?

Yes, it does mean starting from power-on. Submissions on this site usually aren't accepted if they start from SRAM. Good luck with the next run!

zggzdydp, I have a few suggestions on improving the precision. (loved the run by the way.) I noticed you used a lot of turbo for dashing and sliding. If you want optimum, it's *technically* not bad that you did this, since optimal dashing is every 10 frames, and optimal sliding is every 22, so by going with even number of frames you don't really lose out, but you do each time you miss the first possible frame to do a dash or slide. use lots of frame advance, and calculate the first frame for each dash, each slide, etc. etc. it'll take way longer, but be far smoother. One mistake JXQ noticed in his run that I think you forgot to implement in your run is to do a mid air dive (after getting the feather) on every downhill slope. JXQ used luck manipulation to get all his hits as criticals. you swung always at the first possible moment, and got way less criticals... I'm not 100% sure on the difference between normal and hard, but he seemed to have faster boss fights because of this. good luck!

Thank you comicalflop, I noticed them too. This is the first time I make movie, I don't have enough experience. I will do my best to do it.

hah, zggzdydp... great surprise. You were saying you liked Circle of the Moon and now all of a sudden you come with this... excellent work dude!

In hard mode you do about 25% less damage. That is the only difference. It should be called "longer mode".

I suggested the idea for a longer Warpless Maxim run, and some people have been receptive to it... I was curious if we could lay out what can and can not happen in such a run that consciously prevents going into the walls so as to avoid such a quick ending. The goal for the run is to play through the castles without warping/wall sinking (because it's pointless to use it; why not just do it at the start like the short run? so no going into the walls to warp to far away places), defeat the bosses that drop those red orbs so that Maxim can open the door to Dracula and fight him as the game intended. There's 4 possible glitches that could go in a HoD movie: -door warping -whip launch glitch -shuriken glitch -wall sinking In my Opinion: Door warping* should be allowed, as that does not go into the walls and is a handy time saver. Resetting the game should be allowed, if nescessary to avoid backtracking. Whip launch glitching* should be allowed, it's freakin' fast and you can consciously not go into the walls with it. Shuriken glitch should be allowed, for incredibly fast boss fights. (*As you'll read below, some problems I've encountered with allowing these.) My initial proposal was to have a "does not enter the walls to warp" restriction, by solely excluding wall sinking, because the whip launch glitch can still be used without getting into the walls. However, I almost immediately ran into a problem with that definition, wherein to reach the closest boss, Living Armor, I needed to door warp into a wall, the same way the Juste runs attain the Lizard's Tail. I also came across a dilemma where the whip launch glitch is a tool that can be used to accomplish wall sinking, but should be allowed for much faster whip launches off of candles, platforms and enemies. However, the high speeds it achieves can create problems with objects that are offscreen. Right at the start I did a whip launch glitch and went through the door to the room where the Lizard's Tail would be. I do not want to restrict such a fast form of movement, but on the other hand I may be inadvertently breaking the rules I had just suggested. Here (now with first boss fight test) is what I have done so far, stopping just as I enter the Living Armor room. Fast as intended, but potentially breaking the rules, especially by passing through the door and using the door warp to lodge myself in the wall. By the way, my door warp sequence is different from the published run, because of what my whip launch glitch did to make me go through the door. Weird things happened, and I was forced to go into the room, drop down, and have to jump up again, it was slower to wait for the screen to catch up to me and enter the door the correct way. It's not so bad since I technically didn't do any wall sinking that would allow warping to distant parts of the castle, but I just wanted to be sure. I'm open to suggestions and feedback, especially what the rules definitions should be. I am also in badly need of a route to follow, but at least I have this Edit: WIP up to first save point room. I don't know if I am going to use the save rooms or not, based on whether save/resetting after beating bosses will help in backtracking. Again, I don't have a complete route yet, which is why I'm uncertain.

Well it's certainly nice and may be worth watching, but Maxim is so overpowered. :\ Every boss fight will look basically the same. Check out Truncated's Alien Soldier WIP (for Genesis), it suffers from the same illness basically.

Maxim is indeed overpowered (that's actually why I like him, when it comes to character movement and style), but the boss fights won't all look the same, just some of them. The bosses come in different shapes, sizes, behaviors, and amounts of HP, and these factors all will inevitably make the fights look different from the "throw shuriken, then do mirage" technique that is shown against the Living Armor, and first seen against Dracula Wraith in the short run. Both the shuriken glitch, and the mirage attack are most effective when the boss is very large; there is more room for the shuriken to move inside the boss itself, and thus lead to more frames where the glitch is active and damaging every frame; and a wider size will make it more likely that more "mirage Maxim's" will hit (and therefore also increase the chance that some will be criticals? more hits = more potential criticals). Some bosses are almost Maxim's size and both attacks would not be as effective, and some bosses have different phases that may make either attack ineffective as well (Giant Bat for example.) Also, I calculated Maxim's shuriken attack on Living Armor to deal 1323 damage; his HP was 3375. shurkien then mirage worked perfectly; comparatively, some bosses later on are smaller in size and have greater HP, and that technique will not work as well, or at all. Also, I believe in variance, so I wouldn't make all 18 boss fights look the same anyways. I'm also assuming that most people enjoy insanely fast boss fights; Maxim puts them to shame, then flies through the castle like a speed demon to the next one, which is what I wanted the run to exemplify.

Well, I'll ask you one question then: it might be that this run won't get accepted. Are you still willing to do it? If so, go ahead.

What I'd rather see is a Boss Rush run on Hard using Simon Belmont. THAT would be interesting.

I believe in three things: that there is demand to see such a run, that warpless/no warps categories can be made for HoD without too many people getting upset, and that I have good communication skills to persuade on why a warpless Maxim run should be accepted if the need arises. And if not, I'll still have made a kickass run, and we're not really just aiming to make publications to increase how many movies we have under our names right? So yes, I'm still willing to do it. The only main immediate problem is that Senor Flop still has no route. (working on it! would reeeally like some assistance!) Simon Belmont boss rush would be cool; SIMON BELMONT FOREVER! I was planning on doing a Maxim boss rush (my unofficial name for the Maxim warpless run is boss rush, hehe) so that I can make boss strategies on the toughies I'll be facing, but you know how it is when sharing savestates with the same game :-/ maybe when I'm done I'll do 3 boss rushes for each character, then maybe later think about improving a Juste run, or maybe opposite that order.
