Your progress is being monitored, you still have a long way to go, but you have atleast started on something that seems to be going somewhere :)

I watched your latest...gorgeous stuff, particularly with your flying in Donut Plains 1 and how you flew through the bar at the end. Please, keep this up. Your style is awesome and at this rate this movie will be one of my favorites when it's done. Hang in there, man! =) -Josh
but then you take my 75 perchance chance of winning, if we was to go one-on-one, and then add 66 and two-thirds ch...percents...i got a 141 and two-thirds chance of winning at sacrifice

Ah, I know the feeling... hence why I continue to not update the Mega Man 7 thread. But I can finally be the person on the outside saying "please do keep us informed!" Really, your run is coming along incredibly well! I hope you'll maintain the energy to keep it up till the end! :)

Keep going, you are doing well. I haven't watched your movie yet, but what you've written and the replies to them sounds good. :)

oh. Not at all. Please continue posting upgrades. I really enjoy watching your incremental runs. Your style is very entertaining. I have not yet seen the current movie, but I surely will this evening. Philip

thanx to everybody for the positive comments :) did one more level today, the movie is updated Donut Plains 2 (normal goal): I spent the autoscrolling passage with playing around with some beetle shells (thanx to Zer0 for the inspiration ;)), also produced one little glitch where a shell got stuck in one of the yellow moving walls. I improved my old time in this level by 19 frames, entering the green tube a bit earlier and flying a bit faster in the second passage. Also saved a few frames by faster worldmap movement after the green switch palace, so overall I'm now 205 frames faster than my old movie at this position :)

Is it possible to get to the green pipe even sooner by bouncing off the shell after throwing it against the wall?

great idea, never thought of jumping off the shell into the tube, I only tried jumping from those stupid green bats all the time I just tried it out a few times and... yes, I was 31 frames faster in the first successful try. so, guess I gotta redo the last 3 levels tonight... :S

ok I redid Donut Plains 2 a & b (and Green Switch Palace as well of course :P), newest video is available here Donut Plains 2a: The "bounce-off-shell" trick saved 34 frames, the rest of the level was done identical Green Switch Palace: I somehow gained 6 frames, because the fade-out effect somehow started a bit earlier (although I hit the switch in the exact same time...) Donut Plains 2b: I tried to make the beetle shell playing a bit more entertaining, for example there's one cool combo where I place the shell on the !-block, then jump against it and that makes the shell smash against a bat. I saved 1 more frame in the flying area, so I'm 35 frames faster than my old version here. Overall doing those 3 levels again gained 75 frames :) Now I'll move on to the ghost house! :)

I somehow gained 6 frames
Yeah, it's really weird. I noticed all throughout my Mega Man 7 run that frames sometimes randomly came and went...although usually it was 1 frame. Hmmm... Anyways, hurray for 75 frames!

Anyways, hurray for 75 frames!
was that meant ironic? I'm trying to do a perfect run, so 75 frames (which equals more than a second) in 3 levels is quite much imo Anyway, video is updated (just use the link above), both secret and normal Donut Ghost House were added Donut Ghost House secret route: I improved my old time by 21 frames (enter the house faster / turn and lift off earlier at the start / continue flying instead of running on top of the roof) Donut Ghost House normal goal: 37 frames faster than my old time by flying up to the 2nd door on the left side instead of the right side (thanx Michael Fried for the hint :)). Also was 6 frames faster on the world map Overall I'm now 345 frames faster than my old video at this point :)

Is it possible to bounce from the last enemy in Yoshi's Island 1 to reach the end of the level quicker? Or do they give any acceleration at all? I liked your acting in Donut Plains 2, but it looked like you reached the pipe a little late, both times.

bouncing off the football chucks actually slows you down like 1 or 2 frames, I tested that out because I wanted to get all the coins at the end of Yoshi's Island 2. Bouncing off other enemies like koopas doesn't have any effect at all on speed (as long as Mario is running) and I doubt that it's possible to reach the pipe in Donut Plains 2 faster; I did loads of tests (release shell in frame xxx, jump on it in frame xxx, etc.) and these were the fastest results that I got (you need to really bump against the pipe to enter it, it's not enough to just float under it) ---edit--- Donut Plains 3 have been added, new video can be downloaded here I improved my old time by 73 frames, collected a few more coins and jumped on 1 more koopa (not enough to get 1UP unfortunately). I dropped the kamikaze part (flying below the screen) because that cost too much time :(. If you wonder why I don't hit the first 2 of the 3 flying koopas in a row: I can only hit one of those 3 anyway, because I bump off too high, so I chose to miss the first 2 (I kinda fly through them) and collect some more coins before hitting the third one. I also tried to collect the last dragon coin, but it's just impossible to continue flying through all those platforms, I always land on one of them Overall I'm now 428 frames faster than my old movie at this point (also gained a few frames by moving faster on the world map)

