I found this Youtube video of a broken Faxanadu password just now. I find this very interesting. It would likely require some disassembly to know for certain, but are there any other games that allow broken passwords like this that anyone knows of?

Never played the game, but he was a scrambled superhero. Not really a superhero power I'd go for, but hey! :p Main reason for posting is yay for youtube :p

Well, everyone knows about Metroid 1 having some messed-up passwords. :p I seem to remember ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER FUCKER having a similar effect to that Faxanadu video the first time I tried it...it scrambled all the graphics, and the screen wouldn't scroll, so I was stuck. For some reason I've never gotten it to do that again, and it just resets or crashes now...maybe it was a different password that caused the scrambling effect? <_<' Also, the equally infamous 999999 999999 KKKKKK KKKKKK and BOMBS_ MISSLE SCREW_ ATACK_, both of which remove Mother Brain for some odd reason. o.O Bomberman 1 has some odd passwords that send you outside the normal range of levels (1 to 50). BABABABABABABABABABA will start you on level 0, and BACDIHCLOAFHABDNMOLG will take you to level 59...

Holy crap. I can't believe a game would actually accept that.

Sounds like it messed up the plot flags... But then, it would be weird to have a flag at a point in the game where there isn't any more plot. Now I'm tempted to dig around in River City Ransom (especially since it hasn't already been covered here) to see if the same lack of error checking exists in that game... anybody know? Edit: AHA! :)

Some tinkering revealed that the RCR password generator generates invalid passwords if you let it. It doesn't figure out that they won't actually work in the game, though.

I found it was easy to find weird passwords for Clash at Demonhead and Metroid 1 (NES). For Metroid, I often entered the password screen, chosen some letters and numbers, got some blank spaces sometimes, and when I was lucky, it worked! I often got games that were impossible to finish, because I found myself in places where I didn't have the items to leave and go everywhere like it should be... I also found a new ice beam. It is just as big as the wave beam, but it shoots like the normal ice beam with the blue form of the wave beams. It is not stronger, but it is more beautiful as a beam!!! For Clash at Demonhead, I did the same thing, but it was more difficult, because we only have two chances to input a password each time we enter the password screen... Some passwords will allow us to fight Bopper at the very end, but past him, the professor Plum won't be there or sometimes, the barrier holding him won't even open... Sometimes, the Alien past the last boss won't be there neither. Lots of things can be weird! I was even able to get 2 more energy points (HP) over the normal maximum in a game! Here is some of the passwords I found for those two games: Clash at Demonhead: In this one, try the route 99. It is funny! :P U5MND 3WTWF GRPJH 56PQR QRTPQ VU1VT Metroid: Here is the shortest password I found for this game! It is impossible go farther with this one. Just see for yourself! It is really easy to understand what is the matter!!! ;) QHIJ7M L98KJ Metroid: In this impossible password, I have the big Ice Beam I told you about. However, we cannot finish this game. Gauntlet's password system has been broken (search it on gamefaqs and the NES forum here), but I don't think it can break the game's logic, despite having a few more "items", or "character level up" before it would be normally possible, but I can't see how to exploit that into breaking the game.

My XClash at Demonhead password is valid. May be it doesn't work on all versions. However, it works well on my console and my computer. I really don't understand why it wouldn't work for you... and I am serious!