Donut Plains 4: I did a really nice run, bouncing from one enemy to the next, in the end collecting 3x 1UP. And then I found out that I was like 90 frames slower then my old version... WTF?? I tried out several things, and in the end the only possible solution was the kamikaze flight. Several tries later I found out that I need to press the forward button for exactly 42 frames in order to get the fastest possible time. 41 frames -> too slow, 43 frames -> too slow... really strange. Anyway, now I finished the level 3 frames faster, but it's a lot less entertaining :( (especially the first part...). But well, speed comes first. Overall I'm 436 frames faster than my old version now (also faster world map movement). Hopefully I can finish the castle#2 now, 2 weeks after I started this thread :) oh and btw of course I also tried this kamikaze flight with 42 frames in Donut Plains 3, but there it only caused slowdown... no idea how this works :S

A good idea might be to do some testing on that phenomenon first before you continue. Otherwise you could end up redoing a lot of levels later on. Just a tip. Happened to me.

Truncated, I don't know whether I should love you or hate you for posting that... Hate you, because I spent several hours cursing at the seemingly irrationality of this "phenomenon" Or love you, because I finally figured it out (more or less), and this will probably help me bigtime in the rest of my movie First of all I had a look at the kamikaze flight (keep the forward-button (->) pressed while flying). I found out, that the "good" version comes in 5-frames-cycles. Like this: Press (->) in frame 190 Release (->) in frame 230 ==> big slowdown Release (->) in frame 231 ==> enormous slowdown Release (->) in frame 232 ==> almost no slowdown * Release (->) in frame 233 ==> little slowdown Release (->) in frame 234 ==> medium slowdown Release (->) in frame 235 ==> big slowdown Release (->) in frame 236 ==> enormous slowdown Release (->) in frame 237 ==> almost no slowdown * So obviously, the ones with * are those that I want. But why only "almost no" slowdown? That's the next thing I found out: The most important part of the flight is the lift-off. Or more exactly, the passage where it goes over from rising up into floating. There you got to release the (->) button in the exact right frame, or otherwise you'll suffer from an "invisible" slowdown. The only way to notice this is by looking at the frame counter, because Mario still flies the normal way, just not as fast. If you once have this slowdown, you can get rid of it by doing a kamikaze flight (as explained above). But, if you do it right, you don't need any more kamikaze flight, because you can't get any faster anymore and it will only cost you ~ 2 frames in the end So, knowing this, I went back to all the levels where I started with feather and used it for flying (Donut Plains 1 doesn't count, because there I didn't have a normal "lift-off"). And I was glad to find out that I somehow always did it right "accidentally", just doing several tries and picking the best. So the only level I had to redo was Donut Plains 4, and here I saved another 32 frames AND could do a much more entertaining flight, bumping on so many enemies (some of them above the screen) that I collect 2x 1UP in the end. Check it out, it looks really cool now :) Now... finally... FINALLY... I will do castle#2!!! (I was already half-way through it yesterday :S)

Glad to hear you only had to redo the most recent level. Saw your movie, it's looking tight indeed! -Josh

I just have to say that I admire your persistence and the care with which you're making your run. This will surely be one of the most refined runs on this site, and definitely one of my favorites. I sincerely hope you have the patience to do it all the way. So keep up the good work :)

What about the ghost house? Did you try redoing that level with your improved flying method?

Don't worry Michael, I did test results for ghost house (checkpoint = the exact frame when the floor disappears on the left screen) release (->) button at frame / reach checkpoint at frame ...70 / ...51 ...71 / ...47 ...72 / ...51 ...73 / ...44 ...74 / ...47 ...75 / ...51 ...76 / ...37 ...77 / ...41 ...78 / ...44 ...79 / ...47 ...80 / ...51 now guess when I reach the checkpoint in my video? - Yes, at ...37 :) (btw frame in frame ...78 the parachute opens, so any time later will always lead to slowdown)

You love me, of course. :) Everybody loves me. Just think if you had continued doing a few more levels and then accidentally found out that you could have done all of your flying 32 frames faster. Meh, that can kill your enthusiasm pretty easily. Good luck with the rest of the levels.
